Carmen McRae: Blue Moon (CD: Decca/ Verve- US Import) In 1954 McRae signed with Decca, a company that knew how to exploit her versatility, spotting her wonderfully flexible voice on pop singles and albums, on jazz-combo dates, and backed by swinging big bands. The dates here, under the batons of bebop great Tadd Dameron and onetime Basie arranger Jimmy Mundy, were the perfect showcase for the maturing McRae, who establishes her signature burnished sound on classics by Berlin, Gershwin, and Strayhorn.
