Jack Teagarden: Big T (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)
The trombone is an unwieldy instument - it's not the easiest thing to hold let alone play accurately. Jack Teagarden made it look as easy as falling off a log and in the process created a language for the jazz trombone out of Louis Armstrong's innovations that would be referenced by every other player who followed him. Besides these academic considerations though, Teagarden was a consummate entertainer, whose distinctive lazy Texan vocals were just as well loved as his instrumental prowess. This 4CD set traces his career through both of his stints with Armstrong and also includes sides cut with the likes of Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and Billie Holiday. Teagarden's mastery of his instrument shines through every track and his true star appeal is just as apparent today, over 50 years after the records were made. (Proper Records)

Jack Teagarden: Featuring Bobby Hackett, Bob Wilber & Bud Freeman (CD: Solar)Jack Teagarden: Featuring Bobby Hackett, Bob Wilber & Bud Freeman (CD: Solar)
First time on CD for the self titled 1962 Jack Teagarden LP, released on Verve which paired the leader with his old pals Bobby Hackett (cornet) and Bud Freeman (tenor sax) plus clarinettist Bob Wilber. Among the many highlights is Teagarden’s only existing version of the classic Mancini tune “Moon River”.

As a bonus there’s a previously unissued live set with excellent sound quality featuring Teagarden and Hackett at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival. (Discovery Records)

Bobby Hackett: With Strings - That Midnight Touch + A Time For Love (CD: Blue Moon)
The stereo sound of these recordings brings out the beauty of Bobby Hackett’s mellow cornet sound. Recorded in 1967, the two albums included here feature a subtle string orchestra with assistance from guitarists Tony Mottola and out Al Casamenti, pianists Dave McKenna and Stan Freeman with Bob Dougherty on bass and Don Lamond, drums. Jack Teagarden: Mis'ry And The Blues + Think Well Of Me (CD: Essential Jazz Classics)Jack Teagarden: Mis'ry And The Blues + Think Well Of Me (CD: Essential Jazz Classics)
In the years between leaving Louis Armstrong's All-Stars and his death (1952-1964), the great trombonist and singer Jack Teagarden led a Dixieland-oriented sextet. Presented here in their entireties are two of his last albums, Mis'ry and the Blues (Verve V6-8416) and Think Well of Me (Verve V6-8465). While the former LP features his regular group in a selection of standards, the latter (on which a string section is added) concentrates on compositions by Willard Robison. Although Teagarden went through a rough time in the early 1960s that would lead to his premature death in 1964 (at the age of 58), these recordings give ample proof that he was a true master until the end, both as a trombonist and as a singer.
