Jelly Roll Morton: Jelly Roll Blues (CD: Acrobat)
Alongside Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton was the most important exponent of New Orleans jazz. Unlike Armstrong , Morton's piano stylings and small group recordings enjoyed little commercial success until many of his tunes were adopted by the Big Bands of the late Thirties. This selection of piano rolls and small group recordings feature such Dixieland giants as Johnny Dodds, Barney Bigard and Sidney Bechet. Tracks include; "Black Bottom Stomp", "The Pearls", "Tank Town Bump", "Ballin' The Jack", "West End Blues". (Acrobat Music)

Jelly Roll Morton: Mr. Jelly Lord (CD: Poll Winners)
The complete original LP Mr. Jelly Lord (Riverside Records RLP 12-132). A brilliant New Orleans pianist, Ferdinand Joseph 'Jelly Roll' Morton (1890-1941) is also generally acknowledged as the first jazz composer. In 1938, while he was living in relative obscurity in Washington (playing at a small bar to earn his keep), folklorist Alan Lomax invited him to record what ended up being nine hours of piano performances and interviews for the Library of Congress Music Division s Archive of American Folk Song. The Riverside LP presented here compiles the musical highlights from that collection. To the tracks on that album, there are also six additional performances from the same sessions. (Harmonia Mundi)
