Miles Davis Quintet with John Coltrane: Live In Zurich (CD: Gambit)Miles Davis Quintet with John Coltrane: Live In Zurich (CD: Gambit)
The Miles Davis Quintet’s 1960 European tour, featuring John Coltrane, marked the end of the most dynamic front line partnership since Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. This edition features the Quintet’s complete April 8, 1960 performance at Kongresshaus, in Zurich, Switzerland. Miles and Trane really stretched out on these tunes, averaging about 14 minutes per song - superbly backed by Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb.

This release also contains 4 bonus tracks of Davis and Coltrane accompanied by another star trio : Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones - at New York’s Café Bohemia on May 17, 1958. This phenomenally rare performance is a bonus gem worthy of this edition. (Discovery Records)

Miles Davis Quintet: Live In Milan 1964 (CD: RLR Records)Miles Davis Quintet: Live In Milan 1964 (CD: RLR Records)
Now here’s a rare treat : a previously unissued Miles Davis concert - Milan 1964 - with the superb Wayne Shorter-Herbie Hancock-Ron Carter-Tony Williams line-up : probably the 2nd greatest Miles quintet ever assembled, and at this point, only recently fully formed - although Herbie, Ron & Tony had been working with Miles since the recording of ‘Seven Steps To Heaven’ in May 1963. But with Coltrane’s departure, Miles needed a new sax player and after separate stints with Hank Mobley, George Coleman & Sam Rivers, he chose Wayne Shorter.

This concert was part of a European Tour covering France, Germany, Denmark, Finland and finally Italy. The show featured a typical Miles program for the period : extended versions of 3 standards, 2 originals from the early years, and Victor Feldman’s ‘Joshua’, which they had recorded on ‘Seven Steps’. The electric era still seems distant, but the experimental feeling is already there. (Discovery Records)

Miles Davis Quintet: Winter In Europe (CD: Gambit)
Miles with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter & Tony Williams : this is probably the ‘second greatest’ Miles Davis Quintet - after the Coltrane-Kelly-Chambers-Cobb unit. These currently otherwise unavailable live sessions were recorded on a winter tour of Europe in 1967 : the first 5 tracks in Stockholm in October; and the next 7 tracks at Karlsruhe, Germany, in November.

This exact line-up had only been together for a year at this time (Ron Carter was the last one to be added) and these outstanding concerts marked the turning point between acoustic & electric Miles - with old favourites like “Around Midnight” and “Walkin’” sitting side by side with newer pieces like “Agitation” (from the “ESP” album) and “Footprints” & “Gingerbread Boy” from “Miles Smiles”, recorded the year before.
