Abbey Lincoln: Straight Ahead (CD: Candid)Abbey Lincoln: Straight Ahead (CD: Candid)
Abbey Lincolns distinctive vocal style, thought-provoking writing, and spirited personality has secured her a place among the jazz greats. Though she made her first recording for Riverside, and later in life for Verve, it was with the young and audacious Candid Records that she made her biggest musical statement, 1961s Straight Ahead. Straight Ahead is one of Abbey Lincolns greatest and most important recordings. A testament to her credibility and talents, the section on this album includes saxophone giant Colman Hawkins, the great Eric Dolphy on flute alto, trumpeter Booker Little, pianist Mal Waldron and the iconic drummer Max Roach. Abbey Lincoln: Golden Lady (CD: Inner City)
Abbey Lincoln's follow-up album to 'People in Me' retained her wise and somewhat defiant attitude, while expressing deep-seated feelings of womanhood, personal growth, and freedom. The band features saxophonist Archie Shepp, trumpeter Roy Burrowes, drummer Freddie Waits, bassist Jack Gregg, and the exceptional pianist Hilton Ruiz joining Shepp, Burrowes, and Lincoln. HJighlights include interpretations of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," a melancholy version of Stevie Wonder's "Golden Lady", and a nearly ten-minute take of Michel Legrand's "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life"? During this late-'70s/early-'80s period, Lincoln-Moseka asserted herself in ways that made her stand out from the crowded arena of female jazz vocalists, and -- as always -- she had something to say to society. Golden Lady should be considered as one of her best albums. (Discovery Records)

Abbey Lincoln: Sophisticated Abbey- Live At The Keystone Korner (CD: Highnote)Abbey Lincoln: Sophisticated Abbey- Live At The Keystone Korner (CD: Highnote)
Few singers have the emotional depth and versatility of Abbey Lincoln. With a voice capable of evoking the joys and pains of life, she has carved a niche as a singer, songwriter, and storyteller for over 40 years. As a singer, she avoided grandstanding and rarely, if ever, improvised; she did, however, wring a lyric for its emotional content, while bringing a searing, dramatic quality to the musical line. Early in her career her rich, sustained contralto register - sometimes pierced by sudden impassioned cries - echoed the style of her idol Billie Holiday; in turn it inspired a generation of younger artists such as Cassandra Wilson. The 1970s and 80s found Lincoln recording only sporadically and there is precious little documentation of her art from this period, making these live recordings from 1980 rare treasures indeed. Abbey Lincoln: Over The Years (Vinyl LP: Verve)Abbey Lincoln: Over The Years (Vinyl LP: Verve)
Recorded in 2000, mostly in New York, Over the Years is aimed at summing up Abbey Lincoln's long career and is likely her best album. Performing in quartet and accompanied, on some tracks, by the tenor saxophone of Joe Lovano or the trumpet of Jerry Gonzalez, the singer delivers, as usual, a tour de chant punctuated by her singular, nonchalant, haranguing and poetic voice. Borrowing from her own compositions or standards, such as Michel Legrand's "Windmills Of Your Mind", Abbey Lincoln continues her personal story of music and song. Abbey sings to her people, the people of blues, gospel and jazz, as if the work songs of yesteryear had never ceased to resonate within her. A subtlety of interpretation that culminates in the apotheosis of an a cappella "Tender As A Rose". This 140-gram vinyl is the first international vinyl reissue, pressed at GZ, and is presented in a wide-spine, single-sleeve jacket. (Universal Music)
