Jobs were scarce, and the lack of recognition and appreciation must have been heartbreaking for this tenor saxophone giant who felt things deeply. In 1964 Ben Webster headed for Europe, spending the last years of his life in Amsterdam and Copenhagen. The two sessions on this compilation both date from this era. The May 1969 session finds Ben breezing through an Ellington programme backed by the formidable rhythm section which he used to accompany him on numerous gigs in the Netherlands. Following this session, Ben left Amsterdam and moved to Copenhagen, where in October of the same year he was backed by two pianists, Kenny Drew and Francis Wieringa, plus bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen and drummer Donald McKyre in the informal session that graces the remainder of the collection. The music here gives a wholly satisfying picture of Ben at work in Europe, one of the most individual tenor stylists that ever was. (Snapper Music)
