Chet Baker: The Early Years (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)Chet Baker: The Early Years (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)
A primary exponent of the West Coast sound during the 1950s, Chet Baker matched this achievement with a secondary career as a singer, achieving considerable fame and success. However, it was as a jazz trumpeter that he first made his name, winning his first Downbeat poll in 1948 and then making the key recordings that launched the West Coast movement, with the Lighthouse Allstars and then Gerry Mulligan. This 4CD set includes tracks that illustrate the meteoric rise to fame that Baker experienced from 1952 through to 1954 - from when the Mulligan quartet was in full flight to his first vocal and orchestrated recordings. This is one of the first Properbox sets to be issued in new slimline packaging - half the thickness of the original sets but with all the same information and produced to the same exceptional quality. (Proper Records)

Chet Baker: Sings- It Could Happen To You (Vinyl LP: Riverside/ Craft Recordings)Chet Baker: Sings- It Could Happen To You (Vinyl LP: Riverside/ Craft Recordings)
Chet Baker's 1958 recording session debut for Riverside Records, which resulted in the album release (Chet Baker Sings) It Could Happen To You, offers a modern, hipper take on standards like "Old Devil Moon," "You're Driving Me Crazy," and "How Long Has This Been Going On?" Chet Baker Sings is unique in that the nimble artist sets aside his trumpet in several of the tracks, using only his vocals-and even scatting some of the improvised solos in a style that sounds very much like his lyrical trumpet playing. All Music calls the album "An essential title in Chet Baker's 30-plus-year canon." (Universal Music)

Chet Baker: In Europe - A Jazz Tour Of The Nato Countries (Vinyl LP: Wax Time)Chet Baker: In Europe - A Jazz Tour Of The Nato Countries (Vinyl LP: Wax Time)
In 1955, Chet Baker prepared the first European tour of his newly formed quartet. The tour began in Holland in September 1955 and continued with stops in Germany, Switzerland, and France. In Paris, pianist Dick Twardzik died from a heroin overdose in his hotel room on October 21, 1955. He was only 24-years old, and his early death was a tragedy for the jazz world. Chet was marked for life by this tragedy and from that point on his own addiction would haunt him forever.

This album compiles material from three studio sessions made during that European tour. Side A presents music recorded right after Twardzik's death, and Side B has tunes from the only two studio sessions recorded by Baker with Twardzik.

Limited edition 180g vinyl one-off high-definition audiophile pressing, with deluxe inner sleeve - the complete album + bonus track. (Proper Music)

Chet Baker: Chet Baker And Crew (CD: Pacific)
The "crew," including Phil Urso, tenor-sax, and pianist Bobby Timmons, are cover-featured in William Claxton's photo of open sailboat, with Baker blowing ethereal Gabriel's horn from rigging. Recommended earlier Chet Baker (1956), playing a sample of lightly-swinging West Coast jazz, with its usual emphasis on musicianship, ensemble organization and arrangement. For those who view Baker as a vocalist, repertoire here is almost all instrumental. (Andrew Clark, editor. Riffs & Choruses: A New Jazz Anthology. Continuum Publishing.)

Chet Baker & Dick Twardzik Quartet: Chet & Dick (CD: Jazz Images)
Chet Baker Quartet Vol.1 (Barclay 84009) was the first album recorded by Baker in Europe. Before that 1955 tour, he had never been to the Old Continent. Traveling with him was pianist Dick Twardzik, a highly talented player who had been praised by the likes of fellow pianist Russ Freeman (who encouraged him to record his only session as a leader) and Charlie Parker (who called Twardzik to back him during several Boston engagements). Twardzik would die in Paris at the age of 24 due to a heroin overdose a few days after recording the two sessions included on the present album. Further sessions recorded by Baker in Paris for Barclay and originally included on Chet Baker and His Quintet (Barclay BLP-84042) and on the Blue Star EP-74020 have been added here as a bonus. Chet Baker: In New York (CD: Riverside- US Import)
The undeniably erratic early career of Chet Baker involved roller-coaster extremes and musical paradoxes. In the Fifties, his sound and approach were often compared to Miles Davis, although his greatest successes came in a West Coast setting, began in Gerry Mulligan's cool, piano-less quartet, and often emphasized ballads and soft-toned vocals. But this album shows Baker in a unique direct assault in Davis territory: recorded in New York; including a couple of tunes associated with Miles; and above all with a driving East Coast supporting cast made up of tough-tenor Johnny Griffin, bebop veteran Al Haig, and frequent Davis colleagues Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. Chet Baker: In New York (Vinyl LP: Riverside/ Craft Recordings)
Chet Baker's West Coast cool comes to the Big Apple on Chet Baker in New York. The project would be Baker's first -- in a four album deal -- with the Big Apple-based Riverside Records. The bicoastal artist incorporates his decidedly undernourished sound and laid-back phrasing into the styling of Al Haig (piano), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). The results are uniformly brilliant as Baker's cool-toned solos fly and bop with authority around the equally impressive supporting soloists. Conversely, the same cohesive unity continues on the introspective numbers that are more akin to Baker's California cool. Undoubtedly one of the charms of this collection is the distinct choice of material. Running the gamut from the relaxed and soothing "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" and equally serene "Blue Thoughts" at one end of the spectrum to the percolating and driving intensity of "Hotel 49" on the other. Chet Baker: Chet (Vinyl LP: Riverside/ Craft Recordings)Chet Baker: Chet (Vinyl LP: Riverside/ Craft Recordings)
Few musicians have embodied the romantic, and ultimately tragic, jazz figure as totally as Chesney "Chet" Baker (1929-88). Unschooled yet eloquent in his music, the Baker mystique has only reinforced one of the most haunting trumpet styles and ingenuous approaches to jazz singing. Chet is Chet Baker's classic 1959 Riverside album featuring jazz legends Bill Evans, Kenny Burrell, Herbie Mann and Pepper Adams. Cut from the original analogue master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. (Universal Music)

Chet Baker: Plays The Best Of Lerner & Loewe (CD: Riverside- US Import)
Prompted by the vast success of Shelly Manne's jazz version of the My Fair Lady score, many a late-Fifties jazz performer took a crack at Broadway show tunes. This album looked to three musicals by the writers of My Fair Lady, with varying results. But the lyrical Chet Baker trumpet style fits most of the material quite well, and there is an unusually able group of players surrounding him–in particular, Bill Evans, Zoot Sims, and Pepper Adams. At its best, this set offers some of the most impressive work of Baker's somewhat erratic Riverside period. (Fantasy, Inc.)

Chet Baker: Plays The Best Of Lerner And Loewe (Vinyl LP: Riverside/ Craft Recordings)Chet Baker: Plays The Best Of Lerner And Loewe (Vinyl LP: Riverside/ Craft Recordings)
This is one of the last Chet Baker albums recorded in the States prior to the artists relocating to Europe in the early '60s. Likewise, the eight-tune collection was the final effort issued during his brief association with the Riverside Records imprint. The project was undoubtedly spurred on by the overwhelming success of the Shelly Manne-led combo that interpreted titles taken from the score to My Fair Lady (1956). In addition to becoming an instant classic, Manne's LP was also among of the best-selling jazz platters of all time. While Baker and crew may have gained their inspiration from Manne, these readings are comparatively understated. That said, the timelessness of the melodies, coupled with the assembled backing aggregate, make 'Chet Baker Plays the best of Lerner and Loewe' a memorable concept album. (Universal Music)
