Dizzy Gillespie: The Dizzy Gillespie Collection 1937-46 (CD: Acrobat)Dizzy Gillespie: The Dizzy Gillespie Collection 1937-46 (CD: Acrobat)
This is part of a mini-series on our competitively priced budget label Fabulous under the banner of Jazz Legends, presenting some of great and influential names of jazz, with recordings drawn from the classic era of the genre’s development between 1920 and 1950. Dizzy Gillespie was one of the major figures in jazz, recognised as one of the great innovative trumpeters, and a pioneer of bebop. He was a highly versatile musician, equally at home on piano, as well as an arranger and composer, writing a number of modern jazz standards. His larger-then-life stage presence matched his startling playing, with his scat vocals, a humorous demeanour and trademark beret and puffed-out cheeks creating a unique personal. Originally a disciple of Roy Eldridge, he developed a more complex, ambitious and dramatic approach to the trumpet, and with contemporaries like Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and Kenny Clarke he experimented with harmonic structures and chord progressions, and a more challenging approach to improvisation, to develop what became bebop. This collection is a snapshot of the first decade of his recording career, starting in the swing era and cherry-picking recordings which trace his progress to the early years of bebop in the mid-40s. As well as making for very entertaining listening it gives an enlightening insight into his early years in the top flight of jazz. (Acrobat Music)

Dizzy Gillspie: Four Classic Albums (CD: AVID, 2 CDs)Dizzy Gillspie: Four Classic Albums (CD: AVID, 2 CDs)
AVID Jazz here presents four classic Dizzy Gillespie albums, including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.

‘Dizzy Gillespie At Newport’, ‘Dizzy And Strings’, ‘World Statesman’ and ‘Gene Norman Presents Dizzy Gillespie And His Orchestra’. Recorded at the Newport Festival in 1957 and arranged by Quincy Jones, our first classic album finds Dizzy in the company of his big band including such greats as Pee Wee Moore, Wynton Kelly, Benny Golson, Lee Morgan and Billy Mitchell. Our second album finds Dizzy again with the big band but this time accompanied by a string section arranged by old associate Johnny Richards. For the second side (isn’t it great to talk about album sides again!) Dizzy is joined by Buster Harding as writer and arranger and soloists Lucky Thompson and JJ Johnson. Our aptly titled third classic album ‘Dizzy Gillespie World Statesman’ (which is what Dizzy would certainly go on to be!) contains the music that would make warm friends for the USA in the Middle East when Dizzy and his Orchestra (which included Quincy Jones, Phil Woods and Walter Davis) made a State Department tour of Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Yugoslavia, Turkey and Greece. Finally and triumphantly, we have the 10" LP version of the classic ‘Gene Norman Presents Dizzy Gillespie And His Orchestra’ album featuring Dizzy and his big band quite literally blowing the audience away as they bought the New Jazz…Bop….. to the West Coast. Featuring a band who would help to point jazz in the new direction including James Moody, Ernie Henry and Cecil Payne. We must also mention the legendary percussionist Chano Pozo who died soon after this gig which was to be his last recording. Chano was one of the pioneers of what would become the Afro Cubano rhythmic sound.

All four albums have been digitally re-mastered for probably the finest sound quality ever! (AVID Entertainment)

Dizzy Gillespie & Lalo Schifrin: Studio And ‘Live’ Collaborations 1960-62 (CD: Acrobat, 2 CDs)Dizzy Gillespie & Lalo Schifrin: Studio And ‘Live’ Collaborations 1960-62 (CD: Acrobat, 2 CDs)
Lalo Schifrin is an Argentinian pianist, composer, arranger and conductor who studied and played in France in the early 1950s before forming his own jazz orchestra in Argentina. He first met Dizzy Gillespie in 1956 and wrote the extended work Gillespiana for him. While in New York in 1960, he was offered the chance to join Gillespie’s Quintet as pianist, and over the next two years recorded a number of sessions with the jazz legend as well as performing with him at recorded concerts and club dates. Working alongside Gillespie certainly helped establish Schifrin’s reputation and formed the basis of his celebrated career composing film music in later years.

This 2CD set comprises studio and ‘live’ recordings from the albums Gillespiana, Jazz At The Philharmonic In Europe, An Electrifying Evening With The Dizzy Gillespie Quintet and Dizzy On The French Riviera, along with selected other ‘live” performances. It includes performances with a number of noted jazz musicians, including Clark Terry, J.J. Johnson, Stan Getz, Benny Carter, Cannonball Adderley, Leo Wright, Chuck Lampkin, Bob Cunningham, Candido Camero, Charlie Ventura, Mel Lewis and others. It’s a highly enlightening introduction to Schifrin’s early years on the US jazz scene, working with one of the pioneers and architects of bebop, on a range of repertoire that includes his own compositions, bebop classics and vibrant Latin jazz. Dizzy Gillespie & The United Nations Orchestra: Live At The Royal Festival Hall (CD & DVD: Wienerworld)Dizzy Gillespie & The United Nations Orchestra: Live At The Royal Festival Hall (CD & DVD: Wienerworld)
Jazz giant Dizzy Gillespie’s final recorded performance, filmed live at London’s Royal Festival Hall in 1989 with the United Nations Orchestra The United Nations Orchestra was created by Dizzy Gillespie to "showcase the varied influences that he considered valuable to the development of jazz". The 15 member ensemble on Live at Royal Festival Hall, London, was a true all-star orchestra, 10 of its members being bandleaders in their own right.

On this recording, the orchestra was on its last date of a European tour and it pulled out all the stops in a fiery big-band blowout. This is extroverted, aggressively confident big band music, meant to dazzle and delight. The driving rhythm section was given centre stage on Gillespie's "Tanga" whereby a lengthy section of solos by drummer Ignacio Berroa, master percussionist Airto Moreira and ace conga man Giovanni Hidalgo brought the house down once again. This CD/DVD digipack includes a booklet with detailed liner notes of the concert. (Wienerworld)
