Errol Garner: The Classic Trio Recordings 1949 (CD: Acrobat, 2 CDs) Erroll Garner was one of the most distinctive jazz piano stylists of the post-war era, his approach transcending the emerging sub-genres of modern jazz, although his music was rooted in swing and he was a noted performer of ballads, his performances characterised by elaborate and eccentric introductions, often described as being almost orchestral in style. He was especially effective working in a trio format, playing with a variety of combinations of bass players and drummers over the years, and this great-value 50-track 2-CD collection focuses on a series of six sessions he recorded during 1949 for the Savoy, Atlantic, Portrait and 3 Deuces labels, with two different trio line-ups. One comprised John Simmons on bass and Alvin Stoller on drums, and the other featured Leonard Gaskin on bass and Charlie Smith on drums. The repertoire primarily comprises familiar Great American Songbook classics much-loved by the jazz community, and it makes for a very satisfying body of work which captures the great virtuoso pianist in fine flowing form in a favoured metier in which at that time he clearly felt particularly comfortable. 	Erroll Garner: The Complete Concert By The Sea (CD: Columbia Legacy, 3 CDs) The rhythm/ volume dynamics of jazz piano playing are nowhere better demonstrated than by Erroll Garner. Concert By the Sea--- recorded for local radio in 1955---is Garner's deservedly best-known album. It displays the trademarks of an inimitable style: rock-steady, on-the-beat left hand, a stream of improvised right-hand lines, distinctive use of block chords and octaves---an amalgam of swing and bop techniques. Erroll Garner: Night Concert (CD: Mack Avenue) 'Nightconcert' (from the Dutch Nachtconcert) is a midnight jazz performance held at The Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, one of the premiere concert halls in the world. Recorded on November 7, 1964, it features Garner with his classic trio (bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin) performing to a packed house of 2,000 enraptured fans. The audience witnessed a blistering set featuring the group's unique take on classics from The Great American Songbook, as well as three originals by Garner: "Theme From A New Kind of Love (All Yours)," "No More Shadows" and a new composition titled "That Amsterdam Swing." 	Erroll Garner: Up In Errol's Room (CD: Mack Avenue) Remastered reissue of Erroll Garner's 1968 album 'Up in Erroll's Room', which is appearing here on CD for the first time. Over the course of two sessions in November 1967, Erroll Garner and his band recorded enough material for a handful of albums. What makes this collection truly unique is the addition of a brass section, expertly orchestrated over a selection of Garner's improvised arrangements. Recorded at the tail end of 1969 with a cast of new collaborators, this album is a prime showcase of Erroll Garner's two greatest strengths: his ability to completely reinvent well known songs, and his endlessly creative facility as a composer of original music.
