Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker: The Collection 1952-53 (CD: Acrobat, 2 CDs)Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker: The Collection 1952-53 (CD: Acrobat, 2 CDs)
Gerry Mulligan, who was primarily known as a baritone saxophonist, but was an expert exponent of other saxophones, clarinet and piano as well as being a highly-respected arranger, was one of the giants of post-war modern jazz and was one of the leading lights in the “cool jazz” movement focused on the USA’s West Coast. In 1952 he began a legendary collaboration with the young lyrical trumpeter Chet Baker, newly-arrived on the jazz scene after an Army career, with the primary era of their professional relationship ending in 1953 when Mulligan was jailed on narcotics charges.

This selection of tracks covers most of the recordings they made together during this time as part of Gerry Mulligan’s quartet (Baker also featured in Mulligan’s Tentette line-up and a quintet that included Lee Konitz), initially comprising informal ‘live’ recordings at The Haig jazz club in Los Angeles and at the house of recording engineer Phil Turetsky, and later at the Black Hawk club in San Francisco as well as more formal studio environments. After the first session, which involved pianist Jimmy Rowles and bassist Joe Mondragon, Mulligan developed an innovative piano-less line-up, using bass and drums to make up the quartets, with the pairings being Bobby Whitlock (bass) and and Chico Hamilton (drums), and Carson Smith (bass) and Larry Bunker (drums). It offers fascinating insights into the the way Mulligan and Baker developed an intuitive rapport, and an absorbing collection of landmark modern jazz performances. (Trapeze Music)

AVID Jazz here presents four classic baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan albums including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. A couple of “Quartets” and a couple of “Meetings” constitute this new release in AVID's on going series of re-issued classic jazz albums. “Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges”, “What Is There To Say?”, “Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster” and “Gerry Mulligan Quartet At Storyville” (currently only available as an expensive import!).

Here we find Mulligan in the company of Ben Webster on Tenor sax, recorded in 1959 followed a year later in 1960 by a meeting with Johnny Hodges in L.A. Both are casual and unrestrained affairs which have gone on to become jazz classics down the years. Our Quartet releases find Mulligan in the company of firstly at Storyville in 1956, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Bob Crow on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Then in 1958/59 Gerry and his rhythm section is joined by Art Farmer on trumpet for “What Is There To Say?”. Gerry Mulligan: Mullenium (CD: Columbia)
An excellent expanded reissue of a 1977 LP that included then new material by a 1957 studio-only big band, featuring Zoot Sims, Lee Konitz, Bob Brookmeyer and Charlie Rouse. Mulligan's light toned, swinging scores are usefully contrasted with early work for the bands of Gene Krupa (when he was nineteen) and Elliot Lawrence.' (The Rough Guide To Jazz)

Gerry Mulligan & Paul Desmond Quartet: Blues In Time (CD: Fresh Sound)Gerry Mulligan & Paul Desmond Quartet: Blues In Time (CD: Fresh Sound)
Reissue of the inspired, rare 1957 ‘Blues in Time’ album - plus two tracks left off the original Verve LP. The famous ‘pianoless’ line-up was: Gerry Mulligan (bars), Paul Desmond (as), Joe Benjamin (b), and Dave Bailey (d). Five tracks were recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood on August 2nd 1957, and the other four on August 27th at Fine Sound Studio, New York.

Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond were two of the most mischievous men in jazz, kindred spirits united in their wit, sense of humour and approach to music. There was a genuine fellow feeling between them, an affinity that extended beyond playing in time or fitting lines together.

However, as might be expected of any group that featured Gerry with a piano-less rhythm section, this unit took on the informal personality of a Mulligan quartet; there were a couple of planned unison lines, but arrangement was kept to a minimum. And, as befits such a spectacularly happy union, it produced spontaneous creative combustion of the first order, full of excitement and felicitous surprises. (Discovery Records)

Gerry Mulligan Sextet: Night Lights + Butterfly With Hiccups (CD: Jazz Up)Gerry Mulligan Sextet: Night Lights + Butterfly With Hiccups (CD: Jazz Up)
Although Gerry Mulligan collaborated a lot with either Art Farmer or Bob Brookmeyer, his sextet featuring them both on the frontline along with his baritone sax only lasted for a couple of years, and produced just two studio albums, both of which are presented in their entireties on this CD: Night Lights and Butterfly with Hiccups. A larger band arrangement of "Night Lights" and a live reading of "The Ant Hill" by the same sextet have been added here as a bonus. (Proper Music)

Gerry Mulligan: Meets Johnny Hodges (CD: Verve)Gerry Mulligan: Meets Johnny Hodges (CD: Verve)
Gerry Mulligan's studio adventures with his fellow saxophonists always produced memorable results, and his 1959 meeting with Johnny Hodges was one of the best. Together, the fleet-fingered baritonist and the sweet-toned altoist produced what Down Beat aptly called "casual, unostentatious music that belongs irrevocably to the past, present, and future of jazz." Gerry Mulligan Quartet: Dream A Little Dream (CD: Telarc Jazz)Gerry Mulligan Quartet: Dream A Little Dream (CD: Telarc Jazz)
In the world of jazz, there's no baritone saxophonist who matches the lyricism and flowing deep tones of Gerry Mulligan. Here he reaches into his bag of lush jazz standards, sprinkles them with "cool" dust, and makes a strong statement for straight-ahead jazz, a la West Coast style. No bari player today is creating jazz with such matchless lyricism and flowing, deep tones as Mulligan. With an acoustic quartet, the jazzmaster fashions Dream a Little Dream into a genuinely elegant session of fourteen contemplative standards and original compositions. (Telarc Jazz)
