Joe Henderson: Page One (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
While Joe Henderson seemed to arrive fully formed on his auspicious 1963 debut Page One, the album was really a showcase for the transcendent collaboration between the tenor saxophonist and trumpeter Kenny Dorham who would form a potent frontline team on numerous mid-60s Blue Note classics.

Page One opens with a pair of indelible Dorham compositions ("Blue Bossa" and "La Mesha"), with the balance of the six-song set penned by Henderson including his enduring theme "Recorda-Me." Dazzling performances by pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Pete La Roca further elevate this album making it one of the crown jewels of the Blue Note catalog.

This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. (Universal Music)

This is the third exceptional collaboration by Joe Henderson and Kenny Dorham (after "Page One" and "Una Mas") with the cutting edge rhythm section of Andrew Hill, Eddie Khan and Pete LaRoca. The tunes and the playing are superb throughout. Added to the original album is an alternate take of "Teeter Totter". The package includes previously unpublished photographs from the actual session. Joe Henderson: Inner Urge (CD: Blue Note RVG- US Import)
One of Henderson's finest records, featuring McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones from Trane's quartet, taped in 1964. Dark and intense, the magnificent title track recalls the tenorist's angst of adjusting to life in New York. Equally superb is the searching hispanic original, 'El Barrio', containing one of Henderson's most scorchingly explorative solos. 'Night and Day' too, driven by Jones' sparkling cymbals, has rarely been given such a vibrant treatment.

Joe Henderson: Inner Urge (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)Joe Henderson: Inner Urge (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
At 27 years old, tenor saxophonist and composer Joe Henderson was already in his full artistic stride by the time he made Inner Urge, his 4th Blue Note album which was recorded in November 1964. His first 3 albums—Page One, Our Thing, and In ‘N Out—were quintet dates where Henderson had his frequent collaborator trumpeter Kenny Dorham by his side, but on Inner Urge, Henderson opted instead for a quartet setting with his the lone horn out in front.

The extraordinary line-up included two members of the trailblazing John Coltrane Quartet—pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones—as well as Blue Note stalwart Bob Cranshaw on bass. Side 1 consists of 2 timeless Henderson compositions of differing temperaments that would go on to become standards: the intense title track “Inner Urge” and the jovial blues “Isotope,” which was an homage to Thelonious Monk. Side 2 opens with a 3rd Henderson original, the evocation “El Barrio” which opens with Henderson’s plaintive cry. A stunningly gorgeous ballad performance of Duke Pearson’s piece “You Know I Care” follows before the album concludes with a brisk, up-tempo dash through the Cole Porter standard “Night and Day.”

This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. (Blue Note Records)

Joe Henderson: Mode For Joe (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)Joe Henderson: Mode For Joe (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
Tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson capped off his run of five sublime 1960s Blue Note leader dates with his 1966 classic Mode for Joe, an album bursting with vigor and vitality that found Henderson expanding his palette with a septet of colorful figures including Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone, Cedar Walton on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums. The band delivers six powerful performances, playing with white-hot intensity on Henderson’s originals “A Shade of Jade,” Caribbean Fire Dance,” and “Granted,” as well as Morgan’s swinger “Free Wheelin’.” But it’s the remarkable title track by Walton that emerges as the standout of the set, a modal masterpiece where the leader summons one of his most transcendent and visceral solo statements.
