Lee Konitz: Subconscious-Lee (CD: Prestige- US Import)
Along with the recordings the Lennie Tristano Sextet made for Capitol, the four sessions that make up this CD form the definitive statement from the Tristano "salon," establishing the blind, Chicago-born pianist and his foremost disciples, Konitz and Marsh, as a force and influence on the jazz of the 1950s. Lee Konitz: Four Classic Albums (CD: AVID, 2 CDs)
AVID Jazz here presents four classic Lee Konitz albums including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. "An Image Lee Konitz With Strings", "You And Lee", "In Harvard Square" and "Konitz".

Jazz meets classical for our first selection "An Image"??perhaps?! Certainly William Russo?s arrangements to these songs add an extra dimension to the playing of Lee Konitz and a classical string quartet does rather enhance the classical flavour! The second selection "You And Lee" was, according to arranger Jimmy Guiffre, influenced by the old Jimmie Lunceford band where the six piece brass section would all rise to perform ballads bathed in a warm coloured light creating a wonderful mood with their closed muted horns. Artists appearing on this fine album include, on horns, Ernie Royal, Marky Markowitz and Phil Sunkle on trumpets; Bob Brookmeyer, Eddie Bert and Billy Byers on trombones; Lee on alto plus Bill Evans on piano, Sonny Dallas on bass, Roy Haynes on drums and Jim Hall on guitar. As mentioned in the original liner notes Lee is finally able to leave the Charlie Parker and Lester Young influences behind and become Lee Konitz! "In Harvard Square" is a driving four piece recording with Lee searching for freedom alongside Jeff Morton, Al Levitt, Peter Ind and Percy Heath- "Let real playing begin!". "Konitz" features the same band minus Heath and is the first time Lee had gone into the studio as front man and leader with his own handpicked sidemen. Recorded in Lee Tristano?s studio the Lee Konitz quartet "can take its place alongside the most important musical groups in jazz." All four albums have been digitally re-mastered . Lee Konitz: Four Classic Albums (CD: AVID, 2 CDs)

Lee Konitz: Motion (CD: Verve)Lee Konitz: Motion (CD: Verve)
Chicago-born Lee Konitz is a rarity amongst alto saxophonists of his generation in that he chose to follow a path that didn't derive inspiration from Charlie Parker. His unaffected tone and long lines virtually define the cool saxophone sound and are heard to impressive effect on this, another release in Verve's imaginative LPR series. If Rollins had made the tenor plus bass and drums format his own, then this was Konitz's parallel on alto, taped in New York, 1961. Spacious and unconventional, Konitz blows eloquently, and often unpredictably, in the hole created by the absence of a piano and Elvin Jones, an inspired choice of timekeeper, propels Motion forward like no other could have. A remarkable record.

Lee Konitz: Palo Alto (CD: Proper)
One of the most individual alto saxophone stylists to emerge (albeit indirectly) from the bebop era, Lee Konitz's style was derived from the playing of Lester Young as well as from the teachings of Lennie Tristano, with whom Konitz studied & played for many years. These 23 tracks cover the period 1949-1953 and include Konitz's recordings with Tristano, Warne Marsh and Miles Davis's Birth Of The Cool band. (Proper Records)

Lee Konitz: Tenorlee (CD: Candid)Lee Konitz: Tenorlee (CD: Candid)
As the title suggests, the recording Tenorlee finds Lee Konitz, the great American saxophonist, playing exclusively on tenor - It was a spontaneous decision, and a tribute to his dear friend, Lighthouse All-Star saxophonist Richie Kamuca, who had passed away just days before Konitz entered the studio for these sessions.

With a trio featuring Lighthouse All-Star alum Jimmy Rowles on piano and Michael Moore on bass, Kontiz called out old and familiar songs. The intention was to "let the tunes happen" as only finely tuned jazz musicians of certain experience can. Of note is "Lady Be Good" which finds Konitz and Rowles quoting Lester Young's solo from the 1936 recording with Count Basie.

From 1978, originally on the Choice label, this album has been remastered and is presented here as the artist intended, with its original title, track order and album artwork, for the first time since its original release. (Proper Music)

Lee Konitz & Martial Solal: Live At The Berlin Jazz Days 1980 (CD: MPS)
Reissue of a duo album of the highest calibre, which was originally released by MPS in 1982. This album, recorded at the Berlin Jazz Days 1980 was conceived in part as a "Lennie Tristano Memorial". Lee's studies and playing experience with the iconoclastic pianist left an indelible imprint on the saxophonist's concept and allowed him to develop a unique style that offered an alternate musical vision from that of his legendary contemporary, altoist Charlie Parker. Lee Konitz: Leewise (CD: Storyville)Lee Konitz: Leewise (CD: Storyville)
Continuing Storyville Records series of mid-price reissues presenting Jazzpar winners, a prestigious Danish jazz award. This album from legendary saxophonist Lee Konitz was originally released in 1993.

The set showcases the work of Konitz in a variety of settings all derived from the Jazzpar All Star Nonet directed by saxophonist Jens Søndergaard, and it begins with three tracks recorded by Radio Denmark during the actual final concert of the series in Copenhagen's Falkoner Scenen. Sadly. Although this reissue had been in preparation for some months, it has now turned into a memorial for Konitz, who died at the age of 92 from complications of the virus Covid-19 on April 15, 2020. Lee Konitz: Frescalalto (CD: Impulse)Lee Konitz: Frescalalto (CD: Impulse)
At age 89, Lee Konitz still wields an astonishing command over the alto saxophone. His patented, streamlined approach of jazz improvisation continues to burst with vigor, underscored with simmering wisdom. With more than a half of century experience as a leader under his belt, it’s surprising that Konitz is only now making his Impulse! Records debut with the delightful Frescalalto, which finds the 2009 NEA Jazz Master in the superb company of pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kenny Washington. The quartet’s collective expertise and accord enlivens Frescalalto as Konitz revisits tunes, mostly of which are timeless jazz standards. It’s to his credit that he can instil new personal meanings, and uncover new facets into these songs without sounding rote. (Universal Music)
