Lee Konitz: Subconscious-Lee (CD: Prestige- US Import)
Along with the recordings the Lennie Tristano Sextet made for Capitol, the four sessions that make up this CD form the definitive statement from the Tristano "salon," establishing the blind, Chicago-born pianist and his foremost disciples, Konitz and Marsh, as a force and influence on the jazz of the 1950s. Lee Konitz: Very Cool/ Tranquility (CD: Phoenix Jazz)Lee Konitz: Very Cool/ Tranquility (CD: Phoenix Jazz)
Lee Konitz confirms his cool school credentials with these two Verve LPs from 1957. Konitz was in the front line of contemporary jazz and the same year had been a member of the studio band recording Miles Davis’ seminal album Miles Ahead. On these recordings he expresses himself on alto sax in a way that few of his peers could match. The musicians on Very Cool are Don Ferrar (tp), Sal Mosca (p), Peter Ind (b), Shadow Wilson (d) and making up the quartet on Tranquility are Billy Bauer (g), Henry Grimes (b), Dave Bailey (d). Lee Konitz: Motion (CD: Verve LPR)
Chicago-born Lee Konitz is a rarity amongst alto saxophonists of his generation in that he chose to follow a path that didn't derive inspiration from Charlie Parker. His unaffected tone and long lines virtually define the cool saxophone sound and are heard to impressive effect on this, another release in Verve's imaginative LPR series. If Rollins had made the tenor plus bass and drums format his own, then this was Konitz's parallel on alto, taped in New York, 1961. Spacious and unconventional, Konitz blows eloquently, and often unpredictably, in the hole created by the absence of a piano and Elvin Jones, an inspired choice of timekeeper, propels Motion forward like no other could have. A remarkable record.

Lee Konitz: Palo Alto (CD: Proper)Lee Konitz: Palo Alto (CD: Proper)
One of the most individual alto saxophone stylists to emerge (albeit indirectly) from the bebop era, Lee Konitz's style was derived from the playing of Lester Young as well as from the teachings of Lennie Tristano, with whom Konitz studied & played for many years. These 23 tracks cover the period 1949-1953 and include Konitz's recordings with Tristano, Warne Marsh and Miles Davis's Birth Of The Cool band. (Proper Records)

Warne Marsh & Lee Konitz: Two Not One (Storyville, 4 CDs)Warne Marsh & Lee Konitz: Two Not One (Storyville, 4 CDs)
A great 4 CD Box Set, featuring amazing sessions recorded by two Lennie Tristano ‘pupils’ : Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz - recorded in 1975.

December 1975 was a busy month for both of them. It was Warne Marsh’s first visit to Europe. They played December 3,4 & 5 at the Montmartre club in Copenhagen and came back on the 27th and played yet another concert there. They were at Rosenberg studio December 28 and 29 for further recordings. All dates were recorded and the result can be heard on this 4 CD box. They were accompanied by the Danish musicians Ole Kock Hansen (p) Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (b) and Alex Riel (dr) and for the later sessions with Dave Cliff (g) Peter Ind (b) and Alan Lewitt (dr). (Discovery Records)
