For the first time on one CD, the two ‘California Suite’ versions as recorded by Mel Tormé with the orchestras conducted by Hal Mooney (Capitol, 1949) and Marty Paich (Bethlehem, 1957). An historic musical event, reissued in a very special digipak sleeve, including two different and comprehensive booklets full of memorabilia, photos and lyrics. Featured soloists include: Conrad Gozzo, Pete Candoli, Don Fagerquist (tp), Bob Enevoldsen (vtb), Si Zentner (tb), Ronnie Lang (as), Babe Russin, Ted Nash (ts), and Barney Kessel (g).

“California Suite” was originally a 30-minute lyrical and musical narrative composed and dedicated by Mel Tormé to the Golden State. Mel spent six months writing the piece, which was recorded in 1949 by Capitol Records, and released the following year with notable critical acclaim.

Encouraged by fans and musicians to revisit the concept, eight years later he recorded, this time for Bethlehem, a revitalized, extended version arranged and conducted by Marty Paich, with much more jazz influence than was evident in the original recording - Paich’s real genius exploded like a bombshell in the studios. Don't let the square looks fool you, this fellow was cool. Mel had been a child prodigy and went on to write his first hit at the age of sixteen when his song "Lament In Love" was recorded by Harry James. In the early 1940s he drummed for the Chico Marx band and later formed a vocal group, The Mel -Tones which would become an influence on later jazz vocal groups such as Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, The Four Freshmen and Manhattan Transfer. By 1947 he had begun his solo career as a jazz singer and in the mid 1950s began a highly successful collaboration with Marty Paich. We feature three of his classics on our fine set. Our final selection features Mel paying tribute to jazz greats Duke Ellington and Count Basie, how could he go wrong. Settle back and be astonished by the fabulous singing style of Mr Mel Torme.
