Nat King Cole: Hittin' The Ramp - The Early Years, 1936-1943 (CD: Resonance, 7 CDs)Nat King Cole: Hittin' The Ramp - The Early Years, 1936-1943 (CD: Resonance, 7 CDs)
Released in partnership with the Nat King Cole estate, Resonance Records’ ‘Hittin’ The Ramp: The Early Years (1936-1943)’ is the first large-scale collection of the pivotal early recordings (1936-1943) of Nat’s 29-year recording career. Most tracks are receiving their first official release in this meticulously restored set of original live-to-disk recordings. This definitive 7CD collection draws upon a wide range of sources, including many newly-discovered tracks unearthed for the first time from archives located all over the world.

Sessions include Nat at age 17, playing piano in his brother’s band in Chicago, 1936; the first King Cole Trio recordings from 1938, made for radio broadcdast only, for Standard Transcriptions; further radio transcription sessions for Standard, Davis & Schwegler, Keystone, plus his first (uncredited) session for MacGregor, with vocalist Anita Boyer; the Ammor Records Session (Spring 1940 - the first commercial-release sessions for the trio), the Decca Recordings (1940-41), the small-label sessions for Excelsior and Premier labels (1943), many previously-uncirculating Armed Forces Radio performances, and, with producer Norman Granz at the helm, early jazz sessions with Lester Young (Granz historic, first session as a producer) and Dexter Gordon, originally released on Philo and Mercury, respectively. Includes an extensive 60+ page booklet with rare photographs and essays. (Proper Music)

Nat King Cole: At The Sands + Welcome To The Club (CD: Essential Jazz Classics)Nat King Cole: At The Sands + Welcome To The Club (CD: Essential Jazz Classics)
Two complete original albums by Nat “King” Cole, from the late 1950s and early 1960s, which exemplify the swinging spirit of his live performances with orchestral accompaniment. ‘Nat King Cole at the Sands’ (originally on Capitol) was recorded live in Las Vegas in 1960.

Although ‘Welcome to the Club’ (also Capitol) was actually a studio recording, it captures the magic of Cole’s voice as it sounded on the road. On this second album, Nat is accompanied by the Count Basie orchestra (minus Basie, who couldn’t sit in due to contractual reasons and was replaced by pianist Gerald Wiggins). (Discovery Records)

Nat King Cole: Sings, George Shearing Plays (CD: Capitol)
Nat Cole's final jazz project ironically did not involve him returning to the piano which he'd played so brilliantly. It was a collaboration with another great pianist George Shearing and his quintet (with Emil Richards, Al Hendrickson, Al McKibbon and Shelly Manne). Shearing and Ralph Carmichael added a subtle string choir. Great standards by Ellington, Matt Dennis and others were mixed with a couple of contemporary songs and some early Cole trio hits like "I'm Lost" and "Lost April." Fifteen tunes were cut at those historic December 1961 sessions, twelve of which appeared on the original album. Now all fifteen have been remixed and remastered using 24-bit Super Bit Mapping with beautiful results. (Blue Note Records)
