Oscar Peterson: Genesis (CD: Proper, 2 CDs) Author Gene Lees named his biography of Oscar Peterson 'The will to swing'.Lees could not have chosen a better title, as one of the most outstanding aspects of Oscar Peterson's work is his unfailing commitment to swinging. Peterson's dexterity and swing have its foundations in deep knowledge and great skill. Oscar's virtuosity makes him stand apart from the large majority of jazz pianists, who obtain their results in spite of generally quite uneven keyboard accomplishment.Peterson's virtuosity, his awesome technical skills combined with his basic rhythmic power and his inexhaustible stamina made him into the most frequently recorded and most popular jazz pianist of the second half of the20th century. Petersons formative years are covered on this 51 track 2 CD set. (Proper Records)

Oscar Peterson: Plays The Cole Porter Songbook (CD: Verve) A delicately swung selection of Porter standards with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen. With the accent firmly on the wonderful melodies rather than improvisation, it remains one of Peterson's most enjoyably straightforward performances. Lovely sound too for 1959.

 | Oscar Peterson Trio: Night Train (CD: Verve) With a cover as distinctive as its music, this CD is one of the finest in Peterson's prolific output. Recorded in 1962, the leader's piano is in sparkling form, buoyed by an exceedingly swinging rhythm section---bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. Containing previously unissued tracks and some alternate takes, the material showpieces Peterson's eclectic style, capacity for harmonic and rhythmic assimilation, and prodigious improvising skills. This is dynamic piano playing, whose invention vies with other masters---e.g. Art Tatum. Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Bill Evans, Erroll Garner. "Night Train" demands a serious place in any collection. (Andrew Clark, Editor, Riffs & Choruses: A New Jazz Anthology. Continuum Publishing.)'Though by no means a concept album, it's one of the best-constructed long-players of the period and its durability is testimony to that as much to the quality of Peterson's playing , which is tight and uncharacteristically emotional.' Oscar Peterson Trio: On The Town (CD: Verve) Recorded at the Town Tavern, Toronto in the summer of 1958, 'On The Town' captures the keyboard giant in the most natural of settings: live with his favoured drum-less trio featuring Herb Ellis and Ray Brown. Few small groups in jazz were built on such a high level of telepathy, and few were so well-rehearsed (Ellis and Brown tirelessly did their homework to keep up with their leader but few pianists played as many notes, or changed keys unexpectedly in the middle of a tune, as Peterson did). Listen out for a glance back to Bird's 'Now's The Time' in 'Pennies From Heaven' but don't miss the delicately lit 'Moonlight In Vermont'. Always elaborate and frequently breathless, this is a fine reissue from Verve's elegant master edition series, which adds five bonus tracks including a version of Clifford Brown's 'Joy Spring'. The recording tapes the cutlery and clink of glasses as well as it does the piano but it adds to the atmosphere of a warm Canadian night of jazz.

 | Oscar Peterson: Skol (CD: Pablo- US Import) Memories of Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club Quintet he led with Stephane Grappelli arise every time the venerable violin giant teams with a master guitarist, as he does with Joe Pass on this live recording from Copenhagen's Tivoli Concert Hall. But it is doubtful that, chair for chair, the Hot Club at its best ever had the power of this all-star quintet, which also includes Oscar Peterson's piano, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen's bass, and Mickey Roker's drums. These six extended performances are especially valuable for giving Grappelli an uncommon opportunity to stretch out on record. The most fitting summary of Skol may be "'s cool." (Fantasy, Inc.)
