Sarah Vaughan: Viva! Vaughan (CD: Mercury) A pianist as well as a vocalist, Vaughan was one of the most gifted and versatile of all jazz singers. Her startling range, keen harmonic ear and effortless delivery earned her a place in Billy Eckstine's famous band in the mid-forties and she went on to make many popular records as well as jazz ones with the greats- Miles Davis, Zoot Sims and Clifford Brown to name just a few. Arranged tastefully by ex-Basie saxophonist Frank Foster and produced by Quincy Jones, 'Viva! Vaughan' is a warm, latin affair from 1964, released then very much on the back of the success of Getz and Gilberto and their single 'The Girl From Ipanema', which Vaughan covers on the opening track. Jobim's lovely 'Quiet Nights' is here too as is a lazily evocative 'Night Song' and a terrific bonus track, 'A Taste of Honey'. Her emphatic delivery lends these afro-cuban moods, samba and bossa pieces more substance than usual- Nat Adderley's 'Jive Samba' really cooks. Put this in your CD player, pour yourself a long, cool one and chill.
