Shelly Manne & His Friends: My Fair Lady (CD: Contemporary- US Import)Shelly Manne & His Friends: My Fair Lady (CD: Contemporary- US Import)
Percussionist Manne and "friends" Andre Previn (piano) and Leroy Vinnegar (bass) play songs from the musical, demonstrating that show tunes and popular music can often provide good improvising vehicles for jazz musicians---and, above all, familiar melodies. And so we have "Get Me to the Church on Time," "On the Street Where You Live," "I Could Have Grown Accustomed to Her Face," "I Could Have Danced All Night." Previn plays them all with sparkling aplomb, Vinnegar drives along the bass lines, and Manne's crisp percussion work holds everyone together. The drummer's drummer. A hugely popular album in 1956. (Andrew Clark, Editor, Riffs & Choruses: A New Jazz Anthology. Continuum Publishing.)

Shelly Manne and his Friends--bassist Leroy Vinnegar and the once and future classical pianist André Previn--had recorded a trio album before this one, Shelly Manne and Friends, but My Fair Lady was the first and biggest-selling of the jazz versions of Broadway shows, TV themes, and film soundtracks later recorded by the trio. Although the Friends made memorable interpretations of Lil Abner, Pal Joey, Gigi, Bells Are Ringing, and West Side Story, their My Fair Lady remains a true classic to this day. (Fantasy, Inc.)

"If a fellow felt like blowing he just stretched out as long as he had something to say" (Manne). Plenty to say here, often at length, from drummer Manne's group of trumpeter Joe Gordon, tenor-saxist Richie Kamuca, pianist Victor Feldman and bassist Monty Budwig, recorded at the Black Hawk club, S.F., in 1959. Fine support percussion from Manne, and distinctive piano from British-born Feldman (e.g. "Vamp's Blues"). A straight-ahead, purposeful approach to the live blowin' gig helps correct the impression American West Coast jazz is sometimes over-arranged and score-dominated.
