Stan Getz: The Sound (CD: Proper, 4 CDs) Stan Getz had all the talents a saxophonist can dream of; exquisite tone, great technical command, an appealing sense of melody and the ability to remain lyrical even at the fastest tempos. Fans and fellow musicians called him The Sound. The highly inspired music on this 4 CD set is a celebration of his exceptional talents. Just some of the top quality musicians alongside Getz on this set are Max Roach, Zoot Sims, Horace Silver, Charles Mingus, Duke Jordan and a whole host of Scandinavian guys who Getz so enjoyed playing with. The set comes with a 44 page booklet containing The Sound's story, session detail and rare photos. (Proper Records)

 | Stan Getz: Early Stan (CD: Prestige- US Import) Early Stan is a fair enough title for this album, since it has plenty of essential Stan Getz. But Early Stan, Terry, and Jimmy might have been even fairer, because Terry Gibbs and Jimmy Raney were the leaders of the record dates that resulted in the 1949 78-RPM singles and 1953 10-inch LP eventually gathered together in a 12-inch LP called Early Stan. Such historical facts aside, the tracks contain some of these men's best recorded work, early, late, or middle. The empathy between Getz and Raney was never greater, and "'Round Midnight" is one of their classic performances. The seven-piece group led by Gibbs was an offshoot of Woody Herman's Second Herd and alive with the spirit of that great band. (Fantasy, Inc.)

Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Harry Edison, Louis Bellson & The Oscar Peterson Trio: Jazz Giants '58 (CD: Verve) This LP contains more than its share of brilliant music. Tenor man Stan Getz meets up with baritonist Gerry Mulligan, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, the Oscar Peterson Trio, and drummer Louis Bellson for three standards and a lyrical ballad medley, but the well-constructed solos on the blues "Chocolate Sundae" (during which every note seems to fit perfectly) are the most memorable. Charlie Byrd: Homage To Jobim (CD: Concord Picante) When Charlie Byrd took to the stage as the opening act of the 26th Fujitsu-Concord Jazz Festival, it became apparent within the first few phrases of Antonio Carlos Jobims Favela that his was going to be one tough act to follow. On this captivating August 1994 evening, Byrdthe guitarist responsible for importing the mesmerizing sound of Brazils bossa nova to the United States in the 60sand his empathetic musical cohorts displayed the perfect balance of virtuosity and sensitivity in their brilliant interpretations of Antonio Carlos Jobims distinctively beautiful melodies, harmonies and contagious bossa nova rhythms. The result is surely one of the most engaging live recordings in Charlie Byrds legendary body of work. (Concord Records)

Stan Getz with Al Haig: Prezervation (CD: Prestige- US Import) In 1949 and '50, when these performances were recorded, Al Haig, Tommy Potter, and Roy Haynes were the premier rhythm section in jazz. They worked clubs with both the master Charlie Parker and the young tenor sax star Stan Getz, and also backed other players and singers in the studios. This excellent anthology contains their only trio session and a Haig sextet date (with Getz, Kai Winding, and Jimmy Raney) in their entirety, plus four tracks that complete two famous sessions documented on Stan Getz Quartets (OJC-121). There are also samples of two jazz vocal styles, as Blossom Dearie and Raney bop and Junior Parker croons. (Fantasy, Inc.)

Stan Getz + Bob Brookmeyer: Recorded Fall 1961 (CD: Verve) A welcome reissue, not just so we can hear more of one of the most distinguished voices on tenor saxophone but also to savour the eloquent Brookmeyer, and including three exceptionally fine originals by the valve trombonist. The springing waltz of his opening 'Minuet Circa '61' is a joy, and 'Who Could Care' a reflective, autumnal ballad of outstanding beauty. Buck Clayton's 'Love Jumped Out' and two standards complete an affable session of warm, swinging jazz. No additional tracks on this one but another precious recovery from the vaults, lovingly restored and presented.
