 | Thelonious Monk: Monk's Moods (CD: Proper, 4 CDs) An instantly identifiable sound is the trademark of all the great instrumentalists in jazz. Recognition of those rare, singular voices has always been rather immediate, but none more so than with Thelonious Sphere Monk, who was without a doubt, one of jazz great instrumental stylists as well as one of the musics most gifted composers. A few bars of Monks superbly idiosyncratic piano and there is little doubt as to the identity of the player. The same applies to Monks compositions, even if performed by another instrumentalist or ensemble. Yet Monks work was long neglected and although a small coterie of musicians including Coleman Hawkins, Mary Lou Williams, Bud Powell, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker recognised his talents from the beginning, Monk laboured in relative solitude during much of his most creative period. This box set spans Monks work and recorded output over three of the most noteworthy record labels he was involved with, consecutively: Blue Note - As far as his compositions are concerned, Monk recorded his most important body of work during his five-year association with the Blue Note label. Prestige - where he recorded some fine work with the likes of tenorist Sonny Rollins. Riverside - which resulted in the album "Monk Plays Duke Ellington", a trio date on which Monk presented an all-Ellington repertoire. Monk launched one of the great jazz labels in jazz history, while Riverside launched the crucial successful part of Thelonious Monks, until this point, seriously overlooked recording career. Thelonious Monk: Criss Cross (CD: Proper, 2 CDs) Thelonious Monk once told Frank London Brown 'Everything I play is different, different melody, different harmony, different structure. Each piece is different from the other one. I have a standard, and when the song tells a story, when it gets a certainsound then it's through, completed'.The most important jazz composer without doubt was Duke Ellington, but not far behind the Duke was Thelonious Monk. Monk, quite rightly so, has always been looked upon as a non-conformist yet the tunes he wrote since the 1940's were played by a wide range of musicians of the day, from Cootie Williams, via Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Dizzy Gillespie to Miles Davis. 31 tracks dating from 1941-51 are presented on this 2 CD set and Monk is supported by the likes of Coleman Hawkins, Art Blakey, Charlie Christian and Milt Jackson. | Thelonious Monk: Monk's Music (CD: Riverside- US Import) Monk's Music is among the most significant of Thelonious's classic Riverside albums. Here he was literally looking back and ahead at the same time, by bringing together Coleman Hawkins (the very first important voice on tenor saxophone) and John Coltrane (on the verge of becoming a major shaping force of the Sixties). Equally notable is the incredible rhythmic support provided by combining Art Blakey and Wilbur Ware; and, justifying the album title, a selection of vital Monk compositions, plus his choice of the 19th century hymn, "Abide with Me" (written by one William H. Monk). (Fantasy, Inc)

Thelonious Monk: With John Coltrane (CD: Jazzland) When Monk and Trane spent six months of 1957 working together at New York's Five Spot Cafe, it was an historic event which certainly should have been exhaustively recorded. But nonmusical conflicts made that impossible, leaving as the only permanent reminders of this momentous encounter the three remarkable quartet selections that highlight this album. (Fantasy, Inc.)

 | Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane: At Carnegie Hall (CD: Blue Note) This never-before heard jazz classic documents one of the most historically important working bands in all of Jazz history, a band that was both short-lived and, until now, thought to be frustratingly under-recorded. The concert, which took place at the famed New York hall on November 29, 1957, was preserved on newly-discovered tapes made by Voice of America for a later radio broadcast that were located at the Library of Congress in Washington DC earlier this year.Monk and Coltrane had been working together for a solid four months by the time they set foot on stage at Carnegie Hall that night. By all accounts, Coltrane had been tentative early on in the Five Spot run, challenged at first by Monks quirky melodies and chord changes, but the 51 minutes of music captured in pristine sound quality on At Carnegie Hall, present the quartet, which was completed by bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik and drummer Shadow Wilson, at the height of their powers. The tapes from that evening at Carnegie Hall were inadequately labeled, filed away amongst the Voice of Americas vast collection of recordings, and apparently forgotten until January 2005 when Larry Applebaum, a supervisor and jazz specialist at the Library of Congress, came upon them by accident during the routine process of digitally transferring the Librarys collection for preservation purposes. Applebaum noticed a set of tapes simply labeled sp. Event 11/29/57 carnegie jazz concert (#1), with one of the tapes barring the sole marking T. Monk. Until now, remarkably little recorded documentation of Monks quartet with Coltrane has been known to exist, a fact that makes this finding all the more significant. (Blue Note Records)

 | Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane: Complete Live at The Five Spot 1958 (CD: Gambit) This recording made in September 1958 by Coltrane's first wife Naima, on a portable tape recorder, can hardly be classified as of professional sound quality, but the rarity of it makes for fascinating listening - as it captures the incredible energy, power and growing confidence of the young Coltrane, backed by the creative, minimalist, rhythmically complex Monk with a band featuring the legendary drummer Roy Haynes, with Ahmed Abdul Malik on bass. They rip through five Monk standards in a manner which more than makes up for the aural deficiencies of the recording. Two newly discovered bonus tracks from this historic live date are also included, both also Monk compositions, : Ruby My Dear and Nutty - both of which had been recorded by Monk & Coltrane in their July 1957 studio session for Riverside.
