Jackie McLean Quintet: Lights Out! (CD: Prestige- US Import)
A perpetual favorite among Jackie McLean’s earlier recordings, Lights Out! finds the hard-swinging young alto saxophonist in 1956 still very much under the wing of Charlie Parker, who had died less than a year earlier. Yet McLean was beginning to find ways out of the seductive artistic security of Bird imitations. For one thing, he was experimenting with tonal variations. For another, he was working with Charles Mingus, and Mingus’s genius as a leader included forcing musicians to look deeply into their most cherished stylistic practices. The McLean of Lights Out! is the hot young bebopper with a slightly acid edge to his sound and a solid blues foundation under everything he played. McLean and trumpeter Donald Byrd occasionally engage in the “pecking” technique of mutual improvisation they developed as members of the George Wallington Quintet. (Fantasy, Inc.)

Jackie McLean: Capuchin Swing (CD: Blue Note RVG)Jackie McLean: Capuchin Swing (CD: Blue Note RVG)
This is pure, exceptional hard bop by Jackie McLean with Blue Mitchell, Walter Bishop, Jr., Paul Chambers and Art Taylor with all the wonderful elements of any classic Blue Note album: memorable compositions, strong solos and great feeling. But Capuchin Swing also finds the great alto saxophonist looking toward new frontiers with the harmonically edgy "Francisco." (Blue Note Records)

Jackie McLean: Bluesnik (CD: Blue Note RVG)
The second great McLean record after 'New Soil' and 19 months on he turns his alto to a celebration of the blues in collaboration with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and a rhythm section of Kenny Drew, Doug Watkins and, once again, drummer Pete La Roca. The title track is a dashing, high-energy workout featuring one of the leader's finest and most logical solos to date. The other tracks are moving and intriguing blues-based essays, two by pianist Drew who reveals himself as a most lyrical and sympathetic accompanist. A delight.

Jackie McLean: Bluesnik (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)Jackie McLean: Bluesnik (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean was already a veteran of the NYC jazz scene by the time he began recording as a leader for Blue Note in 1959. In his first few years with the label McLean recorded frequently, churning out hard bop classics in quick succession. The culmination of this period is undoubtedly Bluesnik, a vibrant 1961 session that brims with immediacy. McLean had the blues on his mind when he entered Rudy Van Gelder’s studio that January with a formidable quintet featuring Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Kenny Drew on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Pete La Roca on drums. Over the course of six original blues pieces the band goes from strength to strength, blazing out of the gate on McLean’s title tune and moving through every hue of blue from the leader’s shuffling “Goin’ Way Blues” to the pianist’s bright theme “Drew’s Blues” and Hubbard’s no-nonsense “Blues Function.”

This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. (Blue Note Records)

Jackie McLean: Destination... Out! (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
By the time Jackie McLean began recording for Blue Note in 1959, the alto saxophonist had already been a stalwart of the NYC jazz scene for nearly a decade having spent the entirety of the 1950s cutting his teeth alongside bebop legends like Miles Davis and Charles Mingus. As the early 1960s progressed, McLean’s innovative hard bop sound began to take on a harder edge and a more adventurous spirit. Inspired by the likes of Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane, McLean started to seek a greater freedom of expression in his music and began to introduce elements of the avant-garde, while never fully relinquishing a grounding in his soulful sense of swing and chordal structures. On his 1963 quintet album One Step Beyond, McLean teamed up with the unique trombonist and composer Grachan Moncur III and brought in vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson instead of a pianist, a move that gave the music a freer, more spacious feel. Inspired by this new musical direction and the tonal qualities of the band, McLean brought Moncur and Hutcherson back into the studio later that year with Larry Ridley on bass and Roy Haynes to record what would be his masterpiece of inside-out jazz: Destination… Out! On four original pieces—three by Moncur (“Love and Hate,” “Esoteric,” “Riff Raff”) and one of McLean’s (“Kahlil the Prophet”)—the quintet goes exploring, conjuring different moods and creating exciting new sounds that still sound fresh today.

Jackie McLean: Tippin' The Scales (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)Jackie McLean: Tippin' The Scales (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
Jackie McLean’s 1960s Blue Note output is a fascinating body of work, especially viewed with the benefit of hindsight. In between recording 2 venturous modernist sessions—Let Freedom Ring and One Step Beyond—that would set the tone for the alto saxophonist’s future explorations, came the seemingly more conventional and relaxed quartet date Tippin’ The Scales. Recorded in September 1962 but not released until 1979, the date featured McLean with Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Art Taylor on drums delivering a swinging hard bop set that presented 2 originals by McLean (“Tippin’ the Scales” and “Rainy Blues”) along with 3 by Clark (“Nursery Blues,” “Nicely,” and “Two For One”), as well as a tender version of Vernon Duke’s “Cabin in the Sky.”

This stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI), and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. (Blue Note Records) view larger image

Jackie McLean: New And Old Gospel (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean was among the most open-minded musicians of his generations and was experimenting with free playing as early as 1962. This unusual March 24, 1967 session added guest artist Ornette Coleman (playing only trumpet!) to McLean’s regular quartet. The material ranges from McLean’s powerful four-part suite “Lifeline” to Ornette’s funky, rocking “Old Gospel.” The music sounds as fresh as if it were recorded yesterday. (Blue Note Records)

Jackie McLean: It's Time! (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)Jackie McLean: It's Time! (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
This impassioned quintet session from 1964 weaves elements of post-bop and free jazz into a supremely spirited program of original compositions by Jackie McLean and the young trumpet sensation Charles Tolliver. McLean and Tolliver were joined by pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Roy Haynes. While the music was classified as "the new thing" at the time, the searing cry of the blues is ever-present in McLean's brilliant alto saxophone playing . The artwork is one of Reid Miles' most memorable cover designs.

Blue Note Records' Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series is produced by Joe Harley and features all-analogue recordings, mastered from the original tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl and presented in deluxe gatefold packaging.
