Larry Young Trio: Testifying + Young Blues + Groove Street + Forrest Fire (CD: Fresh Sound, 2 CDs)Larry Young Trio: Testifying + Young Blues + Groove Street + Forrest Fire (CD: Fresh Sound, 2 CDs)
Larry Young (1940-1979) started off in the early 60s as a soul-jazz organist, and the three albums included on this 2-CD set—”Testifying,” “Young Blues,” and “Street Groove”, are his first as a leader.

Recorded in 1960 and 1962 for the New Jazz/Prestige label, they document a period when the 20 year old organist was starting to establish a name for himself in the jazz scene. On a set of warmly swinging, thoroughly grooving performances, Young is in an astounding, persuasively blues-tinged mood, while guitarist Thornel Schwartz and drummer Jimmie Smith are the personification of steady and sympathetic support, consistently augmented with the addition of bassist Wendell Marshall in “Young Blues”. Tenor saxophonist Joe Holiday can be heard on two of the tunes of “Testifying”, while Bill Leslie sets the right mood for “Groove Street.”

As a bonus, this set includes five tracks from “Forrest Fire”, another 1960 record date with Young and his trio act as backing for the solid blowing of the full-bodied tenor of Jimmy Forrest. These sessions, relaxed and unpretentious, are the epitome of swing-rooted, soulful jazz. (Fresh Sound Records)

Larry Young: Into Somethin' (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)Larry Young: Into Somethin' (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
On 1964’s Into Somethin’—his first album for Blue Note—Larry Young made it abundantly clear that he had his own unique approach to the Hammond B-3 organ. Rather than the tried-and-true soul jazz sound so strongly identified with the instrument, Young explored more modal territory over the course of his six Blue Note albums including this tremendous session featuring tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers, guitarist Grant Green, and drummer Elvin Jones. The remarkable album cover design by Reid Miles made excellent use of a memorable photograph by Francis Wolff.

This Blue Note 80 Vinyl Edition is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. (Blue Note Records)

Larry Young: Unity (CD: Blue Note RVG)Larry Young: Unity (CD: Blue Note RVG)
A scintillating disc, highlighting not only the brilliance of the leader's organ style but also the compositional and instrumental talents of trumpeter Woody Shaw. His 'Zoltan', incorporating the March from Kodaly's Hary Janos Suite, is highly original and stunningly performed. Joe Henderson's tenor is at its most incisive and Elvin Jones' forceful drums propel everyone compellingly forward.. Essential.

Larry Young: Unity (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
Until the emergence of Larry Young, Blue Note’s Hammond B3 organ tradition was firmly rooted in Soul Jazz, having been established by B3 trailblazer Jimmy Smith and soulful players the likes of Big John Patton and Baby Face Willette. However, Young brought an entirely new perspective to the instrument by placing it in a more adventurous post-bop context, an innovative approach that recontextualized its possibilities. Young had introduced these inclinations on his excellent 1964 Blue Note debut Into Somethin’, but with his 1965 album Unity he created a singular masterpiece with a cast of modernist jazz visionaries: trumpeter Woody Shaw, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, and drummer Elvin Jones. The apt album title expressed the undeniable synergy this unique quartet achieved. “Although everybody on the date is very much an individualist, they were all in the same frame of mood. It was evident from the start that everything was fitting together,” Young stated in the album’s liner notes. The program consisted of 3 distinctive originals by Shaw (“Zoltan,” “The Moontrane,” and “Beyond All Limits”), Henderson’s bluesy, hard-swinging “If,” and memorable versions of “Monk’s Dream” by Thelonious Monk and the standard “Softly As In A Morning Sunrise.”

This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. (Blue Note Records)
