Wayne Shorter: Night Dreamer (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
1964 was a pivotal year in the musical life of Wayne Shorter. Early in the year the saxophonist was still a member of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, appearing on classic Blue Note albums like Free for All and Indestructible. That summer he would join the Miles Davis Quintet, cementing a line-up that became one of the seminal bands in jazz history. But before that he stepped out confidently as a Blue Note artist when he entered Van Gelder Studio in April to record his masterful label debut as a leader Night Dreamer. The sublime 6-song set signaled the arrival of one of the most important new voices in jazz, a visionary composer and thrilling improviser with a wholly distinctive sound. Timeless Shorter originals including “Black Nile,” “Virgo,” “Armageddon,” and the extraordinary title track are given transcendent performances by a quintet featuring trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Elvin Jones.

This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. (Blue Note Records)

One of the most exciting and innovative voices in modem jazz, Wayne Shorter was in his final weeks with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers before joining Miles Davis when he recorded this exceptional album with John Coltrane's Rolls Royce rhythm section. His angular improvisations and unique compositions take a left turn at every opportunity, but Shorter makes it all work magnificently. (Blue Note Records)

This magical session is capped off with a previously unissued alternate take of "Dance Cadaverous." (Blue Note Records)

Wayne Shorter: The Soothsayer (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Although not released until 1979, this March 1965 session by Wayne Shorter is a classic. The three-horn front line inspires Shorter as a composer and arranger, and Freddie Hubbard and James Spaulding are a fiery pair of soloists. The rhythm section features the unique combination of McCoy Tyner and Tony Williams. From the intricate darting “Angola” to the melodic beauty of “Lady Day,” this album is just further confirmation of Shorter’s genius as a saxophonist and a composer. (Blue Note Records)

Wayne Shorter: Adam's Apple (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
Wayne Shorter had already set a high bar over the course of his first several Blue Note albums, which included all-time jazz classics including Night Dreamer, JuJu, and Speak No Evil, but 1966’s Adam’s Apple featuring Herbie Hancock on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums immediately joined the ranks of the saxophonist’s greatest recordings and remains a pinnacle artistic statement of Blue Note’s fertile post-bop era. Shorter composed 5 of the session’s 6 tracks including the grooving title track, which surely had producer Alfred Lion dancing around Rudy Van Gelder’s studio. Other highlights of this sublime set include Jimmy Rowles’ arresting “502 Blues (Drinkin’ And Drivin’),” Shorter’s bossa-inflected “El Gaucho,” the tender ballad “Teru,” and the first recording of his timeless composition “Footprints,” which Shorter would record again later that year with the Miles Davis Quintet for the album Miles Smiles. The album closes with the evocative composition “Chief Crazy Horse” featuring Shorter’s trademark harmonic twists and a churning solo spotlight by Chambers.

Wayne Shorter: The All Seeing Eye (CD: Blue Note RVG)Wayne Shorter: The All Seeing Eye (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Shorter's musical depiction of the birth of the world is one of the most inspired moments in the discography of the then-member of the Miles Davis quintet alongside Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter who also feature. The most adventurous of the albums he cut for Blue Note in the mid-sixties, the concept of this high voltage octet- opening with the title tune, representing God's observance of the universe before his act of creation- is ambitious and challenging.

Shifting from the dramatic ('Genesis') through the beautiful ('Face Of The Deep') to the conflictive ('Chaos'), Shorter's largest acoustic outfit he'd worked with at that time- which included Hubbard, Grachan Moncur III and Shorter's brother Alan on flugelhorn- play expressively, with fire, grace and not always in conventional solos but in intriguing ensembles that convey the drama of a most remarkable story.

Wayne Shorter Quartet: Without A Net (CD: Blue Note)Wayne Shorter Quartet: Without A Net (CD: Blue Note)
Without a Net is Wayne Shorter's first Blue Note recording date since August 26, 1970, when he recorded Moto Grosso Feio and Odyssey of Iska. That's nearly 43 years. Shorter has pursued many paths since then, as a member of Weather Report, and as a bandleader. This quartet was assembled for a 2001 European tour and has been playing together ever since. It shows. The interplay Shorter shares with pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Pattitucci, and drummer Brian Blade is not merely intuitive, it is seamlessly empathic.

All but one of these tunes were recorded during the group's 2011 tour. The lone exception is "Pegasus," recorded with the Imani Winds at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. There are six new tunes here; the quartet is credited with two of them. Shorter also revises some others, including set opener "Orbits" (the original was on Miles Davis' Miles Smiles) and "Plaza Real" (from Weather Report's Procession album). The only outlier, "Flying Down to Rio," is a version of the title tune from a 1933 film. (Blue Note Records)
