Art Blakey: The Prime Source (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)Art Blakey: The Prime Source (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)
For 35 years Art Blakey was the pre-eminent leader of the hard-bop movement, a term frequently applied to an intense, hard driving style of jazz that combined elements of bebop, Rhythm & Blues and gospel music, that began to emerge in the early 1950s. Hard bop is usually regarded as being characterized by dark, weighty, earthy timbres, soulful inflections of pitch, blues-like melodic figures, and sometimes harmonies and chord progressions reminiscent of the sanctified church. Hard bop flourished during the late fifties and sixties, experienced a dip in popularity, like most jazz forms, during the 1970s and enjoyed an unprecedented revival from the mid-1980s onwards.

During 35 years Art Blakey led his Jazz Messengers, an ensemble that ranked among the most rewarding in jazz. The Jazz Messengers served as a springboard for talented young musicians who were prepared to push themselves beyond the limit, or burn-out in the process. As a leader, Art Blakey always insisted on complete musicianship and the understanding that without risk jazz is dead. Blakey had no time for timidity or playing it safe, his drumming encouraged daring and brilliance. He consistently stood by his musical principles. In doing so the Jazz Messengers have shaped the style of most small group blowing over four decades. Blakey’s role as a teacher, finder and developer of young talent is unsurpassed in jazz. This 44 track 4CD set presents four early Jazz Messengers line-ups in live settings at Birdland and Cafe Bohemia and also in Columbia studios. (Proper Records)

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk (CD: Atlantic/ Rhino, 2 CDs)
In May of 1957, Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers went into the studio with Thelonious Monk to record a one-off album for Atlantic. The Jazz Messengers were a loose collective of young Jazz musicians, with a constantly rotating lineup to keep the music fresh, and help launch new careers (akin to today's hip hop collectives.)

Blakey had recorded with Monk on various occasions, but this was the first time Monk sat in with the Jazz Messengers. The result is a true meeting of the minds, a beautiful union of Monk's melodies with Blakey's unshakable sense of swing, and Thelonious Monk's only appearance on Atlantic. This 65thanniversary deluxe edition includes an extra disc of previously unreleased outtakes, celebrating the most sensational jazz collaboration of the 1950s.

A Deluxe Edition fully Remastered with a whole extra Disc of Outtakes all but one previously unreleased, with liner notes by Grammy-winner writer Ashley Kahn, photos and Atlantic memorabilia. (Warner Music)

Art Blakey: Three Classic Albums Plus (CD: AVID, 2 CDs)Art Blakey: Three Classic Albums Plus (CD: AVID, 2 CDs)
AVID Jazz here presents three classic Art Blakey albums plus, including original liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. "Big Band", "Jazz Messengers - Hard Drive", "The Jazz Messengers" plus three tracks live from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1959.

Just as Miles had a constant stream of seasoned players in his bands and provided a training ground for young and upcoming musicians, so did Art Blakey with his Jazz Messengers. The list of greats and future greats is certainly impressive from Donald Byrd to Wayne Shorter taking in John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Johnny Griffin and dozens more! Here we find the powerhouse drummer on fine form in a number of different settings. The Big Band was no stranger to Art having cut his teeth with Fletcher Henderson as far back as 1939 and as a member of Billy Eckstine’s Big Band, perhaps the greatest of the modern era, featuring Bird and Dizzy! "The Jazz Messengers" set from 1956 really swings and provides the template for future Messengers line ups and shows how a small combo can provide plenty of room for improvisation. "Jazz Messengers - Hard Drive" from 1957 finds Art joined by tenor Johnny Griffin and pianist Junior Mance who help Art produce his best set since the departure of original members Horace Silver and Hank Mobley. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Moanin (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
More than any other album in the canon of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, 1958’s Moanin’—featuring the great drummer with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt—was the perfect crystallization of the band’s bluesy, soulful sound, and it still stands today as perhaps the most quintessential hard bop recording of all-time. Originally self-titled, the album was later renamed Moanin’ due to the popularity of Timmons’ unforgettable opening track. The album also introduced several indelible Golson compositions that would become standards of the jazz songbook including “Along Came Betty” and “Blues March.”

Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers were a major creative force in modern jazz. They were legendary as representing the archetypal hard bop school of jazz, with a driving blues-flavoured approach. These performances capture the Messengers when Blakey and pianist Horace Silver first formed the group with tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, trumpeter Kenny Dorham and bassist Doug Watkins. This set comprises the performances which were subsequently released on the Blue Note label and showcases the full range of the group’s skill and style. Included is three studio tracks the line-up had recorded at their first session together in November 1954. (Discovery Music)

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: The Big Beat (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
The timeless 1960 hard bop classic The Big Beat was the album that first introduced one of the greatest line-ups of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers to the jazz public with the legendary drummer and bandleader joined by trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt. Shorter was the band’s newest member, and it was immediately clear that his presence would steer the group’s sound in a new more modern direction. Three of the album’s six pieces were penned by Shorter including the swaggering set opener “The Chess Players,” the imaginative “Sakeena’s Vision” written for Blakey’s young daughter, and the tribute “Lester Left Town” which was dedicated to influential jazz tenor forefather Lester Young. However, it was Timmons’ unforgettable gospel-influenced tune “Dat Dere,” a suitably soulful follow-up to the band’s previous hit “Moanin’,” that the album would ultimately become best-known for. This excellent edition of The Jazz Messengers would go on to record a phenomenal run of classic albums including A Night In Tunisia, Like Someone In Love, The Freedom Rider, Roots & Herbs, and The Witch Doctor.
