John Coltrane: Early Trane (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)John Coltrane: Early Trane (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)
On September 1955 John Coltrane joined the Miles Davis Quintet. By that time Coltrane was a seasoned professional musician, a dyed in-the-wool jazz player who had learned his craft in a considerable number of outfits during the preceding ten years or so. Coltrane was nearly thirty years old at the time, a jazz musician who was certainly not universally acclaimed. Thus far Coltrane had failed to impress the jazz audiences at large, although he played in a distinctive but not yet fully formed style. During the next five years after his debut with Miles Davis, Coltrane moved from virtual obscurity to acclaim as the greatest tenor saxophone innovator of the era. This is the era covered in this 4CD set. (Proper Records)

John Coltrane: Out Of This World (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)
After establishing his own quartet in 1960, the paths John Coltrane trail-blazed over the following two years would alienate and enchant jazz fans in equal number. Vilified as "anti-jazz" by some critics, the saxophonist's recordings explored an eclectic range of musical influences: the blues, folk music, Spanish, African and Indian flavours, the twelve-tone system and popular Broadway songs.

This Properbox retrospective tells the whole controversial story. Included is an insightively written 36 page booklet together with complete discography and rare photos,as is the hallmark of this edition. Compiled and annotated by jazz musician and acknowledged expert Simon Spillett. (Proper Music)

John Coltrane & Thelonious Monk: Complete Studio Recordings Master Takes (CD: Essential Jazz Classics)John Coltrane & Thelonious Monk: Complete Studio Recordings Master Takes (CD: Essential Jazz Classics)
The complete studio master takes by the Thelonious Monk Quartet and Septet featuring John Coltrane. Included, as a bonus, is the 13+ minute performance of “Blues For Tomorrow” from the same sessions (in which Monk sits out) and an outstanding alternate take of “Off Minor”.

After returning from his trip to Philadelphia, in mid-1957, Coltrane accepted Monk’s offer and joined his band for a period of six months. They played at New York’s Five Spot Café in a quartet format, but their studio records are limited to what is included on this release. Although all the musicians play beautifully here, what is perhaps most interesting is the presence of tenor sax giants John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins playing in the same session. (Discovery Records)

John Coltrane: Coltrane (Vinyl LP: Prestige/ Craft Recordings)John Coltrane: Coltrane (Vinyl LP: Prestige/ Craft Recordings)
Released in 1957 on Prestige Records, this album was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder on May 31, 1957. It documents Coltrane's first session as a leader, and has been reissued at times under the title The First Trane!. The line-up includes Johnnie Splawn (trumpet), Sahib Shihab (baritone saxophone), Red Garland and Mal Waldron (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Albert "Tootie" Heath (drums). (Universal Music)

John Coltrane: Lush Life (CD: Prestige RVG)
Essentially, saxophonist Coltrane's inimitably "lush" style---intense, inventive, crammed with notes---on mostly ballad material. "Like Someone in Love," "I Love You," "Lush Life" itself, and "Trane's Slow Blues" are all noteworthy, with bass/ drum support from Earl May and Art Taylor, and a B side which adds trumpet Donald Byrd (one track) to a trio of Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Louis Hayes. Early Trane (1950s), but already his power and authority are evident. (Andrew Clark, Editor, Riffs & Choruses: A New Jazz Anthology. Continuum Publishing.)

John Coltrane: Lush Life (CD: Prestige RVG)

John Coltrane: Lush Life (Vinyl LP: Prestige/ Craft Recordings)John Coltrane: Lush Life (Vinyl LP: Prestige/ Craft Recordings)
Released in early 1961, Lush Life was assembled from previous unissued tracks from three recording sessions at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey in 1957 and 1958. John Coltrane's Prestige years began when he joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955. During the next few years, when he was either with Davis or the Thelonious Monk Quartet, he functioned as both leader and sideman for this label. These recordings document the first part of his relatively short but highly influential time in the spotlight. Lush Life, a combination of standards and a blues, treated in the unique Coltrane manner - sound wedded to material in a completely personal way - contains three tracks without a piano. This is the first time he recorded in this manner, other than when Monk was 'strolling,' and it offers another aspect from, and of, Trane. (Universal Jazz)

Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, John Coltrane & Zoot Sims: Tenor Conclave (CD: Prestige- US Import)
This unusual meeting of four tenor saxophone players from different "schools" was part of the Prestige Friday afternoon jam session series but far from a typical outing. The giant forebears of Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and Charlie Parker inform the backgrounds of Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, and John Coltrane, and other influences such as Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, and the Sonnys (Stitt and Rollins) are there, too, depending on which of the four protagonists you're talking about.

With the Red Garland Trio supplying the underpinning, the four tenors meet on the common ground of the blues ("Bob's Boys"), "I Got Rhythm" ("Tenor Conclave"), and two old standards. (The originals are by Mobley.) Rather than the stylistic differences, what stands out here is the compatibility and spirit of the four meeting on this common ground in an uncommon session. John Coltrane: Black Pearls (CD: Prestige- US Import)John Coltrane: Black Pearls (CD: Prestige- US Import)
In addition to their positions of importance in the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-Fifties, John Coltrane and Red Garland recorded a series of studio dates for Prestige in 1957 and '58. Here, as in several of the others, Paul Chambers is the bassist and Arthur Taylor the drummer, with Donald Byrd on trumpet making it a quintet.

There are only three numbers: the title song "Black Pearls"; an extremely swift version of "Lover, Come Back to Me"; and the fast "Sweet Sapphire Blues" which begins with Garland soloing from the gitgo in a long, up-beat exploration before Trane unfurls his "sheets of sound." Byrd gets into that rapid-fire mode, in and among his more evenly-cadenced lines, and Chambers (plucked) and Taylor (brushes into sticks) solo before Garland ends it with a riff credited to Prestige's then-president, Bob Weinstock. John Coltrane: Soul Trane (CD: Prestige RVG)
This album continued the reinforcement of Trane's importance as a stylist. As in Coltrane and John Coltrane and the Red Garland Trio, his first two albums as a leader for Prestige, the material in Soultrane is away from the ordinary. The Garland–Paul Chambers–Arthur Taylor rhythm section is a perfect accompanying unit for Trane who, by this time, was acknowledged to be–along with Sonny Rollins–one of the two most influential tenor saxophonists in jazz.
