Ahmad Jamal: At The Pershing And Other Live Recordings 1958-59 (CD: Acrobat, 3 CDs)
Ahmad Jamal is a modern jazz pianist, composer, bandleader and educator, born in 1930, who has been active in the genre for 70 years. A Pittsburgh native, he started playing professionally in the mid-1940s at the age of 14 and was hailed by Art Tatum even at that stage of his life as “a coming great”. He converted to Islam in 1950 and formed his first trio in 1951, developing a minimalist, spacious style admired by the likes of Miles Davis, with his music prompting reviewer John Morthland to write that: “If you're looking for an argument that pleasurable mainstream art can assume radical status at the same time, Jamal is your guide”. By the mid-50s his recordings and performances had firmly established him on the scene, and during 1958 and 1959 his trio did a series of recorded ‘live’ performances which included the “At the Pershing: But Not for Me” LP, which was a big commercial success and the most highly-regarded and critically acclaimed album of his career, cementing his place in the jazz pantheon.

This great-value 57-track 3-CD set comprises recordings from The Pershing Lounge, Chicago in January 1958, The Spotlite Club in Washington DC in September 1958, Nola’s Penthouse Studio, New York, in February 1959 and the Newport Jazz Festival in July 1959. These recordings represent the complete contents of the albums “At The Pershing: But Not For Me”, “At The Pershing Vol. 2”, “Ahmad Jamal Trio Volume IV”, “Portfolio Of Ahmad Jamal” and “Jamal At The Penthouse”, along with selected titles from the Newport performance. It’s an entertaining collection of some of his most renowned recordings, and a great showcase for a highly distinctive jazz stylist. (Acrobat Music)

Ahmad Jamal Trio: Complete Live At The Pershing Lounge 1958 (CD: State Of Art)
These 1958 performances at Chicago's Pershing Lounge marked the beginning of Ahmad Jamal’s success. The original album “But Not For Me”, included eight of the 43 tunes played by the trio, which were carefully selected by the pianist himself.

Two years later, the album’s success tempted the original producers to release eleven more tunes (tracks 9-19), which were again selected under the supervision of Jamal’s attentive ears. It is believed that the unused material was put aside and subsequently lost. (Proper Music)

Ahmad Jamal: Complete Trio & Quintet Recordings With Ray Crawford (CD: Cherry Red, 2 CDs)
The complete, legendary recordings made by Ahmad Jamal with the guitarist Ray Crawford in Trio and Quintet context. Jamal's trios are considered to be amongst the most important in the history of jazz, creating unique articulations of space, openness and light, which still seem so far ahead of their time and which made such a profound impression on Miles Davis and his arranger, Gil Evans. Jamal's art embodies discipline, restraint, refinement and subtlety and furthermore he swings. Miles appreciated the level of intensity Jamal achieved within such a subtle framework. Compositions such as New Rhumba were transcribed note for note by Gil Evans for Miles Ahead. "I was delighted, " recalled Jamal "We needed that kind of support at the time Miles came along and paid us that compliment". Our edition comprises the albums Chamber Music of The New Jazz, The Ahmad Jamal Trio, The Piano Scene of Ahmad Jamal (with material recorded between 1951 and 1955) and Listen to the Ahmad Jamal Quintet (recorded in 1960). Bonus items include the Miles Davis / Gil Evans recording of Jamal's New Rhumba for the landmark 1957 album Miles Ahead and Gil Evans' Joy Spring which features some joyously melodic guitar from Crawford. Ahmad Jamal: The Awakening (Vinyl LP: Impulse)Ahmad Jamal: The Awakening (Vinyl LP: Impulse)
By 1970, pianist Ahmad Jamal's style had changed a bit since the 1950s, becoming denser and more adventurous while still retaining his musical identity and signature elegance. Jamal's trio - bassist Jamil Nasser (whose double-timing lines are sometimes furious) and drummer Frank Gant, deliver intriguing performances, showing that Jamal was continuing to evolve. Ahmad Jamal: Live At Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase (CD: Telarc Jazz)Ahmad Jamal: Live At Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase (CD: Telarc Jazz)
For all its understated power, Ahmad Jamal's music can still achieve the grand gesture that sweeps together those myriad small details he has scattered along the way. On this weekend in Chicago, 1992, Jamal brought forth music as strong, as intricate, and as well-realized as any previously captured in his long career. Don't mistake that claim for hyperbole: on this disc, you'll hear the ageless Jamal at the top of his game. (Telarc Jazz)

Ahmad Jamal: I Remember Duke, Hoagy & Strayhorn (CD: Telarc Jazz)
Forging the same riveting improvisational intensity that's long made his music so electrifying, Ahmad Jamal radiates romanticism on this release. It is a powerfully fresh tribute to three great American composers who have influenced countless generations of musicians. Jamal's lyricism, awesome technique, and rich textural sound dominate this trio recording. (Telarc Jazz)

Ahmad Jamal: Saturday Morning (CD: Jazz Village)
Following on from the critical and commercial phenomenon that was (the Grammy-nominated) Blue Moon, Ahmad Jamal and his dream team are back with a joyful album made up of the kind of ballads to which only he holds the key. Each one is a moment of grace, shining like a star in the sky of American Classical Music. The album also features one wonderful Duke Ellington cover and a tribute to Horace Silver. With his light-fingered but rhythmic style, Jamal sends us into a sensuous trance and leads us to a musical climax: a sound which is pure groove.

Ahmad Jamal: Live In Marciac - August 5th 2014 (CD & DVD: Jazz Village)Ahmad Jamal: Live In Marciac - August 5th 2014 (CD & DVD: Jazz Village)
Picture Marciac, during a sultry evening in early August, 2014. Like every year, this little town in the Gers region has been turned into the worldwide capital of jazz for a month and under the marquee Ahmad Jamal is stepping out onto the stage with his three fellow musicians. This time, it’s the double bass player Reginald Veal’s turn to set the tempo with a marvellous new track, Sunday Afternoon, which prolongs the magic of the albums Blue Moon and Saturday Morning. The band is in great shape and seems more than ever to function by telepathy. Majestically, Ahmad Jamal bestows upon us a wonderful, intense shot of groove; aside his own compositions, which fill the playlist for most of his set, he gives a nod to Cole Porter and Horace Silver, who has just died and to whom he makes a double tribute, both playing his famous track Strollin' and dedicating a new piece, Silver, to him. The group sounds better than ever, and their pianist has reached the highest echelons of genius. The audience drinks it all in, as we all can today, thanks to this unmissable double album which is a feast both for our ears and our eyes. (Harmonia Mundi)
