Warren Vache & Alan Barnes: The Cobbler's Waltz (CD: Woodville)
Warren Vache and Alan Barnes have been playing together off and on since the late 1980’s. They recorded a string of small band dates on Zephyr Records throughout 90’s and Alan joined Warren’s 11piece band for a 3 month Coast to coast U.S. tour in 2000.

Recently, Alan put his “pet American” up for several weeks at his London abode where they had a delightful time playing Jeeves to each other’s Bertie. Several of Warren’s compositions were polished up during this period and are featured on their recent recording “The Cobbler’s Waltz”on Woodville Records. Warren has simply one of the most beautiful brass sounds in Jazz today and this session couples him with the best mainstream rhythm section in the country.

Alan Barnes, Dave O'Higgins & The Sax Section: Oh Gee! (CD: Woodville)
Saxophonists Dave O'Higgins and Alan Barnes musical association goes back to the 1980s when they were both members of the Pizza Express Modern Jazz Sextet. For this recording they put together a superb band. Saxophonists Sam Mayne and Karen Sharp are mainstays of the UK jazz scene and no nepotism came into play in the choice of Judith O"Higgins - she is a fine section player and accomplished soloist. The rhythm section is one guaranteed to swing - an important factor in both Dave and Alan's musical philosophy.

They covered a wide range of material, from a reduction of Duke Ellington's "Ko-Ko", through Benny Carter's original arrangement of "Doozy", to Alan's original "Orejas De Cerdos" and Dave's brilliant editing and harmonization of a Dexter Gordon solo on "The Chase".

The album recorded in the old-fashioned way: a run through then straight to record. What you hear is what happened. You can instantly here all the individual sounds of the players - no need to indicate whose playing what - each player is easily recognisable, at ease in their own skin, and has their own way of doing things. (Proper Music)

Alan Barnes Octet & Josie Moon: A Requiem (CD: Woodville)
‘A Requiem’ is a jazz and poetry commission commemorating the end of The First World War and subsequent conflicts across a century. It’s an exciting and ambitious commission of new music that brings together the creative imagination of poet Josie Moon and the dynamic composition talents of Alan Barnes and Pat McCarthy.

The music is arranged by Alan for a stellar line-up of jazz musicians: bassist Dave Green, saxophonists Gilad Atzmon and Dean Masser, trombonist Mark Nightingale, drummer Sebastiaan De Krom and trumpeter Neil Yates. It is a bold and challenging work that examines the impact of conflict on individuals across a century, moving but ultimately uplifting and soulful work, which invites the audience to both remember the history of conflict and resolve to do better in the future. Alan Barnes Octet: Copperfield (CD: Woodville)Alan Barnes Octet: Copperfield (CD: Woodville)
This new suite of pieces from the esteemed jazz saxophonist/composer Alan Barnes, takes you through the characters and scenes of David Copperfield, alongside his octet made up the finest players on the UK scene, including Bruce Adams, Mark Nightingale, Karen Sharp, David Newton and Clark Tracey.

The eight virtuoso musicians bring the characters and scenes to life, switching from hilarity to pathos with a skill that would have done credit to Dickens himself. A cheery clarinet plays Copperfield, the lost orphan Little Em'ly is a lyrical tenor, Mr Dick flies his kite in the personage of a soaring flugelhorn and trombone, Mr Micawber expresses "Something will turn up!" on the piano and Uriah Heep writhes around on the bass clarinet. Just as we see David progress through the trials of his life, so the movements of this suite seem to develop along with him. (Proper Music)
