Andy Sheppard: Nocturnal Tourist (CD: Provocateur)Andy Sheppard: Nocturnal Tourist (CD: Provocateur)
Recorded and mixed at Christchurch Studios, Bristol, the album combines familiar Sheppard hallmarks - devastating melody and saxophone solos that are muscular and uniquely lyrical by turn - with an inventive and completely personal use of new technologies. Across the nine tracks - eight Sheppard originals plus an up-to-date version of the Harry Warren-Mack Gordon classic I Wish I Knew - Andy's saxophone improvisations are woven through and into samples of street sounds and spoken word, half-heard conversation, washes of electronic sound, tape loops and programmed beats. Accompanying Andy - who plays tenor and soprano saxophones, WX 11 Wind Synth, electric guitar, midi guitar and keyboards - is French drummer and percussionist Stephane San Juan. Andy Sheppard: Dancing Man & Woman (CD: Provocateur)
Dancing Man & Woman, his second album for Provocateur Records, features two special guests, the legendary bassist Steve Swallow, and the stunning young tabla player Kuljit Bhamra in addition to the line up seen on his last album - John Parricelli, Steve Lodder, Chris Laurence and Paul Clarvis. The album finds him developing characteristically fresh ideas within territory familiar to Sheppard aficionados - irresistible melody and irresistible grooves inspired by music from India, Latin America and Africa, with solo statements that are muscular and compellingly lyrical in turns. Andy Sheppard: Movements In Colour (CD: ECM)
Although Andy Sheppard has been featured on a dozen albums with Carla Bley for WATT, this is his first album for ECM proper. The British saxophonist heads an international quintet in a programme of self-penned pieces, all buoyant and strongly melodic. Sheppard’s elegant saxophone and the strongly-contrasting guitars of Parricelli and Aarset are lifted up by the rhythmic drive of Arild Andersen’s muscular bass and the crisp, dynamic tabla of Kuljit Bhamra, a musician well known in the UK as a key figure in the Asian pop and bhangra movements. Andy Sheppard, Michel Benita & Sebastian Rochford: Trio LIbero (CD: ECM)Andy Sheppard, Michel Benita & Sebastian Rochford: Trio LIbero (CD: ECM)
UK saxophonist Andy Sheppard’s second ECM album introduces his freely lyrical new trio with Michel Benita and Sebastian Rochford. All three players share a sense of stylistic open-mindedness. Drummer Rochford is one of the young players changing perceptions of British jazz with bands Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland. Algiers-born French bassist Benita, who cites Charlie Haden and Scott LaFaro as influences, has played with Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz and in the ELB trio with Nguyên Lê and Peter Erskine. Repertoire here includes originals by Sheppard, Benita and Rochford, plus group improvisations and the standard “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows.” In all contexts, interaction is highly creative, as Benita and Rochford respond perceptively to Sheppard’s melodically and rhythmically inventive lines. Recorded July 2011 at Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizzera, Lugano. (ECM Records)

Andy Sheppard Quartet: Surrounded By Sea (CD: ECM)
Extending the range of his widely-praised Trio Libero project with French bassist Michel Benita and Scottish drummer Seb Rochford, Andy Sheppard adds the Norwegian guitarist and electronics wizard Eivind Aarset to his band for 'Surrounded by Sea'.

With Aarset's ambient drones and electronic textures as a backdrop, Sheppard and co seem to have even more space to explore than on the saxophonist's acclaimed Trio Libero recording (2786630). The music embraced here includes new compositions by Sheppard, Benita and Rochford, open improvisations, the Elvis Costello tune "I Want To Vanish", and the Gaelic traditional ballad "Aoidh, Na Dean Cadal Idir" which appears in three variations, a thematic thread through the album. 'Surrounded by Sea' was recorded at Lugano in August-September 2014 with Manfred Eicher producing.

with Eivind Aarset (guitar and electronics), Michel Benita (double bass) & Sebastian Rochford (drums). (Proper Note)

Andy Sheppard Quartet: Romaria (CD: ECM)Andy Sheppard Quartet: Romaria (CD: ECM)
Andy Sheppard’s quartet extends the musical explorations begun on the 2015 release Surrounded By Sea, an album praised by Télérama for its “poignant serenity.” In this new programme of compositions by Sheppard (plus the title track by Brazilian singer-songwriter Ranato Teixeira), the drones and washes of Eivind Aarset’s guitar and electronics – aided by the generous acoustics of Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI – help to establish a climate in which improvisation can take place. There’s a highly atmospheric, ambient drift to the music which Sheppard clearly finds liberating, as do Michel Benita and Seb Rochford, free to move in and out of conventional rhythm section roles and to make impassioned statements of their own. Romaria was recorded in April 2017 and produced by Manfred Eicher. (ECM Records)
