 | Blue Mitchell: Out Of The Blue (CD: Riverside- US Import) Firmly established by Big 6 (OJCCD-615-2) as a new star in the Riverside stable of artists, Blue Mitchell in late 1958 took Benny Golson and a stellar rhythm section into the studio for Out of the Blue. Having been heralded by Cannonball Adderley as something different, Mitchell brought to modern jazz an uncloying and nostalgic sweetness that predated the bebop trumpet heroes who influenced but did not dominate his style. Golsons tenor saxophone playing, full of muscle and liquidity, made a fine match and foil for Mitchell. Some of Golsons best work of the period is in this album. They are handsomely supported by pianist Wynton Kelly, drummer Art Blakey, and bassists Paul Chambers and Sam Jones. (Fantasy, Inc.)Trumpeter Richard "Blue" Mitchell joins composer-saxist Benny Golson---aided by Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers/ Sam Jones (bass) and Art Blakey (drums)---on a mix of blues and tuneful originals, and even a "Saints. " The familiar quintet line-up for Blue Note , which maximizes group cohesion and solo exposure. Mitchell's forthright trumpet, Golson's breathy warm tenor tones and Kelly's taut, buoyant piano, propelled by a superb rhythm team, make this a dynamic---yet always relaxed---session. Excellent material and superior personnel. (Andrew Clark, Editor, Riffs & Choruses: A New Jazz Anthology. Continuum Publishing.)
