Mette Henriette: Drifting (CD: ECM)Mette Henriette: Drifting (CD: ECM)
After Mette Henriette’s critically acclaimed, self-titled first recording comes Drifting – and album pervaded by trio conversations of idiosyncratic and original expression. With Johan Lindvall returning on piano, new addition Judith Hamann on cello and herself on saxophone, Mette’s chamber musical elaborations prove of a concentrated and exploratory quality, marked by subtle yet intense interaction. Motifs and recurring patterns crystallize and reveal a concise, intricate narrative. The saxophonist-composer explains how “this album is in movement. It’s on its way somewhere and has its own pace – its creative agency is fundamentally different from what I’ve done previously.” Recorded in Oslo, completed in Studios La Buissonne and produced by Manfred Eicher, Drifting presents the trio’s deep investigations into hushed textures and rich tones with precision and clarity. Lars Danielsson Liberetto: Cloudland (CD: ACT)Lars Danielsson Liberetto: Cloudland (CD: ACT)
Good things are worth waiting for. Lars Danielsson had recorded just a few tracks for a new Liberetto album in late 2019. So, when a window appeared in September 2020 between the lockdowns across Europe, he seized the opportunity to bring his fellow band-members back to his studio near Gothenburg to finish what they had started. Those who know how attractive and approachable Liberetto’s music is will find all their expectations fulfilled on “Cloudland”. The 'elegant lyricism' and 'unerring groove' which Canadian writer John Kelman (All About Jazz) spotted in 2011 in the band’s first album are to be found in abundance on this, their fourth. Karl Strømme Quintet: Dynalyd (CD: Riverboat)
Being at the very heart of the vibrant Nordic jazz scene, what sets the Karl Strømme Quintet apart from their contemporaries is the way their respect for the modern melodic jazz tradition is mixed with references and experiences from other musical styles, giving their music a fresh and exciting edge. Inspired by the likes of Chet Baker, Miles Davis and Kenny Wheeler, band leader and trumpeter Karl Strømme gives the music a unique flavour with the use of an analog synthesizerr which he plays in tandem with the trumpet, and in his words ‘gives simpler but stronger melodic lines when improvising - like painting with a broader paintbrush’.

Strømme’s beautiful compositions are inspired by the Norwegian landscape and the band’s respect for the modern jazz tradition is mixed with references and influences from other musical styles. A must-have album for fans of Tord Gustavsen Trio, Jan Garbarek, Esbjörn Svensson Trio and Lars Danielsson. (Proper Music)

Nils Landgren with Janis Siegel: Some Other Time (CD: ACT)Nils Landgren with Janis Siegel: Some Other Time (CD: ACT)
Of all the great classical maestros of his generation, Leonard Bernstein was the key advocate of jazz. He was not only a profound authority on jazz music, he could also play it on the piano and used its elements when he composed. All the stranger that jazz musicians have practically never adapted Bernstein. These were the exact thoughts of ACT boss Siggi Loch who suggested to Nils Landgren that he create a tribute to the great 20th century composer. And Landgren didn t have to think twice about it: 'I have always been a fan of Bernstein...'. He put together an 'absolute dream team': the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, an exquisite jazz band, the world-class arranger Vince Mendoza and an authentic New Yorker: Janis Siegel from the legendary Manhattan Transfer. 'Time Is A Blind Guide' is both the title of Thomas Strønen's album and the name of his new Norwegian-British ensemble. Anders Jormin’s new Swedish-Japanese project returns the highly distinctive voice and fiddle of Lena Willemark to ECM (her first appearance on the label in more than a decade), and introduces koto player Karin Nakagawa. In their collaborative music the Japanese classical tradition and the stark, archaic sounds of the koto, allied to Jormin’s muscular bass improvisations, form a unique context for Lena’s sung poems, delivered in her native Älvdals-dialect. Traditions and non-idiomatic improvising are cross-referenced, and new paths are opened up. (ECM Records)

Jakob Bro: Gefion (CD: ECM)
Gefion is Danish guitarist Jakob Bro’s first ECM album as leader, following recordings for the label as sideman with Paul Motian and Tomasz Stanko. Like the work of those masters Bro’s balladeering distils a sense of jazz history in its specific and highly personal atmospheres. The open forms of Bro’s compositions leave plenty of space for his companions – drum legend Jon Christensen and creative bassist-of-the-moment Thomas Morgan - to make their statements, interactively and in parallel. And there is space too for the listener’s imagination to follow the flow and the delicate melodic tracery of Bro’s electric guitar in this thoughtful and poetic album. Gefion was recorded in Oslo’s Rainbow Studio in November 2013 and produced by Manfred Eicher. (ECM Records)

Jakob Bro: Uma Elmo (CD: ECM)Jakob Bro: Uma Elmo (CD: ECM)
With Uma Elmo, his fifth album as a leader for ECM, Danish guitarist Jakob Bro presents a new trio featuring Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen and Spanish drummer Jorge Rossy. Astonishingly, given the trio’s musical synergy, the first time these three musicians ever performed together was for the album’s sessions at the Swiss Radio studio in Lugano, with ECM founder Manfred Eicher producing. Uma Elmo reaffirms the observation about Bro’s work by London Jazz News that “there is no hurry to this music, but there is great depth.” Among the album’s highlights is opener “Reconstructing a Dream,” a darkly lyrical reverie. “To Stanko” is Bro’s hushed tribute to the late, great Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, who featured the guitarist in his quintet for the ECM album Dark Eyes. Another homage to a late elder is “Music for Black Pigeons,” which was given its evocative title by saxophone sage Lee Konitz. Listeners will recognize Henriksen’s whispering, poetic sound from his 2008 ECM album Cartography, as well as his collaborations for the label with Trio Mediaeval and Tigran Hamasyan. Rossy is well known to jazz fans on both sides of the Atlantic, particularly for his decade-plus tenure in Brad Mehldau’s career-making first trio. As for the leader, DownBeat aptly noted in its review of his previous ECM album, Bay of Rainbows, that “Bro’s guitar is luminous… his music both hypnotic and dramatic.” (ECM Records)

Jakob Bro & Joe Lovano: Once Around The Room - A Tribute To Paul Motian (CD: ECM)
On Once Around The Room ECM recording artists and key jazz musicians from several generations unite in a small ensemble to celebrate the musical legacy of drum icon Paul Motian in a big way. Joe Lovano and Jakob Bro lead a party of seven through fiery originals that recall the idioms and idiosyncrasies which Motian brought to light over six influential decades behind the drums. Lovano and Motian had been intimate colleagues for many years with their most notable collaboration being the groundbreaking trio featuring Bill Frisell – the lineup released three albums on ECM. Jakob Bro on the other hand made his ECM debut on Paul’s album Garden of Eden (2006). On Once Around The Room, compositions by Joe and Jakob appear alongside collective improvisation and Motian’s own “Drum Music”, seamlessly tied together and developed by an accomplished musical collective with stalwarts Larry Grenadier, Thomas Morgan and Anders Christensen respectively on bass as well as drummers Joey Baron and Jorge Rossy. Oddarrang: In Cinema (CD: Edition)Oddarrang: In Cinema (CD: Edition)
With a new home at innovative UK label Edition Records Oddarrang’s third album stands as their most accomplished to date. Not only have they confirmed the promise of the hugely successful Music Illustrated (2007) and Cathedral (2011) but they’ve also developed a formidable reputation as one of the most exciting new acts to emerge from Scandinavia to date. Regulated by drummer/composer Olavi Louhivuori’s clear approach to composition and arrangement, In Cinema is a remarkable achievement and an album set to scale new heights.

The title In Cinema provides a clue to the darker, edgier, sound of this work compared to the earlier albums. Originally written for four independent films and later developed for the album the soundscapes are uncompromising, contrasting emotive melodies than reach deep and touch the listener on a very personal level with intense dynamic pick ups built on guitar riffs (Lasse Sakara) and uplifting, soaring melodies carried by the unusual cello (Osmo Ikonen )/trombone (Ilmari Pohjola) front line and underpinned by staunch bass playing (Lasse Lindgren). Marius Neset & London Sinfonietta: Snowmelt (CD: ACT)
Marius Neset burst onto the scene with his first album as leader in 2011, and was instantly hailed as combining “Brecker's power and Garbarek's tonal delicacy and being “on his way to being one of the biggest new draws on the circuit” (Guardian). The album "Snowmelt" is his most ambitious, cherished and personal project to date. In these concentrated works, Neset has sought out chaos and dissonance, he has also been drawn to lyricism and tenderness, and then worked at finding a balance between the extremes, using compositional methods which subliminally bring out the continuities between them.

The three main compositions on “Snowmelt” are the fruit of intense work during the period from 2012 to 2015. Given Neset's long, considered process, the scale of the undertaking, and the sheer amount of work, time and thought that have gone into his compositions, it comes as no surprise that each listen brings seems to bring more revelations. There is always something more here for the listener to discover and unravel. (Harmonia Mundi)

Marius Neset & Danish Radio Big Band: Tributes (CD: ACT)Marius Neset & Danish Radio Big Band: Tributes (CD: ACT)
"This album marks a new phase," says Marius Neset. "It was the last thing I did in Copenhagen, which has been my life for the past seventeen years." In late 2019 the saxophonist and composer moved from the Danish capital to return to his native Norway. In "Tributes", recorded shortly before he left, he marks this point of transition with music that has astonishing freshness - and unmistakably vivid feelings of joy and fulfillment.

"Tributes" is an album where everything seems to click in a particularly happy and enjoyable way. Neset has found an ideal context - and the right musicians - to mark the end of one chapter in his life and to turn the page for the beginning of another. (ACT Records)

Marius Neset: Happy (CD: ACT)
It is no exaggeration to say: Norwegian tenor saxophonist Marius Neset plays in his own league. In addition, he is one of the most fascinating and versatile composers in jazz and far beyond - which, among other things, currently takes him as far as London's Royal Albert Hall. Downbeat states, "Marius Neset is not the future, but the present of European jazz."

The album "Happy" features Neset with a new, top-class quintet. The album is divided into two parts: In the first half, playful, intricate, energetic songs dominate. And in the second part, Neset & Band take the listeners into a calmer suite. What all pieces have in common: You can hear the musicians' pure joy of playing in every note. (ACT Records)

Phronesis: Parallax (CD: Edition)
Extraordinary communication between the players is often the foundation of extraordinary music making – as Phronesis prove every time they play. Years of performing, touring and recording have given the three members of the trio a matchless rapport. That inspires an ever-flowing fountain of new music, captured to perfection on this, the Anglo-Scandinavian trio’s sixth CD and their fourth for Edition Records.

Recorded in a single day at London’s fabled Abbey Road studios, Parallax is a brilliantly realised piece of music-making. It has all the standout features of the trio’s work. Rhythmic drive. Constant shifts in mood and texture. Drama heightened by dazzlingly fast reactions. All leavened by a melodic sense all three draw on as much when improvising as composing. (Edition Records)

Iiro Rantala: My History Of Jazz (CD: ACT)Iiro Rantala: My History Of Jazz (CD: ACT)
Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala offers his personal history of the music that captivated him when he was 13. "My history of jazz" takes us from Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, upon which Rantala threads the album like a string of pearls, to George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington, Juan Tizol, Thelonious Monk and the Swedish cool jazz saxophonist Lars Gullin, alongside five original Rantala compositions. (Harmonia Mundi)

Iiro Rantala: My Working Class Hero (CD: ACT)
A homage to John Lennon. John Lennon would have been seventy-five on October 9th 2015. On 'My Working Class Hero,' the Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala pays tribute to this master of modern song. Throughout the whole album, what may well sound effortless is in fact the result of a long and exacting process by which Rantala - in close discussion with producer Siggi Loch - has worked scrupulously on transforming the original material. The task they have given themselves has been to take world-famous songs, simple works of genius such as 'Imagine', Woman or 'All You Need Is Love,' and adapt them in a way that something new emerges, while preserving the essence of each composition. In this, Rantala has succeeded in ways that are endlessly surprising. The solo recording 'My Working Class Hero' is a dialogue with many dimensions: between Rantala and the instrument, between the room and its acoustics, with jazz legacy and pop history, and plainly between the pianist and his icon John Lennon. (Harmonia Mundi)

Iiro Rantala, Lars Danielsson & Peter Erskine: How Long Is Now (CD: ACT)Iiro Rantala, Lars Danielsson & Peter Erskine: How Long Is Now (CD: ACT)
After the album “My Working Class Hero,” dedicated to John Lennon and “Tears for Esbjörn,” a homage to the influential Swedish pianist, “How Long Is Now?” puts the spotlight fairly and squarely back on to the Finnish pianist, composer and life-force Iiro Rantala. This new trio album with Peter Erskine (drums) and Lars Danielsson (bass) constitutes a many-faceted summing-up of a happy and resoundingly creative phase of Rantala’s life.

Rantala’s compositional horizons are mostly what defines “How Long Is Now?”, but he also has a conscious intention to take a jazz trio in a specific direction: “The basic concept,” he says, “is to avoid the basic concept of the jazz piano trio and to make it more groovy, with simple melodies.” Seven of the thirteen compositions here are by Rantala himself, three tracks by the other players in the trio, and three more are by others who, in their different ways, have helped to construct Rantala’s appealing musical personality - Jimi Hendrix, Kenny Barron and Johann Sebastian Bach. Modern jazz elements are skilfully intertwined with classical music and special guests, including trombonist Øyvind Brække, also add their special touches. For Cycle of Silence, Frøy Aagre focuses fully on the soprano saxophone; a form of self limitation which fully brings to bear the captivating naturalness of her incredibly mature music.

A striking musical rapport between Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen and Dutch pianist Harmen Fraanje is palpable in the duo’s quietly lyrical investigations on Touch of Time. These are delicate melodies and textures, flowing between two musicians, who are deeply in tune with nuances of tone-shadings and the detailed development of a musical idea. In both freely improvised forms and carefully wrought themes, their instruments connect gracefully, picking up and finishing each other’s phrases. Trygve Seim’s ECM debut instantly established his reputation, winning the German Record Critics Prize as Album of the Year (Jahrespreis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik). In the International Herald Tribune, Mike Zwerin observed that “Different Rivers is melancholy, lonely, hypnotizing music – harder to escape from than to listen to. Like a fireplace in an ice palace, you get hooked on it; it's almost physical. ... Seim's version of the ECM sound presents a wind-instrument chamber ensemble, a sort of slow-floating, pianissimo little-big band with occasional understated kicks. The shadow of Gil Evans hovers. The horn-blowers finesse their personal, breathy, non-symphonic textures from behind the beat.” Recorded 1998 and 1999. (ECM Records)

First leader date for prizewinning Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick who has already contributed significantly to ECM discs by Manu Katché, Jacob Young and Iro Haarla, and co-directed the popular jazz-ambient-rock group Jaga Jazzist. Here his melodically intense trumpet sings over fractured rhythms and grooves. Jon Balke’s performance on acoustic and electric pianos is a marvel of supportive invention, Audun Kleive hammers home the beats, and Stian Carstensen from Farmer’s Market guests on pedal steel guitar. The resourceful Eick plays vibes and guitar as well, but it is his trumpet that is the subject of this attractive set, moving through a programme of many colours. (ECM Records)

Mathias Eick: Midwest (CD: ECM)Mathias Eick: Midwest (CD: ECM)
Mathias Eick reflects on distances travelled in this intensely melodic set of original compositions, which makes an imaginative journey from Hem, the tiny Norwegian village where the trumpeter grew up, to the vast plains of Dakota in the American Midwest. It was to the Midwest that hundreds of thousands of Norwegians travelled by sea in the 19th and early 20th centuries - and naturally they took their music with them. In similar spirit Eick, a Norwegian improviser-composer strongly influenced by North American jazz, here reintegrates some of the colours and textures of his native folk music in these newly-created pieces. In the frontline of the line-up featured here he is partnered by the brilliant violinist Gjermund Larsen, whose roots are in the Norwegian folk tradition. Trumpet and violin exchange lines and soar together above a brilliant rhythm section with Jon Balke at his most lyrical, Helge Norbakken periodically finding pulses that can suggest tribal drumming or buffalo hooves, and the resourceful Mats Eilertsen helping to drive the music forward. The original inspiration for the album was sparked by a gruelling North American tour: “I’d been out on the road for a long time and was feeling homesick. Then we reached the area called the Rural Midwest and I suddenly felt as if I was home. I had a sense of why the early settlers would want to build their farms there. It reminded me very much of parts of Norway. ” (ECM Records)

Mathias Eick: Ravensburg (CD: ECM)
One of the pleasures of Mathias Eick’s Midwest album was hearing his vaulting trumpet supported by violin, an instrumental combination further developed on Ravensburg. The new violinist in Eick’s ensemble is Håkon Aase, one of the up-and-coming players of the new Norwegian scene, whom attentive ECM listeners will already know from his work with Thomas Strønen’s group. The core Eick road band is further shored up by the addition of Helge Andreas Norbakken, who interacts excitingly with fellow drummer Torstein Lofthus. Eick is in great form as a writer on this showing, deploying driving rhythm at the bottom end of his music and soaring melody at the top in this series of pieces which add up to a kind of collective family portrait. Ravensburg was recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio in June 2017 and produced by Manfred Eicher. (ECM Records)

Mathias Eick: When We Leave (CD: ECM)Mathias Eick: When We Leave (CD: ECM)
Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick’s expressive playing, which according to the New York Times radiates a “pristine yet penetrating tone”, is remarkably well complemented in the company of his gifted supporting players and fellow travelers. Violinist Håkon Aase, one of the outstanding improvisers of his generation, shadows the leader with lines that reflect a profound background in folk as well as jazz. Drummers Helge Andeas Norbakken and Torstein Lofthus mirror their exchanges, as they interact with purring precision. Near the centre of the action, pianist Andras Ulvo and bass guitarist Audun Erlien ferry ideas between frontline and rhythm section and make statements of their own. On several tracks, the delicate swell of Stian Carstensen’s pedal steel guitar adds a dimension of mystery. When we leave was recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio in August 2020. (ECM Records)

Jon Balke: Warp (CD: ECM)
'Warp' situates the solo piano of Norway's Jon Balke within a subtle architecture of composed soundscapes, in fluctuating dimensions of space. "As always," says Balke, "the more you explore and discover, the further you want to go, and things are not so simple anymore. It's a very interesting process." And what begins as gently exploratory solo piano gradually acquires an almost hallucinatory aspect.

Balke's solo piano was recorded at Oslo's Rainbow Studio, and the sound images were recorded and processed by Balke and Audun Kleive. Additional field recordings by Balke were integrated in the mix of the album at RSI Studio Lugano in September 2015. 'Warp' was produced by Jon Balke and Manfred Eicher. It is the pianist's second solo album for ECM, following the 2007 release 'Book of Velocities', a sequence of aphoristic pieces with affinities to Kurtág and Ligeti, described by Jazzwise as "a fascinating statement that is as beckoning as it is beguiling". Jon Balke: Discourses (CD: ECM)Jon Balke: Discourses (CD: ECM)
Jon Balke’s unique solo work blurs distinctions between composition, improvisation and sound design as Discourses further develops the methodology introduced with the Norwegian pianist’s Warp album. Integrated in the resonant sound of his piano music are “layered soundscapes” of processed material which Balke describes as “distorted reflections and reverberations from the world.” Underpinning the project are some thoughts about language, and the notion of discourse and dialogue as fading concepts in an era of confrontational rhetoric. Balke: “In this work I had the framework of language with me from the beginning. As the political climate hardened in 2019 with more and more polarized speech, the lack of dialogue pointed me towards the terms that constitute the titles for the tracks.” Discourses was recorded at Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo in December 2019, and produced by Manfred Eicher. Ketil Bjørnstad: Early Piano Music (CD: Hubro, 2 CDs)
With ‘Early Piano Music’, Ketil Bjørnstad’s beautiful solo albums ‘Preludes’ Vols.1 & 2 and ‘Pianology’ from the mid-1980s are made available once again. These recordings have been unavailable since the mid-90s, and have been very much in demand.

These three albums are from the middle period of Ketil Bjørnstad’s career, and were recorded in 1984 and 1987. The music evokes imagery, and like so much of Bjørnstad’s music it straddles the border between classical and jazz. All the music on the records has been composed, but there is plenty of space for improvisation. (Proper Music)

Ketil Bjørnstad: Rainbow Sessions (CD: Grappa, 4 CDs)
Presented in a new design, accompanied by newly written liner notes by Bjornstad, this special 4CD boxset of The Rainbow Sessions celebrates Ketil Bjornstad's 50 years as a musician and artist.

At 16 years old Ketil Bjornstad debuted as a pianist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in the University ceremonial hall, the Aula. The acclaimed writer and musician celebrates 50 years as a musician and artist in 2019. Bjornstad's 50th anniversary as an artist kicks off with a reissue of "Rainbow Sessions", earlier released as a limited edition in 2006. This is Ketil Bjornstad's homage to the world known Rainbow Studios and the Steinway grand piano. When studio owner and sound guru Jan Erik Kongshaug in 2004 was moving the studio to a new location, the idea to make the last to record in the old studio and the first to play in the new, was born. Two solo piano albums were planned, at the time it turned into three, and for this release evolves into four. This celebratory edition consists of five different Rainbow sessions recorded in the period 2013-2017, which Bjornstad has put together into a fourth bonus CD. Everything is presented in a new, wonderful design, accompanied by newly written liner notes by Bjornstad. (Proper Music)

Norwegians Ketil Bjørnstad and Terje Rypdal - a rare and possibly unique duo combination of electric guitar and acoustic piano - in an exciting live album recorded before an enthusiastic audience in Leipzig’s Opera House. This strongly melodic, often rocking CD marks the return to ECM after a decade for cultural polymath Bjørnstad. (New Note)

Ketil Bjørnstad: The Light (CD: ECM)
Subtitled “Songs of Love and Fear”, “The Light” brings together Ketil Bjørnstad’s “Four Nordic Songs”, compositions for female voice and accompaniment written over a 30 year period, with a song cycle based on poetry of John Donne (1572-1631). Bjørnstad: “The intellectual energy in Donne’s poetry, which was always receptive to the metaphysical, is also nurtured by emotional excitement, and it is this unique combination that has held such powerful appeal to me as a composer.” (ECM Records)

Ketil Bjørnstad, Tore Brunborg & Jon Christensen: Remembrance (CD: ECM)Ketil Bjørnstad, Tore Brunborg & Jon Christensen: Remembrance (CD: ECM)
Ketil Bjørnstad and Jon Christensen have been musical associates for almost 40 years. Christensen played on Bjørnstad’s very first recordings in the early 1970s, and when Ketil came to ECM for “Water Stories” in 1993 the drummer was once again on board, staying to become a charter member of the pianist’s Sea Quartet through the 1990s. This long alliance gives plenty of ‘remembrances’ to draw upon, and Bjørnstad’s compositions provide contexts and climates in which memories can be newly experienced. The project is also forward-looking: the old friends are joined by saxophonist Tore Brunborg, in his third ECM showing this season (following sessions with Tord Gustavsen and Manu Katché) for some joyful playing. Ketil’s chord patterns provide a centre from which Tore and Jon can launch their explorations... (ECM Records)

Ketil Bjørnstad: Nightwalker (CD: Grappa, 2 CDs)Ketil Bjørnstad: Nightwalker (CD: Grappa, 2 CDs)
Nightwalker is a suite inspired by Ketil Bjornstads own experiences as a 'nightwalker' ...in nature, in the streets of Oslo or in a musical landscape. In Ketil's own words:" A nightwalker can hold an entire life in his head while he is walking. This suite is based on both dreams and experiences, states of mind we all have, with their sudden shifts, and often with a dramatic arc we don't understand, because it is only afterwards that we can grasp what happened and why things turned out as they did. The entire suite was written in the course of the winter, spring and summer of 2022, that dark year that none of us had envisaged.

CD2 contains the Nightwalker suite played on the classic Fender Rhodes piano, sent through an equally classic Leslie that creates this almost ghostly intensity and a unique atmosphere which give the suite a totally different vibe. (Proper Music)

Bobo Stenson Trio: War Orphans (CD: ECM Touchstones)
Characteristically broad in its stylistic range, this 1997 recording begins with a tune by Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez and ends with Duke Ellington’s “Melancholia”. In between are original contributions by Anders Jormin and Bobo Stenson and two pieces by Ornette Coleman, including the deeply-felt title track. “There is great freedom in Ornette’s melodies,” says Swedish pianist Stenson, a masterful player who subtly explores the emotional atmosphere of every tune. “In all tempos, in all keys, in all musical situations, his notes hang in the air like existential moments of coming into being.” -Jazz Times (ECM Records)

Bobo Stenson Trio: Cantando (CD: ECM)
The reconfigured Bobo Stenson Trio in a performance of characteristically wide arc. Material this time includes original compositions, group improvising and pieces by Peter Eben, Alban Berg, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Silvio Rodriguez. Master pianist Stenson, long term bassist Anders Jormin and alertly responsive young drummer Jon Fält have developed a richly detailed sound-world like nothing else in modern jazz – at once an extension of the jazz piano tradition and, with its windows opening onto classical music and world folklore, a force apart from it. (ECM Records)

Bobo Stenson Trio: Cantando (CD: ECM)

Bobo Stenson Trio: Indicum (CD: ECM)Bobo Stenson Trio: Indicum (CD: ECM)
Free playing, Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s “Oft Am I Glad”, tunes by Bill Evans and George Russell, a Norwegian hymn, contemporary composition by Ola Gjeilo, a Wolf Biermann protest song, Ariel Ramirez.’s folkloric “La Peregrinacion”, ... Wide-ranging repertoire has become a hallmark of Bobo Stenson albums. But it’s not just the eclecticism that is striking: Stenson, Jormin and Fält take these far-flung sources and make an organic, breathing music out of them ... Stenson, of course, has long been one of the greats of Scandinavian jazz, and an ECM artist since the first years of the label. But there is a balance of energies in this particular trio – clear-edged lyrical piano playing, rootedness and keen choice of notes from the bass, and detailed, textural drumming – that is especially satisfying. Recorded in Lugano in November and December 2011. (ECM Records)

Bobo Stenson Trio: Contra La Indecisión (CD: ECM)
The great Swedish trio of Bobo Stenson takes a stand against indecision in a decisively beautiful new album. As ever, the trio draws upon a wide range of source materials. A yearning title song by Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez, Bartók’s adaptation of a Slovak folk song, a piece from Mompou’s Cançons I Danses collection, and Erik Satie’s Elégie are integrated into the programme, alongside original compositions by Stenson and Anders Jormin and group improvising. So strong is the group’s character and the musical identity of each of its members that the integration of this material always feels organic and logical. Stenson’s lyrical touch, Jormin’s folk-flavoured arco bass and Jon Fält’s flickering, textural drumming are all well-displayed on Contra la indecision, the trio’s first new recording in six years. Produced by Manfred Eicher, the album was recorded at Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI studio in May 2017. (ECM Records)

Bobo Stenson Trio: Sphere (CD: ECM)Bobo Stenson Trio: Sphere (CD: ECM)
The Bobo Stenson Trio’s ability of covering far-reaching idioms and wide-ranging repertoire within the scope of their personal diction has become both hallmark and custom, inspiring the New York Times to say the pianist “makes sublime piano-trio records without over-playing. It’s pulsating, with long improvised phrases; it’s alive.” Charting an equally subtle and idiosyncratic path through originals and melodies derived from various Scandinavian composers, the distinguished group proves of a particularly supple alchemy on Sphere. Here, a variety of musical tenets coexist in the unique blend, which the Swedish pianist has wrought, developed and refined over decades of collaboration with ECM and Manfred Eicher, who, as Bobo says “brings out the musicians’ best qualities” and produced the record. The pianist’s cohorts, Anders Jormin on bass and drummer Jon Fält, together accompanying the leader since Cantando in 2008, are more than ideal musical partners to Bobo’s soft touch and infinite appetite for interplay. Bobo: “We don’t have a way of playing ‘ready-made’. Things crystallise in the moment and we adjust to that. And that’s the quintessence. That’s the joy of playing together, to never do the same thing twice and to be determined about that.” The album was recorded at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano, in April 2022. (ECM Records)

Tord Gustavsen Trio: Changing Places (CD: ECM)
Introducing a new piano trio from Norway. Tord Gustavsen’s young group, already making waves in the Far North – where “Changing Places” has soared into the pop charts – is telling new stories within the framework of the jazz tradition. This is music that sings, at once gentle and robust. The songs Gustavsen writes sound like standards-in-the-making: lyrical, immediately memorable songs, songs of an appealing freshness, yet sophisticated in their involvement with the melodic line. And the trio improvises, with flair and originality, inside their structures. (ECM Records)

The Ground is the eagerly awaited follow-up to Changing Places, the most successful ECM debut of the last decade, an award-winning album that captured the imagination of the world’s jazz critics and secured a huge international following for the Tord Gustavsen Trio. Their new record is more earthy and its blues influence nearer the surface but the sound is mellow, caressing, sensual, and the melodies are again strong and simple, once heard remaining in the mind. Two years after “Restored, Returned” introduced this line-up and with extensive touring behind them, on “The Well” the four musicians of the Gustavsen Quartet really blossom as a band in a programme of new tunes by Tord. Sax player Tore Brunborg is given an important voice here, his melodic lines combining bluesy sonority and Nordic cry. Gently but effectively propelled by the subtle pulses of drummer Jarle Vespestad and bassist Mats Eilertsen, Gustavsen’s gospel-tinged, unhurried piano playing displays a characteristic warmth and tenderness. Tord Gustavsen Quartet: Extended Circle (CD: ECM)
The sixth ECM album from Tord Gustavsen, recorded in Oslo in June 2013, quietly but most assuredly takes the Norwegian pianist’s music to the next stage of its development. Gustavsen’s quartet with Tore Brunborg, Mats Eilertsen and long-term associate Jarle Vespestad has matured into a group whose interactions draw strength from restraint, patiently building the music toward its climaxes. Here are new gospel-tinged pieces and ballads from Tord’s pen, gentle and luminescent group improvisations, and an ecstatic interpretation of the Norwegian traditional “Eg Veit I Himmerik Ei Borg” (“I Know A Castle In Heaven”).

Tord Gustavsen Trio: The Other Side (CD: ECM)

“This is the chill-out as a state of grace, and it can go as deep as you like. Sublime,” wrote the Independent on Sunday of the Gustavsen’s trio’s Being There, released in 2007. Over the last decade Tord has explored other ensemble forms and formats, but on The Other Side - recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio in January 2018 – he opens a new chapter in his piano trio story, with faithful drummer Jarle Vespestad, and excellent new bassist Sigurd Hole. Hole’s approach to his instrument, drawing on folk influences as well as modern jazz, is ideally suited to Gustavsen’s slowly-developing, deeply melodic pieces. (ECM Records)

On the album Opening, Tord Gustavsen reveals a fresh angle to his particularly unique trio investigations into Scandinavian folk hymns, gospel, chorale and jazz, as he introduces a different voice on bass. With a new fellow-traveller on board and its recording premiere in Lugano's Auditorio Stelio Molo, the trio discovers inspired new ways to interact with each other, using innovative approaches to sound and technique in the process. Made up in equal parts of intricately textured improvisations and understated melodic hooks, the group’s conversations bring an enticing unfamiliarity to the language the Norwegian pianist has developed over almost two decades of collaboration with ECM. Bugge Wesseltoft: Songs (CD: Jazzland)
Renowned as an innovator who has blended jazz with electronics and world music influences, the Norwegian pianist/keyboard player Bugge Wesseltoft, returns to his jazz roots with a solo album of classic jazz standards performed exclusively on the piano.

Bugge Wesseltoft is never still, always moving. His music, since the release of ‘New Conceptions of Jazz’ 15 years ago, has continuously crossed musical frontiers, and always questioned the need for these frontiers to exist at all. Yet what remains certain is the fact that Bugge is a Jazz man - through and through. Now, on ‘Songs’, he takes a fresh look at the music that made him what he is, the songs and compositions that have informed this jazz sensibility throughout his career. No electronic sleight of hand or post-production: this is pure musicianship.

Bugge covers standards from the 1930s onwards such as “Darn That Dream”, “My Foolish Heart”, “How High the Moon” and “Giant Steps”. His meditation on music that has inspired many before him is deeply contemplative, and is often evocative of the spirit of the originals, while venturing into spontaneous arrangements both unexpected and truly satisfying. Bugge Wesselftoft: Be Am (CD: Jazzland)
In the 25 years since Norwegian pianist, composer and producer Bugge Wesseltoft founded Jazzland Recordings, he has engaged in numerous group projects and collaborations such as New Conception of Jazz, duos with the likes of Sidsel Endresen, Henning Kraggerud and Henrik Schwarz, one-off projects such as Trialogue, Bugge and Friends, and OKWorld! And of course, the super-trio Rymden. However, it is in his solo material that we can glimpse the true soul behind the effervescent and mercurial mind of one of the most influential and important Norwegian musicians of an entire generation.

On 'Be Am', Wesseltoft has allowed his creative impulses to wander where they may - no preset rules to govern the composition and production, no obligations to (not) use electronics, not even a will to be totally alone. This is pure playing and composition, where the music speaks freely by whatever means it will. (Proper Music)

Rymden: Reflections & Odysseys (CD: Jazzland)Rymden: Reflections & Odysseys (CD: Jazzland)
'Reflections & Odysseys' is the debut album by a veritable European jazz supergroup that sees pianist Bugge Wesseltoft return to the piano trio format with the Swedish rhythm section of Magnus Öström and Dan Berglund, who shot to fame as two-thirds of the Esbjörn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.).

This is music that reflects all aspects of the Scandinavian milieu of the 21st century, filled with rugged dynamism, extended playing techniques, brooding or melancholic atmospheres. It offers cinematic and epic sounds, cascading drama, crashing and splashing, tension and release. It delivers melodic, high-octane unison riffs, Minimalism immersed in rich improvised tapestries, vocal doubling of melodies, and moments of growling menace. Rymden does this with minimal electronic trickery, with Wesseltoft moving between piano and Rhodes, and Berglund and Öström coaxing just about every possible sound from their instruments. (Proper Music)

Price:  £13.99

Rymden: Space Sailors (CD: Jazzland)
Rymden - pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, bassist Dan Berglund and drummer Magnus Öström - have launched their second mission, 'Space Sailors'. It is the perfect sequel to 2019's 'Reflections and Odysseys', their highly acclaimed debut that spawned an equally acclaimed series of live performances.

The trio have taken the dynamics, textures, moods, and perfect blend of subtle detailing and big sonic gestures to new levels, and have picked up new elements of 60s psychedelia and punk energy along the way. The prog and fusion elements you already know and expect are still here, but with different colours and markings.

Featuring a more diverse sonic palette, with electronic keyboards and various effects coming further into play, there would be a danger of the trio becoming reliant upon the trickery these things afford, but instead they are perfect garnishes to Rymden's musical recipe of core compositions rich in melody, deep exploratory soloing, and musical elaborations and in-the-moment re-imaginings. And although each member has their (almost perfectly equal) share of individual composer credits, the overall signature is clearly Rymden. (Proper Music)

Beady Belle: On My Own (CD: Jazzland)
Recorded in New York City, 'On My Own' is the eighth album by Norwegian group Beady Belle. It features a strong - but not overpowering - undercurrent of 70s soul and vocal jazz, mixing intimacy and exuberance, and pulsations both urban and urbane. The musicians include Bugge Wesseltoft (who is also the producer) on keys, Gregory Hutchinson on drums, Reuben Rogers on bass, saxophonist Joshua Redman, trumpeter Mathias Eick and vocalist Torun Eriksen.

Beady Belle is led by charismatic vocalist/composer Beate S. Lech, whose compositional and lyrical skills are showcased here as never before, weaving new tapestries through which her voice is the golden thread. Melodically gripping, harmonically intricate, lyrically intelligent (without pretentiousness), and underpinned by solid grooves. With each new release, her voice has become richer, more capable, and laced with nuance and subtle expressiveness. Simply put, there is no-one else like her. (Proper Music)
