Barbara Morrison: I Wanna Be Loved (CD: Savant)
Barbara Morrison, one of the world's most delightful and endearing jazz personalities returns to the recording studio and brings her good friend, tenor saxophonist Houston Person with her for her third recording on Savant Records. Her patented Music in the Morrison Manner, featuring blues, standards and even an occasional pop tune, has endeared her to audiences on both coasts and earned her a place among the most talented and skilled jazz vocalists working today. Morrison's delivery and vivaciousness has the ability to charm listeners while her timing and intonation are virtually flawless and the subtle perfection of her phrasing evokes the great vocalists of the past. The spirit of Dinah Washington hovers over this recording with many of the Great Lady's tunes receiving a Morrison Makeover while Houston Person weaves his husky-toned arabesques around the timeless melodies. Monica Zetterlund / Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Orchestra: It Only Happens Every Time (CD: Inner City)Monica Zetterlund / Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Orchestra: It Only Happens Every Time (CD: Inner City)
Monica Zetterlund was a Swedish actress who loved jazz and sang in a pure and quietly expressive voice. Born in 1937, she started out as a jazz singer before she started an acting career that made her a household name in Sweden, appearing in films and on television. Zetterlund never gave up singing jazz and in 1964 she recorded with the Bill Evans Trio. Another highpoint of her jazz career was recording 'It Only Happens Every Time' with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1977. A jazz institution for over a decade at that time, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra is in fine form on this set, with the key solos being by cornetist Jones and baritone player Pepper Adams. Otherwise, Zetterlund is the main star, sounding at her best on Blossom Dearie’s “Long Daddy Green,” an emotional “He Was Too Good To Me” and Jerome Richardson's swinging “The Groove Merchant.” (Discovery Records)

Joe Stilgoe: New Songs For Old Souls (CD: Linn)
Firmly established as a performer and songwriter of considerable skill, Joe Stilgoe's first studio album on Linn is a masterclass in giving nostalgia a contemporary twist. 'New Songs For Old Souls' is Joe's first studio album for Linn Records, following his signing to the label in 2014. The album comprises twelve songs with ten terrific originals by Joe, including three thrilling big band numbers: 'Nobody Cares Like Me', 'Pocket Song' and a new version of 'Gold On Silver', previously heard on Songs On Film Live.

Joe's seamless ability to mix contemporary style with a fond nostalgia for the Golden Era of Gene Kelly and Louis Prima means his ‘old soul' finds a perfect match in these ‘new songs'. Joe's trademark catchy hooks and clever lyrics (full of intricate rhymes and clever twists reminiscent of Irving Berlin and Cole Porter) create an instant familiarity. Joe also duets with Liane Carroll on a wistful cover of Brian Wilson's ‘I Just Wasn't Made For These Times', one of the album's two non-original songs. (Linn Records)

Freda Payne: Come Back To Me Love (CD: Artistry Music)Freda Payne: Come Back To Me Love (CD: Artistry Music)
'Come Back to Me Love', showcases Freda Payne's powerful voice backed by a sophisticated big band. She performs a mixture of standards and originals with arrangements by her frequent collaborator, Grammy-winner Bill Cunliffe.

Freda Payne burst onto the collective pop consciousness in 1970 with the hit single, "Band of Gold" and then with the anthemic message single, "Bring the Boys Home." While she is well known for those iconic songs, she is also a jazz singer of renown. She sang and toured with the Quincy Jones Big Band and remembers once being summoned to meet Miles Davis at Harlem's famed Apollo Theatre. Her debut LP 'After The Lights Go Down Low' was released on legendary jazz label Impulse! in 1964. In more recent years she performed as Ella Fitzgerald in the theatrical biopic Ella Fitzgerald: First Lady of Song.

The big band on 'Come Back to Me Love' includes Bill Cunliffe on piano and synth, Pete Christlieb and Bob Sheppard on saxophone and Joe LaBarbera on drums. (Proper Note)

Robin McKelle: Impressions Of Ella (CD: Doxie)Robin McKelle: Impressions Of Ella (CD: Doxie)
From country music to rhythm and blues, Robin McKelle has made an entire career exploring the rich vastness of American music. With Impressions of Ella, McKelle returns to her traditional jazz roots and finds herself right at home. Introducing Robin McKelle, her eponymous 2006 debut, delved into a dozen timeless standards of the swing era ("Come Rain or Come Shine," "Night and Day," "On the Sunny Side of the Street"). For her latest effort, McKelle draws from only one source and perhaps her greatest artistic influence, Ella Fitzgerald. "The concept of the music of Ella came about because she was my first introduction to vocal jazz. I learned so much from her singing - the style of her swing feel and her singing resonates [with] me."

To help bring her concept to life, McKelle enlists a brand new trio of venerated jazz players: Kenny Washington on drums, bassist Peter Washington, and NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron on piano. "I wasn't intimidated to make music with them, but [their] résumés were like, 'Wow!' [Am I] going to be good enough? Are we going to connect? The exciting thing was having the opportunity to sing over them as a trio; that was such a huge joy." The bond between a vocalist and an accompanist is perhaps one of music's most profound and extraordinary unions. Barron, a living jazz piano virtuoso, keenly understands this more than most. Cutting his teeth as a sideman for Philly Joe Jones and Dizzy Gillespie, Barron has recorded more than 50 albums, spanning over five decades, as leader. With Impressions of Ella, she doesn't attempt to reinvent the wheel or limit her potential for creative expression. While it lauds our "First Lady of Song," the album also marks an inevitable coming of age for McKelle's career in jazz, as the fruits of her hard work and years of training finally ripen and bear fruit. Carol Sloane: Out Of The Blue + Live At 30th Street (CD: Fresh Sound)Carol Sloane: Out Of The Blue + Live At 30th Street (CD: Fresh Sound)
As a young singer, Carol Sloane didn’t expect to be one of the biggest hits at the 1961 Newport festival. Introduced on an afternoon program of lesser lights, she so impressed the meager audience there that she was brought back for a full house on a night program. She repeated her success and Columbia Records signed her immediately.

Her main assets were her warmly appealing timbre, good range and secure time, all amply demonstrated in these two albums made in 1961-2. On “Out of the Blue”, a record with memorable contributions by soloists Bob Brookmeyer, Clark Terry, Nick Travis and Jim Hall, she is backed mostly by Bill Finegan’s arrangements. On “Live at 30th Street,” Carol sings great jazz in an intimate studio atmosphere, on which her natural talents and ebullient musical personality shine through to a set of stellar standards. (Fresh Sound Records)

Carol Sloane: Sophisticated Lady (CD: Audiophile)

Carol Sloane: Whisper Sweet (CD: HighNote)
Carol Sloane has made dozens of albums, starting in 1961. Her work is admired by some of the greatest artists in jazz, and by discerning audiences here and in Japan. It always was. She made Whisper Sweet in April 2003, immediately after a six-night engagement at New York's Village Vanguard. In this instance Carol's focus was on the sort of tried-and-true standards on which she can work her own unique style of vocal magic. What resulted is an album of mellow midnight jazz: songs as familiar as old friends, performed by five musicians and a singer who know how expressive quiet can be. (HighNote Records)
