Charles Lloyd & Chico Hamilton Quintet: The Complete 1960-1961 Sessions (CD: Phono, 2CDs)Charles Lloyd & Chico Hamilton Quintet: The Complete 1960-1961 Sessions (CD: Phono, 2CDs)
This edition contains, for the first time on a single set, the complete 1960-61 sessions that marked the earliest collaborations of Charles Lloyd and Chico Hamilton. Presented here in chronological order and, FOR THE FIRST TIME ON CD IN THEIR STEREO VERSIONS, the dates originally appeared on the LPs The Chico Hamilton Special (Columbia CL1619/CS8419) and Selections from ‘Bye Bye Birdie’/ ‘Irma La Douce’ (Columbia CL1590/CS8390). The two 1961 tracks, which had never previously appeared on CD, were originally released on the rare compilation LPs Who’s Who in the Swinging Sixties (Columbia CS8565) and Jingle Bell Jazz (Columbia CS8693).

The music here is particularly interesting in that Charles Lloyd is the only horn heard throughout these recordings, while on most of their other collaborations the cello was replaced by a trombone player. The complete 1962 Hamilton/Lloyd album Drumfusion (Columbia CS8607), featuring Garnett Brown on trombone, plus the only alternative take from that session (originally released on the LP compilation The Giants of Jazz (-CS 8770), have been added here as a bonus. Charles Lloyd & Jason Moran: Hagar's Song (CD: ECM)Charles Lloyd & Jason Moran: Hagar's Song (CD: ECM)
“Hagar’s Song”, the newest release from long-time ECM luminary Charles Lloyd, is an interactive duo recording with Jason Moran, the pianist who has been a key member of Lloyd’s latter-day quartet, contributing to the albums Rabo de Nube (2008), Mirror (2010) and Athens Concert (2012). The album features pieces especially dear to Lloyd, ranging from compositions by Billy Strayhorn (“Pretty Girl” a/k/a “Star-Crossed Lovers”), Duke Ellington (“Mood Indigo”), George Gershwin (“Bess, You Is My Woman Now”) and Earl Hines (“Rosetta”) to a standard strongly associated with Billie Holiday (“You’ve Changed”), Brian Wilson’s most famous Beach Boys ballad (“God Only Knows”) and a Bob Dylan song definitively interpreted by the Band (“I Shall Be Released”), played in memory of the late Levon Helm. The centerpiece of the set is the title suite composed by Lloyd and dedicated to his great-great-grandmother, who was taken from her home in south Mississippi at age 10 and sold to a slave-owner in Tennessee. “When I learned the story of her life it moved me very deeply,” says Lloyd. “The suite mirrors the stages of her life; loss of family, loneliness and the unknown, dreams, sorrow, and songs to her newborn children.” (ECM Records)

Charles Lloyd: Trios - Chapel (CD: Blue Note)
Charles Lloyd has long been a free spirit, master musician, and visionary. For more than 6 decades the legendary saxophonist and composer has loomed large over the music world, and at 84 years old he remains at the height of his powers and as prolific as ever. As a sound seeker, Lloyd’s restless creativity has perhaps found no greater manifestation than on his latest masterwork Trio of Trios, an expansive project that encompasses three albums, each a deft change of musical context that presents him in a different trio setting.

The first album in the series Trios: Chapel features guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan. The Chapel Trio was named after the group’s inaugural performance in December 2018 at Coates Chapel in San Antonio. Frisell had already cemented his relationship with Lloyd as a charter member of The Marvels when he was invited by Lloyd to join him in a special concert at Coates Chapel on the Southwest School of Arts campus in San Antonio. Lloyd was already familiar with the acoustic properties of the chapel and knew it would not support drums or percussion. He was also aware that Frisell had recorded in a duo context with Morgan, with whom he had developed a close musical rapport, and suggested they might all come together as a trio. The Coates concert left an indelible impression on Lloyd, who later said, “Our first performance has always had a magical place in my memory bank.” (Blue Note Records)

It was live streamed without an audience on September 9, 2020, during the first year of the global pandemic. Lloyd was joined by Gerald Clayton on piano and Anthony Wilson on guitar, both sons of famous musician fathers — Gerald is the son of West Coast bass legend John Clayton, while Anthony is the son of celebrated bandleader, trumpeter, and composer Gerald Wilson, in whose big band Lloyd once played when he moved from Memphis to study at the University of Southern California when in his teens. Charles Lloyd: The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow (CD: Blue Note)
Unsettled by the state of the world in 2020, Charles Lloyd began conceiving of a musical offering in the form of a new studio recording featuring a new band, a quartet that would be a first-time convening of four distinctive voices with the legendary saxophonist joined by pianist Jason Moran, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Brian Blade. In Spring 2023, around Lloyd’s 85th birthday, the project at long last flowered with the creation of an expansive double album titled The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow. A majestic body of work that finds one of the most significant musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries still at the peak of his powers, the album presents a collection of Lloyd originals new, old, and reimagined.
