The Bebop Shop : Changes: Post-Bop Modernists : Don Rendell & Ian Carr
Rendell went on to make numerous appearances at Klooks Kleek as he always drew a crowd. This date was recorded on 11th September, 1963 with a line-up of Don Rendell (tenor/soprano saxophone). Kenny Baker (trumpet), Glenn Hughes (Baritone Saxophone), Johnny Mealing (piano), Chick Andrews (drums) and Lennie Williams (bass). The band play covers like 'Billy's Bounce', 'Mean to Me' and 'Straight No Chaser' with the front line cutting loose with some amazing solos. (Proper Music) Price: £12.99
Mixing the gravitas of the veteran saxophonist Rendell with the ambitious and eclectic tastes of co-leader Carr the unit was a crucible of Brit-jazz development, swiftly moving from orthodox Hard Bop to a style unquestionably its own.
These three previously unissued sessions (both studio-taped and live) capture the band in transition from its early incarnation with Colin Purbrook in the piano chair through to the wilder, free-flowing, moods that followed Michael Garricks arrival in 1965.
Long-term Rendell/Carr fans will welcome new versions of the quintets classic tracks Dusk Fire, Jubal and Hot Rod, as well as several group-penned compositions heard here for the first time. (Rhythm & Blues Records) Price: £12.99
