Don Rendell: Live At Klooks Kleek (CD: O.M. Swagger)Don Rendell: Live At Klooks Kleek (CD: O.M. Swagger)
Don Rendell is one of the legends of British Jazz. Although best-known for the classic albums like Shades of Blue and Dusk Fire he recorded in the 60s as part of the Don Rendell Ian Carr Quintet he made his name in the 50s as one of the leading tenor players on the British scene moving from side-man to recording under his own name. Thus, when Dick Jordan and his partner Geoff Williams set up their London club, Klooks Kleek, the special guest on the opening night in January, 1961 was Don Rendell.

Rendell went on to make numerous appearances at Klooks Kleek as he always drew a crowd. This date was recorded on 11th September, 1963 with a line-up of Don Rendell (tenor/soprano saxophone). Kenny Baker (trumpet), Glenn Hughes (Baritone Saxophone), Johnny Mealing (piano), Chick Andrews (drums) and Lennie Williams (bass). The band play covers like 'Billy's Bounce', 'Mean to Me' and 'Straight No Chaser' with the front line cutting loose with some amazing solos. (Proper Music)

Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet: BBC Jazz Club Sessions 1965-1966 (CD: Rhythm & Blues)
Creating ‘a most interesting groove which combines a good deal of avant garde experimentation with the jazz fundamentals of logic and swing’ (Melody Maker), the Don Rendell-Ian Carr Quintet has gone down in British jazz history as a cult band, its few commercially-issued albums remaining among the most collectable of their kind.

Mixing the gravitas of the veteran saxophonist Rendell with the ambitious and eclectic tastes of co-leader Carr the unit was a crucible of Brit-jazz development, swiftly moving from orthodox Hard Bop to a style unquestionably its own.

These three previously unissued sessions (both studio-taped and live) capture the band in transition from its early incarnation with Colin Purbrook in the piano chair through to the wilder, free-flowing, moods that followed Michael Garrick’s arrival in 1965.

Long-term Rendell/Carr fans will welcome ‘new’ versions of the quintet’s classic tracks Dusk Fire, Jubal and Hot Rod, as well as several group-penned compositions heard here for the first time. (Rhythm & Blues Records)

Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet: BBC Jazz Club Sessions 1965-1966 Vol.2 (CD: Rhythm & Blues)Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet: BBC Jazz Club Sessions 1965-1966 Vol.2 (CD: Rhythm & Blues)
The Rendell/Carr Quintet has long been regarded as among the most iconic ensembles in 1960s British jazz, famed for its unique blend of musical personalities and the equally singular ‘style’ which resulted from its blend of experience, youth and creative ambition. This, the second R&B release of previously unissued material by the band, captures a moment of genuine jazz history with its inclusion of Michael Garrick’s debut broadcast with the quintet. Two further radio appearances find the band hitting its stride on material mixing themes familiar from its studio LPs with compositions not heard elsewhere in the Rendell/Carr discography. Don Rendell Quintet: Space Walk (Vinyl LP: Decca)
Space Walk was as much a valedictory as transitionary album for Rendell. It was his last for Denis Preston, the fabled producer behind Lansdowne Studios, described by Neil Ardley as a ‘rare Diaghilev like figure’ who steered many of the key figures of the British jazz scene into the studio when nobody else would record them. It was also Rendell’s final project for EMI Columbia and his last as a leader for a major record label. But as much as the album is a farewell to one chapter, it also marked the way forward to the next.

Vinyl audio remastered & cut from the original master tapes by Gearbox Records. Limited Edition 180grm pressing. Includes audio download voucher. (Universal Music)
