Masabumi Kikuchi Trio: Sunrise (CD: ECM)Masabumi Kikuchi Trio: Sunrise (CD: ECM)
An ECM debut from Masabumi Kikuchi and a last session from the great Paul Motian. Motian and Kikuchi were friends for many years and Paul understood the idiosyncracies and the wayward charm of the Japanese pianist’s highly personal style perhaps better than anyone. The trio - completed by Zen bassist Thomas Morgan - makes new art out of the interactive free rubato ballad. A strangely beautiful album. (ECM Records)

John Mayer: Etudes/ Radha Krishna (CD: First Hand)
John Mayer's success through the 1960's with Indo-Jazz Fusions saw the release of four LP's over a four year period. Indo-Jazz Suite (1966), Indo-Jazz Fusions (1967) ,Indo-Jazz Fusions II (1968), and Etudes (1969), Sonet SNT603 which is the only LP not to have been re-released until now.

Two groundbreaking LPs on one CD, wonderfully remastered at Abbey Road Studios - Both albums appear on CD for the first time. “Etudes” was the last Indo-Jazz Fusions release with the old personnel. Four more albums were released between 1993 and 2000 with different band members.

“Radha Krishna”, which combines Indian modes with a strong classical Western influence, was originally released by EMI in 1971. Comprising of a large ensemble, including sitar, tabla, drums, sax, string trio, soprano, tenor etc... and featuring inspired solos from Tony Coe, Chris Taylor and Clem Alford. (Discovery Records)

Manu Katché: Neighbourhood (CD: ECM)
Manu Katché’s first leader date for ECM finds him fronting a remarkable band, assembled by producer Manfred Eicher, which brings the French-African drummer together with Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko. Two of Stanko’s gifted young associates, pianist Marcin Wasilewski and bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, complete an ensemble which plays Manu’s music with enormous assurance, as if they’ve been playing together for years. (ECM Records)

Manu Katché: Playground (CD: ECM)Manu Katché: Playground (CD: ECM)
Eagerly awaited second ECM album by French-African drummer Manu Katché. Recorded in New York’s Avatar Studio in January 2007, “Playground” picks up where the best-selling “Neighbourhood” left off: in the interim the project has coalesced into a rip-roaring and fully-integrated band. Manu’s group, featuring a Polish/Norwegian confederacy of young players, is energized by his hard driving drums and by his compositions which invite spirited solos... Together, the quintet - whose strong new frontline features Mathias Eick and Trygve Seim - makes exciting, zestful music. (ECM Records)

Manu Katché: Third Round (CD: ECM)
Intensified commitment to the French-African drummer’s programme of “beautifully mutated grooves and jazzy themes” (to quote The Guardian) distinguishes Manu Katché’s third ECM album. Inside an all-new line-up, bassist Pino Palladino nonchalantly reinforces the groove element – he and Katché have much shared history as sessioneers – and helps the pulses of Manu’s tunes to dance. Pianist Rebello has both delicacy of touch and energy to burn, and saxophonist Brunborg, currently playing at a peak, solos passionately on Katché’s melodies. Guest guitarist Jacob Young shades and colours a handful of pieces, while Kami Lyle adds innocent vocals to “Stay With You”. Recorded in the South of France in December 2009 and issued on the eve of a major European tour, “Third Round” is poised to be one of the season’s jazz hits. (ECM Records)

Manu Katché: Manu Katché (CD: ECM)Manu Katché: Manu Katché (CD: ECM)
Eponymously-titled album from Manu Katché. On his fourth ECM disc, Manu’s unique drumming sets the scene and direction, with compositions and arrangements radiating outward from its rhythm-patterns. His strongly propulsive yet relaxed groove is unlike any other drummer’s, and it lifts up the soloists. Personnel in the ever-changing Katché band currently includes Norwegians Nils Pettter Molvær and Tore Brunborg, first heard together on ECM in the band Masqualero in the 1980s: they still play most attractively together. British keyboardist Jim Watson also makes a strong showing with minimalistically-insistent as well as lyrical piano and thick, swirling organ. Recorded March 2012 in the South of France. Amancio D'Silva: Konkan Dance (CD: Vocalion)
Vocalion proudly presents the first ever release of guitar genius Amancio D’Silva’s 1974 album Konkan Dance. Goan-born D’Silva came to the UK in 1967 and recorded five albums for EMI’s legendary ‘Lansdowne’ jazz series, under the aegis of producer Denis Preston. However, the last of these and arguably the best – Konkan Dance – was for unknown reasons never released. Its exclusive licensing on CD to Vocalion by the Amancio D’Silva Estate enables the world to hear some of the most beguiling examples of D’Silva’s blend of jazz, rock and Indian music in pieces such as What Maria Sees, A Street in Bombay and A Song for Francesca. On these sessions Amancio is accompanied by an all-star line-up including Stan Tracey, Don Rendell, Alan Branscombe and Clem Alford. (Dutton Vocalion)

Egberto Gismonti & Nana Vasconcelos (CD: ECM Touchstones)
The partnership of Egberto Gismonti and Nana Vasconçelos brought new colours to improvised music on ECM. Sounds of the rainforest are conveyed in Nana’s percussion, and Egberto’s guitar, for all its sophistication, always retained an earthy directness.

Anouar Brahem: Souvenance (CD: ECM, 2 CDs)Anouar Brahem: Souvenance (CD: ECM, 2 CDs)
The music of 'Souvenance', by turns graceful, hypnotic, and taut and starkly dramatic, was recorded in 2014 - six years after oud-master Anouar Brahem's last ECM album, 'The Astounding Eyes of Rita' (1798628).

"It took a long time to write this music," he acknowledges, noting that his emotional world had been usurped by the unfolding story of political upheaval sweeping first through Tunisia then through the neighbouring countries. Extraordinary waves of change, accompanied by great hopes and fears. "I don't claim a direct link between my compositions and the events taking place in Tunisia," says Anouar, "but I have been deeply affected by them."

New directions for the music find pianist Fran?ois Couturier returning to the Brahem group, frequently supported by subtle string orchestration. The strings (the distinguished Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana) have a glowing transparency and fragility in these pieces, often providing shimmering texture against which the compelling contributions of the quartet members - and, above all, Anouar Brahem's unique oud-playing - stand out in bold relief. Anouar Brahem: Blue Maqams (CD: ECM)
Recorded in New York’s Avatar Studios in May 2017 and produced by Manfred Eicher, Blue Maqams brings Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem together with three brilliant improvisers. For Anouar Brahem and Dave Holland the album marks a reunion: they first collaborated 20 years ago on the very widely-acclaimed Thimar album. Brahem meets Jack DeJohnette for the first time here, but Holland and DeJohnette have been frequent musical partners over the last half-century beginning with ground-breaking work with Miles Davis – their collaborations are legendary. British pianist Django Bates also rises superbly to the challenge of Brahem’s compositions. And Anouar in turn is inspired to some of his most outgoing playing. (ECM Records)

Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos & Collin Walcott: The Codona Trilogy (CD: ECM, 3 CDs)
Pure wizardry. The art of the improvisers beyond all borders. Preaching equality for all the idioms, anticipating the gathering wave of “world music”, drawing on traditions from all the continents, Codona was like no other band. Its sound: simultaneously poetic and powerfully evocative and stamped, in every second, with character. Summoned into being by Collin Walcott in 1978, the trio provided an utterly original context for Don Cherry’s starkly melodic trumpet and for the multi-instrumentalism of all three players. This 3-CD box incorporates the albums “Codona” (recorded 1978), “Codona 2” (1980) and “Codona 3” (1982). (ECM Records)

A year after his impressionistic, critically-lauded ECM debut Into The Silence, trumpeter Avishai Cohen’s Cross My Palm With Silver introduces a programme of new pieces which put the focus on the ensemble, on teamwork, with a quartet of the highest calibre. The adroit, almost telepathic interplay among the musicians allows Avishai Cohen to soar, making it clear why he is one of the most talked-about jazz musicians on the contemporary scene. “All of these people together are my dream team”, says the charismatic trumpeter of fellow players Yonathan Avishai, Barak Mori and Nasheet Waits, who share his sense for daring improvisation and his feeling for structure. “I feel we’re in a perfect place with the balance. It’s open and there’s so much room for the improvisation to take the music any place we can. At the same time the composition is very specific and the vibe is very direct and thought about.” As with Into The Silence, Cross My Palm With Silver was produced by Manfred Eicher at Studios La Buissonne in the south of France.
