John Mayer: Etudes/ Radha Krishna (CD: First Hand)John Mayer: Etudes/ Radha Krishna (CD: First Hand)
John Mayer's success through the 1960's with Indo-Jazz Fusions saw the release of four LP's over a four year period. Indo-Jazz Suite (1966), Indo-Jazz Fusions (1967) ,Indo-Jazz Fusions II (1968), and Etudes (1969), Sonet SNT603 which is the only LP not to have been re-released until now.

Two groundbreaking LPs on one CD, wonderfully remastered at Abbey Road Studios - Both albums appear on CD for the first time. “Etudes” was the last Indo-Jazz Fusions release with the old personnel. Four more albums were released between 1993 and 2000 with different band members.

“Radha Krishna”, which combines Indian modes with a strong classical Western influence, was originally released by EMI in 1971. Comprising of a large ensemble, including sitar, tabla, drums, sax, string trio, soprano, tenor etc... and featuring inspired solos from Tony Coe, Chris Taylor and Clem Alford. (Discovery Records)

Manu Katché: Neighbourhood (CD: ECM)Manu Katché: Neighbourhood (CD: ECM)
Manu Katché’s first leader date for ECM finds him fronting a remarkable band, assembled by producer Manfred Eicher, which brings the French-African drummer together with Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko. Two of Stanko’s gifted young associates, pianist Marcin Wasilewski and bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, complete an ensemble which plays Manu’s music with enormous assurance, as if they’ve been playing together for years. (ECM Records)

Manu Katché: Playground (CD: ECM)
Eagerly awaited second ECM album by French-African drummer Manu Katché. Recorded in New York’s Avatar Studio in January 2007, “Playground” picks up where the best-selling “Neighbourhood” left off: in the interim the project has coalesced into a rip-roaring and fully-integrated band. Manu’s group, featuring a Polish/Norwegian confederacy of young players, is energized by his hard driving drums and by his compositions which invite spirited solos... Together, the quintet - whose strong new frontline features Mathias Eick and Trygve Seim - makes exciting, zestful music. (ECM Records)

Manu Katché: Third Round (CD: ECM)Manu Katché: Third Round (CD: ECM)
Intensified commitment to the French-African drummer’s programme of “beautifully mutated grooves and jazzy themes” (to quote The Guardian) distinguishes Manu Katché’s third ECM album. Inside an all-new line-up, bassist Pino Palladino nonchalantly reinforces the groove element – he and Katché have much shared history as sessioneers – and helps the pulses of Manu’s tunes to dance. Pianist Rebello has both delicacy of touch and energy to burn, and saxophonist Brunborg, currently playing at a peak, solos passionately on Katché’s melodies. Guest guitarist Jacob Young shades and colours a handful of pieces, while Kami Lyle adds innocent vocals to “Stay With You”. Recorded in the South of France in December 2009 and issued on the eve of a major European tour, “Third Round” is poised to be one of the season’s jazz hits. (ECM Records)

Gilad Atzmon: In Loving Memory Of America (CD: Tiptoe/ Enja)
Gilad Atzmon pays homage to one of the best-selling yet most controversial albums in jazz history -

“Charlie Parker with Strings”

Not one to shy from controversy himself, Gilad Atzmon is now one of the leading characters (and one of the best-selling artists) in the UK jazz scene, and certainly one of the most outspoken. He views this new work as both a tribute to the great jazz musicians of America and also as an indictment

of America itself. His usual band the Orient House Ensemble (Frank Harrison on piano and Fender Rhodes, Yaron Stavi on bass and Asaf Sirkis on drums) are joined by the Sigamos String Quartet (Ros Stephen and Emil Chakalov - violins, Rachel Robson -viola, Daisy Vatalaro - cello). The album was recorded in London in August 2008. (Harmonia Mundi)

Egberto Gismonti & Nana Vasconcelos (CD: ECM Touchstones)Egberto Gismonti & Nana Vasconcelos (CD: ECM Touchstones)
The partnership of Egberto Gismonti and Nana Vasconçelos brought new colours to improvised music on ECM. Sounds of the rainforest are conveyed in Nana’s percussion, and Egberto’s guitar, for all its sophistication, always retained an earthy directness.

Collin Walcott: Cloud Dance (CD: ECM Touchstones)Collin Walcott: Cloud Dance (CD: ECM Touchstones)
Collin Walcott defined a corner of improvisation all his own with his unique approach to the sitar and tabla. When the newly-formed Gateway trio of John Abercrombie, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette joined him for “Cloud Dance” the results were magical.

Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos & Collin Walcott: The Codona Trilogy (CD: ECM, 3 CDs)
Pure wizardry. The art of the improvisers beyond all borders. Preaching equality for all the idioms, anticipating the gathering wave of “world music”, drawing on traditions from all the continents, Codona was like no other band. Its sound: simultaneously poetic and powerfully evocative and stamped, in every second, with character. Summoned into being by Collin Walcott in 1978, the trio provided an utterly original context for Don Cherry’s starkly melodic trumpet and for the multi-instrumentalism of all three players. This 3-CD box incorporates the albums “Codona” (recorded 1978), “Codona 2” (1980) and “Codona 3” (1982). (ECM Records)
