Gary Burton & Chick Corea: Crystal Silence (CD: ECM Touchstones)
Crystal Silence launched one of jazz’s most long-lasting small groups, whose history would extend over more than 40 years. On this 1972 recording Gary Burton and Chick Corea, brought together by producer Manfred Eicher, raised the bar for the art of the duo. As Billboard perceptively noted, “The lyrical qualities of both men are displayed to maximum advantage, while the material at hand includes some of Corea’s most durable compositions. Recorded in Oslo, the album may prove a classic, for its revelation of the more delicate, contemplative strengths of these men.” (ECM Records)

The Corea/Burton duo was brought together by producer Manfred Eicher, and Crystal Silence (recorded in 1972) brought a new chamber music sensibility into jazz improvisation, distinguished by an effervescence of melody and countermelody, with synchronized cascades of sound in continually changing harmonic movement.

"It becomes a little magical," said Corea. Stereo: "Crystal Silence is an album of extraordinary musicianship and rare beauty. Rarely have two musicians been so perfectly matched and rarely do we hear an album of such consistent excellence and originality." This LP re-issue on 180g vinyl comes with a free download code. Gary Burton: The New Quartet (CD: ECM Touchstones)
As well as being the great vibes innovator of the era, Gary Burton has been a most astute talent scout. In 1973, The New Quartet introduced Abraham Laboriel: this was the first recording of the bassist who would shortly become one of the most in-demand session players across all genres. “It must be emphasised that Laboriel sounds like a major artist in the making with his astonishing bass work,” wrote Melody Maker. Guitarist Mick Goodrick also emerged as a player to watch with this album, shining in a well-conceived programme with compositions of Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Carla Bley, Mike Gibbs and bandleader Burton.
