The Bebop Shop : Current Events: New Jazz and Beyond : Hiromi
'Another Mind', offers a glimpse into the highly creative inner world of a gifted young pianist whose roots are in jazz but whose potential is unlimited. An ambitious and engaging debut, it makes frequent forays into R&B and avant-garde with interludes of high-speed and high-energy freeform.
Hiromi is supported by a fine team of musicians that includes her own backup unit of bassist Mitch Cohn and drummer Dave Di Censo, as well as three formidable guest players: bassist Anthony Jackson, alto saxophonist Jim Odgren and guitarist Dave Fiuczynski. It was produced by Ahmad Jamal and Richard Evans. (Proper Music) Price: £13.99
Over the course of nine expressively charged songs, the listener is carried away on an impassioned spiritual journey that might tell the story of a personal discovery, a love affair, or the creation of the music itself. The pianist finds her own spark in her interaction with her trio mates of the last five years, bass guitarist Anthony Jackson (Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Chick Corea, The O'Jays) and drummer Simon Phillips (The Who, David Gilmour, Judas Priest, Toto, Jack Bruce). (Proper Music) Price: £13.99
Like all creative artists, Hiromi is expanding her horizons and one such way is by touring with Edmar Castenada, an extremely talented and unique harpist. This project captured an incredible performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival in June 2017 that needs to be heard to be believed.
Ever since the 2003 release of her debut Telarc album, 'Another Mind', Hiromi has electrified audiences and critics east and west, with a creative energy that encompasses and eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop parameters, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. Most recently, she has had a string of successful albums with the trio of Anthony Jackson on bass and Simon Phillips on drums. (Proper Music) Price: £13.99
