Jan Garbarek Quartet: Afric Pepperbird (CD: ECM)Jan Garbarek Quartet: Afric Pepperbird (CD: ECM)

Jan Garbarek: Afric Pepperbird (Vinyl LP: ECM)
Luminessence, ECM's new audiophile vinyl-reissue series, is a kaleidoscope, shedding light on the jewels of the label's deep catalogue in elegant, high-quality editions - audiophile vinyl pressing, high-grade tip-on gatefold sleeves that include new liner notes. Recorded in Oslo in September 1970, Afric Pepperbird was released on New Year's Day in 1971. Half a century later, it still conveys the freshness and excitement of discoveries being made. The album signalled the arrival of four Norwegian improvisers - Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen - at the fledgling ECM label. It was the start of a lifelong association with each of the musicians, whose influence was soon to reach far beyond the borders of their homeland.

In extended passages on Afric Pepperbird, with Christensen and Andersen stretching out, it's quite often Rypdal effectively holding the centre with taut chords. Everybody is roaring here, with Garbarek deep into his free jazz vocabulary. "Garbarek should be heard," wrote reviewer Joe Klee in DownBeat. "I would venture that not since Django Reinhardt has there been a European jazz musician so original and forward-looking as this young Norwegian." (Proper Music)

Art Lande & Jan Garbarek: Red Lanta (CD: ECM Touchstones)
The album title is anagram of Art Lande, the idiosyncratic US pianist making his ECM debut in a set of his own tunes, very ably partnered by Jan Garbarek on a recording described by Down Beat as “one of the finest albums ECM has yet released…It is the interplay of the two artists that elicits the full richness of the music. Lande and Garbarek have intelligently channelled their virtuosity, forging a uniquely inspired vision. The result is enthralling.” Recorded 1973. (ECM Records)

Jan Garbarek & Bobo Stenson Quartet: Witchi-Tai-To (CD: ECM Touchstones)Jan Garbarek & Bobo Stenson Quartet: Witchi-Tai-To (CD: ECM Touchstones)
In the mid-1970s there was no European jazz group more popular than the Garbarek-Stenson Quartet, and Witchi-Tai-To was voted ‘Record of the Year 1974/75’ in Jazz Forum’s poll. Down Beat gave the album a five-star review: “Those who think that contemporary music from Europe lacks soul-fire are hereby advised to listen to Witchi-Tai-To.” Bobo Stenson: “The quartet had a chemistry that I’ve very rarely known, and I look back at the whole period as a happy and creative time.” The wide-open programme includes tunes by Carla Bley and Don Cherry as well as the title track composed by Jim Pepper. Jan Garbarek: Dansere (CD: ECM, 3 CDs)
A welcome return to the ECM catalog for three of the most striking of the early recordings which Jan Garbarek made for the label in the 1970s. In different but related ways Sart (1971), Witchi-Tai-To (1973) and Dansere (1975) brought freshly intelligent and invigorating perspective to bear on questions of dynamics, group sound, interaction and swing, the relation of improvisation and abstraction to the roots of jazz, and the relevance of archetypal yet freshly inflected folk forms to contemporary music. Two ensembles are heard here – Garbarek/Stenson/Rypdal/Andersen/Christensen on the exploratory Sart, and the spirited Jan Garbarek-Bobo Stenson Quartet, one of the most exciting groups of the era. Recorded in a Stockholm church in 1979, Aftenland documents a fascinating encounter between Jan Garbarek, improviser par excellence, and classical organist Kjell Johnsen. “Preparing and realizing Aftenland was one of the most interesting experiences in my entire career,” Johnsen has said. “A major artistic achievement”, wrote Contemporary Keyboard. Jan Garbarek, Egberto Gismonti & Charlie Haden: Magico - Carta de Amor (CD: ECM, 2 CDs)Jan Garbarek, Egberto Gismonti & Charlie Haden: Magico - Carta de Amor (CD: ECM, 2 CDs)
A fascinating set from three strong and contrasting musical personalities: Norwegian saxophonist, Brazilian guitarist-pianist, and US bassist making purposeful and creative music together on this previously unreleased live recording. “Carta de Amor” documents music captured at Munich’s Amerika Haus in April, 1981. Two years on from the much-loved albums “Magico” (ECM 1151) and “Folk Songs” (ECM 1170), the trio’s improvisational empathy and sensibilities were further honed by experiences as a touring group. Repertoire includes five pieces from Gismonti’s pen, with the title track heard in two variations, opening and closing this enthralling double album. Also heard here are Garbarek’s folk song arrangements and an extended, freewheeling version of his composition “Spor”. Charlie Haden brings in “La Pasionaria”, from the repertoire of the Liberation Music Orchestra and “All That Is Beautiful”, not previously documented on disc. Recorded by Manfred Eicher and Martin Wieland in 1981, mixed from original analog tapes by Eicher and Jan Erik Kongshaug. (ECM Records)

One of the Norwegian saxophonists most outgoing dates, the best-selling “Runes” also marked the first appearance of Manu Katché with the Garbarek group. Centerpiece of the album is the five-part “Molde Canticle”.

This album is part of the ECM TOUCHSTONES series: Great music and full-dimensional sound at download price, in cardboard covers with original artwork. (ECM Records)

Jan Garbarek: In Praise Of Dreams (CD: ECM)Jan Garbarek: In Praise Of Dreams (CD: ECM)
“In Praise of Dreams” – Jan Garbarek’s first new album in six years - features two musicians with whom the great Norwegian saxophonist shares some history – American-Armenian violist Kim Kashkashian and African-French drummer Manu Katché. Garbarek, Kashkashian and Katché span a lot of idioms between them, but the music sings with a focussed sense of purpose, in the context that Jan has shaped for it. If dreams are movies for the mind, the album is aptly titled - its atmospheres are evocative and decidedly ‘filmic’. (ECM Records)

Jan Garbarek: Dresden- In Concert (CD: ECM, 2 CDs)Jan Garbarek: Dresden- In Concert (CD: ECM, 2 CDs)
This one is very eagerly-awaited: it has been six years since Jan Garbarek’s last album as a leader (“In Praise of Dreams”). And, moreover, this double-album – recorded in Dresden’s Alter Schlachthof in October 2007 – is also the first-ever live set from the highly-popular Garbarek Group. The band, now including Brazilian bassist Yuri Daniel, powers through repertoire old and new, and the Norwegian saxophonist is in top form, his exchanges with Manu Katche’s bold, emphatic drums particularly exciting. Material includes “12 Moons”, “There Were Swallows”, “Voy Cantando”, an ecstatic version of “Paper Nut” (last heard on Shankar’s “Song for Everyone”) and much more. Released in time for Jan’s extensive autumn tour. (ECM Records)
