Louis Hayes: Crisis (CD: Savant)Louis Hayes: Crisis (CD: Savant)
Detroit-born jazz drummer Louis Hayes arrived in New York when he was 19 to join the Horace Silver ensemble, making his recording debut with the pianist on 'Six Pieces of Silver', the following year. Over the next 60 years Hayes amassed a staggeringly great body of work, playing and recording with Cannonball Adderley, Oscar Peterson, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Cedar Walton, Sonny Rollins, Woody Shaw and many more of the giants of modern music.

Continuing this legacy of excellence with this Savant recording, Hayes pays tribute to some of his jazz colleagues past and present with a set-list featuring works by Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Farrell, vibraphonist Steve Nelson and bassist Dezron Douglas along with one of his own original compositions. With David Hazeltine at the piano rounding out the all-star rhythm section and the acclaimed saxophonist Abraham Burton leading the charge out in front, the band alternately caress and careen through their material with tasteful arrangements and memorable solos. Also on hand is the multi-instrumentalist and composer Camille Thurman displaying her vocal prowess on two tracks. (Proper Music)

Larry Willis: I Fall In Love Too Easily (CD: Highnote)
It may be somewhat ironic, yet ultimately fitting that this, the final recording by Larry Willis, brought the veteran pianist/composer right back to the Rudy Van Gelder Studio where he first began his impressive career as recording artist that spanned over a period of six decades.

The Harlem, New York born Willis first entered the hallowed halls of Rudy Van Gelder's legendary Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey studio as a twenty-two year old graduate of the Manhattan School of Music on January 29, 1965 to record with Jackie McLean for Blue Note Records. Willis's expansive resume includes entries with the likes of Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Stan Getz, Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band, Clifford Jordan, Carmen McRae, David "Fathead" Newman, Woody Shaw, and many more. He appeared on hundreds of albums as a sideman and dozens more as a leader of his own impressive bands.

The music played here with long-time friends Victor Lewis and Joe Ford, and his relatively new colleague Jeremy Pelt shows Larry Willis displaying the intense creativity and impeccable taste which made him one of the most respected keyboard artists in jazz. (Proper Music)

Harold Mabern: The Iron Man - Live At Smoke (CD: Smoke Sessions, 2 CDs)
While it was captured over the course a single night, there’s a rich lifetime’s worth of music packed into The Iron Man: Live at Smoke. If it’s a slight overstatement to say that the album represents an autobiography in song, that’s only because 82-year-old jazz master Harold Mabern tells his story in every note that he plays. That’s as true of the melodies he’s been interpreting for more then half a century - as many of the tunes on The Iron Man are - as it is of the always inspired music that flows spontaneously from the great pianist’s fingers.

The Iron Man: Live at Smoke was recorded on the final night of a remarkable three-week residency, an annual holiday tradition at the renowned New York City club. Most of that 2017/18 run was dedicated to the music of John Coltrane and featured a host of invited guests to the bandstand. For this magical final performance, however, Mabern and his gifted, longstanding quartet - tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth - went it alone, vigorously swinging through well-loved tunes from throughout Mabern’s storied career. Harold Mabern: Afro Blue (CD: Smoke Sessions)Harold Mabern: Afro Blue (CD: Smoke Sessions)
Harold Mabern's second release on Smoke Sessions Records, Afro Blue, is a very special recording featuring guest vocalists Gregory Porter, Norah Jones, Jane Monheit, Kurt Elling, and Alexis Cole. The chemistry of these artists with Harold—the sound of his piano voicings combined with their voices—is extraordinary. Well-known in jazz circles as a consummate accompanist for instrumental soloists, The Mabe also has a special gift for sensitive and supportive playing behind singers. It’s something he takes pride in and has been doing since he first hit the stage at Birdland half a century ago with Betty Carter. (Smoke Sessions)

Harold Mabern: Mabern Plays Mabern (CD: Smoke Sessions)
"Mabern Plays Mabern" is pianist Harold Mabern at his absolute best--playing his favorite original compositions with a sextet of close friends and associates in front of a live audience at Smoke Jazz Club in New York City. Mabern is joined by tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, trombonist Steve Davis, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth on an energetic and romp through his catalog. The music on this release is now more highly anticipated and important to Mabern's fans as he passed away suddenly in September 2019. Nat Chinen of WBGO described him then as "a pianist of percussive fire and boundless soul, with a language that pulled from hard bop, post-bop, Memphis soul and the blues." (Proper Music)

Jeremy Pelt: Jeremy Pelt, The Artist (CD: Highnote)Jeremy Pelt: Jeremy Pelt, The Artist (CD: Highnote)
Composing music inspired by painting dates back as far as the 12th century (Hildegard of Bingen) and, in Jazz, Duke Ellington's "Degas Suite" comes to mind along with Branford Marsalis's "Romare Bearden Revealed." But on his new album, Jeremy Pelt may be the first jazz artist to examine the relationship between music and sculpture. The five-movement "Rodin Suite" muses not only on works the French sculptor August Rodin left us, but how his art might have evolved if he were still with us today. Added to Victor Gould, Vicente Archer and a few other of his "regs," Pelt has added the guitar of Alex Wintz, the vibes and marimba of Chien Chien Lu and the exotic percussion of Ismel Wignall for an ensemble sound capable of delicacy and color as well as full-on modern jazz shouts. A thoughtful and thought-provoking recording from, you guessed it, Jeremy Pelt, the artist. (Proper Music)

Jeremy Pelt: Noir En Rouge - Live In Paris (CD: Highnote)
Recorded live in Paris at the famed Sunside / Sunset Jazz Club, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and his colleagues deliver a set of searing intensity and unparalleled musicianship.

Pelt's group is that rarest of all things in jazz, a working band, and the communication that comes from extensive time spent playing together is evident. All the players are among the foremost 30-something neo-bop players in jazz today giving the group an all-star-type reputation with a well-rehearsed sound that comes only with familiarity and countless gigs.

Pelt's own playing has earned accolades for his staggering virtuosity, which has elicited comparisons to trumpet icons like Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, as well as for his studious, cerebral approach to the music. On this particular night in Paris, Pelt focused all his attention on creating the perfect phrase to fit each musical moment, sculpting long lines that let the music breathe and while building spontaneous ideas into finely-crafted miniatures.(Proper Music)

Jeremy Pelt: The Art Of Intimacy, Vol.1 (CD: Highnote)Jeremy Pelt: The Art Of Intimacy, Vol.1 (CD: Highnote)
Jeremy Pelt's unquenchable curiosity has made him one of the most multi-faceted of jazz artists. Whether it be as a leader, a sideman, an accompanist or a composer, Pelt has investigated nearly every aspect and genre in jazz - from electric to eclectic, from Be-Bop to Free-Bop. Here Pelt joins forces with the legendary George Cables on piano and Peter Washington laying down the bass lines.

All but one tune on the setlist are slow numbers but this is not your father's ballad record. Each member of the trio is able to pour some old wine into new bottles, aware of and perhaps shaped by the past but operating very much in the moment. Together with Cables' lush voicings and solid tone and Washinton's always-inspired bass lines and solos, Pelt's new recording sets a high bar for all trio recordings that follow in the remainder of 2020. Richie Beirach: Inborn (CD: Jazzline, 2 CDs)
This all-star combo was assembled under the leadership of pianist Richie Beirach (born 1947), it included the Brecker Brothers - the late tenor saxophonist Michael and the trumpeter Randy, the guitarist John Scofield, bassist George Mraz and the drummer Adam Nussbaum. At the time of recording all six of them were internationally recognised names in jazz, with the Brecker Brothers, who were fast becoming "superstars" of modern jazz, leading the way.

The setting for the recording was quite exceptional and is worth mentioning. On the first day of their recording session in mid-April of 1989 the six jazz musicians performed the pieces highly focused and without disturbance at the Clinton Studios in New York. However, on the second day they invited friends and acquaintances and played some of the same pieces as the day before, but now under more difficult conditions, live on stage in front of an audience. The result is a double album of historical significance for the world of jazz. A must-have for your collection! (Proper Music)

George Adams: Sound Suggestions (CD: ECM Touchstones)
George Adams made only one ECM recording, but it’s a beauty, placing his powerful tenor sax at the front of a talent-packed group, with Adams, Kenny Wheeler and Heinz Sauer all contributing compositions to the programme. “The spirit of Mingus hovers watchfully nearby; Adams is an original, though. His solos roil beneath the restraints of bebop structure, then sail wildly through the roof with a committed passion,” wrote Chicago Magazine. The tenor exchanges between Adams and Heinz Sauer are exciting, and George also delivers a very spirited vocal on “Got Something Good For You.” Recorded 1979. (ECM Records)

Steve Coleman & The Council Of Balance: Synovial Joints (CD: Pi Recordings)Steve Coleman & The Council Of Balance: Synovial Joints (CD: Pi Recordings)
Composer and alto saxophonist Steve Coleman is widely considered to be among the most influential artists in jazz. He was recipient in 2014 of three prestigious awards: a MacArthur Fellowship, Guggenheim Fellowship and Doris Duke Performing Artist Grant. This comes at a time when Coleman is at a creative peak, incorporating a lifetime of research into African diasporic culture and cycles found in nature and astronomy into his musical methods. His influence among young artists, particularly in his approach to rhythm, has never been stronger.

Synovial Joints is the most ambitious project in Coleman s 30-year career as a bandleader. The music is written for 21 musicians, encompassing his core Five Elements group, augmented by musicians from jazz, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian and contemporary classical circles. The music was based on ideas that reflect the processes, functions and rhythms of the human body - to model individual elements of the musical composition on the physiological movements within the nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, endocrine, and exocrine systems. The overall musical structure of the composition is held together based on the musculoskeletal system, hence the title. (Harmonia Mundi)

As on each of Saxophone Summits aforementioned albums, pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Billy Hart form an extraordinarily sensitive rhythm section that at once propels, coheres and complements the inspired flow of the three saxophonists, each an instantly recognizable voice. Saxophone maestro Joe Lovano has enjoyed a stellar career recording for Blue Note Records, launching into new territory with different sized ensembles from album to album while rarely retreading the steps of his past musical adventures. Whether he’s been in a trio fascination, a quartet marvel, or a killer nonet setting, Lovano has upped the ante with each album, not only furthering his reputation as one of the world’s premiere saxophonists but also forwarding jazz expression with imaginative might.

With his 20th album for Blue Note, Lovano delivers a milestone recording with Symphonica, a bold and beautiful orchestral project recorded largely in concert with the WDR Radio Big Band and Orchestra from Cologne, Germany. With music arranged and conducted by the big band musical director, Michael Abene, Symphonica marks the first time in Lovano’s career that he has recorded an entire album with a full symphony. All of the music consists of Lovano compositions save for one piece (Charles Mingus’s “Duke Ellington’s Sound of Love,” where Lovano sustains his tenor saxophone lines to hover over the haunting melody). In that sense, Symphonica stands as a full-sound, best-of collection that traces the breadth and plumbs the depth of Lovano’s career. (Blue Note Records)

Joe Lovano: Trio Tapestry (CD: ECM)
The great saxophonist Joe Lovano has appeared on a number of ECM recordings over the last four decades, including much-loved albums with Paul Motian, Steve Kuhn and John Abercrombie. Trio Tapestry is his first as a leader for the label, introducing a wonderful new group and music of flowing lyricism, delicate texture, and inspired interplay. Lovano and pianist Marilyn Crispell are in accord at an advanced level inside its structures. “Marilyn has such a beautiful sound and touch and vocabulary,” Joe enthuses. Drummer Carmen Castaldi, a Lovano associate of long-standing, also responds to the trio environment with sensitivity, subtly embellishing and detailing the pieces. Lovano: “We play together like an orchestra, creating an amazing tapestry. I brought in the material, but there’s an equal weight of contribution, creating music within the music, and harmonizing it in a really special way.” Trio Tapestry was recorded at New York’s Sear Sound studio in March 2018, and produced by Manfred Eicher. Joe Lovano, Marilyn Crispell & Carmen Castaldi: Garden Of Expression (CD: ECM)Joe Lovano, Marilyn Crispell & Carmen Castaldi: Garden Of Expression (CD: ECM)
The debut album of Joe Lovano’s Trio Tapestry was one of 2019’s most talked-about releases. The trio’s musical concept – the Boston Globe spoke of “utterances of hushed assurance, lyricism and suspense” - is taken to the next level on its second album, Garden of Expression, a recording distinguished by its intense focus. Lovano, a saxophonist whose reach extends across the history of modern jazz and beyond, plays with exceptional sensitivity in Trio Tapestry. And the music he writes for this group - tenderly melodic or declamatory, harmonically open, rhythmically free, and spiritually involving - encourages subtle and differentiated responses from his creative partners. Joe describes their interaction as “magical”. Carmen Castaldi’s space-conscious approach to drumming further refines an improvisational understanding that he and Lovano have shared since the 1970s. The trio is also a wonderful context for Marilyn Crispell’s solos, counter melodies, and improvisational embellishments, and her feeling for sound-colour helps the chamber music character of the group to flower. The details of the music are beautifully realized in this recording made in the highly responsive acoustics of the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in Lugano and produced by Manfred Eicher. (ECM Records)

Joe Lovano, Marilyn Crispell & Carmen Castaldi: Our Daily Bread (CD: ECM)
The third album from Joe Lovano’s Trio Tapestry finds the group continuing to extend its spacious and lyrical approach, with deep listening and intense focus. “Our Daily Bread is fueled by the rhythm spirit of expression that projects the mysterious world of music that lies ahead,” says master saxophonist Lovano in his liner note and these elegantly fluid pieces and free-floating ballads indeed feel like songs of the soul.

Joe Locke: Love Is A Pendulum (CD: Motema)
Inspired by a poem by Barbara Sfraga, 'Love Is A Pendulum' is the most personal, most compositional and most emotive work of Locke's career and features a hand-picked cast of outstanding musicians that bring his vision to life in spectacular fashion: special guests Rosario Giuliani, Donny McCaslin (saxophones), Paul Bollenback (guitar), Victor Provost (steel pan) and Theo Bleckmann (voice), with Locke's core working quartet, featuring Robert Rodriguez (piano), Terreon Gully (drums and co-producer) and Ricardo Rodriguez (basses).

Locke comments in the liner notes about the musicians featured on the album : "as tightly composed as much of this music is, it would not have risen off the page without the creative contributions of the musicians here." Just over an hour in length, the album has taken a lifetime to make, as it encompasses all of Locke's joys and sorrows, and utilises all of his slings and arrows. (Proper Music)

It has been said that it was Earl Hines who freed the piano from the bass - chord, bass - chord left hand of his stride predecessors and became the first 'modern' jazz pianist. Who better to pay tribute to this pivotal musician than John Hicks, one of the preeminent keyboard artists in jazz today. At this stage in his career, John Hicks is not only producing his finest work but is doing so in such a consistent manner both in studio and in concert. Hick's usage of Hines' accomplishments as a point of departure is captured exquisitely throughout his new recording, which represents another stepping stone in an already well documented career. Peter Erskine Trio: As It Was (CD: ECM, 4 CDs)Peter Erskine Trio: As It Was (CD: ECM, 4 CDs)
The newest addition to ECM's popular Old and New Masters Series is a box set reprising the four albums made by Peter Erskine's American-British-Swedish trio with John Taylor and Palle Danielsson between 1992 and 1997: You Never Know, As It Is, Time Being and Juni.

If its core concept - a piano trio led by a drummer - was unorthodox, the group was nonetheless influential, and the recordings provide an excellent environment for appreciating the distinctive writing and playing of the late John Taylor. The British pianist was the Erskine Trio's primary composer, with the drummer-leader and bassist Danielsson also contributing pieces and the repertoire topped up with tunes by Vince Mendoza and Kenny Wheeler as well as Cole Porter, Peter Warlock, William Walton and others.

Of his trio mates Erskine says, "We drew out our most explorative and interesting playing from each other. Without trying to be, we were a truly unique group. I've heard nothing like it before or since." (Proper Music)

Peter Erskine Trio: Juni (CD: ECM Touchstones)
Recorded in 1997, Juni was the fourth and final ECM album of the Peter Erskine Trio. A piano trio led by a drummer was an unusual proposal and one that initially surprised listeners who had followed Erskine through louder adventures with Weather Report and the Stan Kenton Big Band. But this alliance with pianist John Taylor, the trio’s primary composer, and bassist Palle Danielsson soon found its own following. Down Beat described the music as “Zen-like” implying that much of its power resided in the not-played. “If such a thing as virtuosic understatement is possible, Peter Erskine's band makes it real,” the Ottawa Citizen agreed. Ralph Alessi & Fred Hersch: Only Many (CD: Cam Jazz)Ralph Alessi & Fred Hersch: Only Many (CD: Cam Jazz)
The second work by Ralph Alessi on CAM Jazz, after the successful debut of “Cognitive Dissonance”. This time the trumpet player shares the honor of appearing on the cover with Fred Hersch, a pianist of great class, who is in perfect accord with his partner in adventure. “Only Many” is prevalently a CD for four hands, proof of the great complicity created in the studio at the time of the recording.

The brief, intense introduction, “Ride”, seems to be almost a warning to the listener, a call to concentrate on what will happen during the 60 minutes of the album. The velvety “Hands”, composed by Alessi alone, is the prelude to one of the two “cover” pieces on the CD, the wonderful “San Francisco Holiday” by a Thelonious Monk, who can never be mentioned and reinterpreted enough. We have to wait until almost the end of “Only Many” to hear the other virtual guest, Paul Motian, with “Blue Midnight”. (Cam Jazz)

Ralph Alessi, Kris Davis & Steve Davis: Sugar Blade (CD: Babel)
Sugar Blade is the result of five hours of freedom in a Brooklyn studio - a crucible of invention where three disparate voices combine in the moment to create cohesive musical statements.

Listen to how the opening track, 'Let's Go Knitting,' combines Kris Davis's fidgety, nervous piano with Alessi's aloof trumpet commentary, riding an information-rich undertow of dense snare work, with Stephen Davis throwing out swift blurs and trills and punctuating rim-shots. Or how, in 'Broken Light,' a plangent trumpet calls out across a throbbing piano pulse while the drums imply a groove that never quite fully manifests. Or how, in 'Red Velvet Bun/I Want You Back,' a hint of swing in the cymbals combines with a prim and strident horn and ominous, low piano rumblings to build an unlikely and counter-intuitive toe-tapper.

As Stephen Davis suggests, these are pieces that continually toy with the border where improvisation and composition meet, creating compositions that zing with freshness and spontaneity, and improvisations that follow unbreakable rules of logic. Only in the sprightly groove of 'Cemetary Sleep' do we hear a hint of playful regimentation, with trumpet and piano locked into a tight unison hook over spiky drums. You can almost hear the trio smiling. (Proper Music)

Ralph Alessi Quartet: It's Always Now (CD: ECM)Ralph Alessi Quartet: It's Always Now (CD: ECM)
Ralph Alessi’s fourth appearance as a leader for the label follows a singular album run that’s been met with nothing but praise from The New York Times to The Guardian. The latter lauded Ralph’s previous recording Imaginary Friends (2019) for its “elegant balance of poignant, playful original compositions and gracefully probing improv” and declared it “his best album yet”. It’s Always Now however brims with arguments that there is a new contender for that title. On his new album, Alessi’s unique tone is as limber, piercing and present as ever, enveloped by a fresh quartet line-up – pianist Florian Weber, Bänz Oester on bass and drummer Gerry Hemingway – that navigates through the trumpeter’s idiosyncratically swinging compositions with a sixth sense. The album is not only a continuation of the leader’s work but also records Florian’s evolution on the label, this being his fourth album with ECM to date. His distinctive harmonic approach on keys is as evident in leader settings as in the role of a sideman, and his deep sensibility for Alessi’s pulse enhances this session, which was produced by Manfred Eicher. Renee Rosnes: Written In The Rocks (CD: Smoke Sessions)Renee Rosnes: Written In The Rocks (CD: Smoke Sessions)
Pianist/composer Renee Rosnes takes an intimate look at the wondrous sweep of the natural world on Written In The Rocks, her new album built around an ambitious new suite inspired by the evolution of life on Earth. A sense of discovery lies at the core of “The Galapagos Suite,” which makes up the bulk of the recording and is named for the island chain that inspired Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Discovery is also a key element of the music created by Rosnes and her bandmates. Saxophonist and flutist Steve Wilson, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Bill Stewart excavate the riches and mysteries from the pianist’s gorgeous, densely layered compositions. “All of us have personal and musical relationships that have been growing for decades,” Rosnes says. “As a band, we’ve developed a focused sound with a wide and nuanced palette of colors and rhythms. We play off of each other.” (Harmonia Mundi)

David Liebman: Lieb Plays The Blues A La Trane (CD: Daybreak)David Liebman: Lieb Plays The Blues A La Trane (CD: Daybreak)
This is the latest CD from one of today’s leading saxophonists and focuses on the music of one of his major influences, John Coltrane. With a few exceptions David Liebman has largely avoided covering Coltrane tunes in recent times so his fresh take on the repertoire is all the more memorable for this. Of additional interest is that it’s an all blues programme including three of Trane’s own compositions together with one each by Miles Davis and Duke Ellington. (Proper Note)

Dave Liebman & Richie Beirach: Balladscapes (CD: Intuition)
Two real jazz legends - saxophonist Dave Liebman and pianist Richie Beirach - join forces in this duet, playing ballads in the smallest possible band constellation.

Over the years, these two have used ballads in their performances and recordings, but this is the first all-ballad album they've done. And it's quite unusual in its approach. The program offers some originals (new and old), but includes far-ranging material from Bach, Weill, Jobim, Strayhorn, Shorter and Coltrane. Beirach and Liebman take fewer liberties with the material that one might expect and the music is better off for that restraint. This is a gorgeous, mesmerising chamber music recital. And like all great music, it bears fruit with every repeated listening. (Proper Music)

Dave Liebman & Joe Lovano: Compassion - The Music of John Coltrane (CD: Resonance)Dave Liebman & Joe Lovano: Compassion - The Music of John Coltrane (CD: Resonance)
Now approaching the 50th anniversary of Coltrane's passing, 'Compassion' is a fitting tribute to his legacy. Featuring an all-star band of long-time collaborators led by jazz legends Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart.

In spring of 2007, saxophonist Dave Liebman was contacted by the BBC asking to arrange a recording date commemorating the 40th anniversary of John Coltrane's passing. Due to prior commitments, he could not get the whole Saxophone Summit group together, but with Summit-mates Joe Lovano, Billy Hart and Phil Markowitz, supported by bassist Ron McClure they were able to do a recording session.

Coltrane compositions recorded cover the various periods of Trane's life with the early period represented by the altered blues "Locomotion," mid period ethnic-influenced "Olé" and "Equinox." The later years represented by the rarely heard "Reverend King" and "Compassion" from the epic Meditations album. With Joe Lovano featured on flute, tenor, aulachrome (a new saxophone innovation) and alto flute, along with Dave Liebman on soprano and flutes, the music explores Coltrane's legacy with a modern coloristic approach. Dave Liebman & John Stowell: Petite Fleur- The Music Of Sidney Bechet (CD: Origin)
Though a legendary figure from his monumental contributions to the clarinet and soprano saxophone's role in jazz, it was the compositions of Sidney Bechet that inspired master saxophonist David Liebman and guitarist John Stowell to dig deep into his catalogue to compile and explore this set of rarely heard gems. Each possessing singular voices themselves that have inspired generations of other performers, Liebman & Stowell have created a very personal and intimate duo project celebrating another giant's work, their conversations making for compelling listening. John Stowell & Dan Dean: Dream Painting (CD: Origin)John Stowell & Dan Dean: Dream Painting (CD: Origin)
Master guitarist and improvisor, John Stowell, has spent the last five decades touring the world, most often immersed in the universal jazz repertoire improvising with artists from wherever he's visiting. Through his recordings with "Scenes," and his quartet with SF Bay Area saxophonist Michael Zilber over the last 20 years, Stowell has had the chance to perform and focus on his own compositions more than ever before. It was through the mastering of those recordings that engineer, bassist, vocalist, producer Dan Dean discovered the nuances of Stowell's writing. The idea of collaboration came when Stowell heard Dean's recent classical voice recording, "Songs Without Words," where he layered multiple tracks of himself in what writer Raul da Gama called "...music-making of the highest order, which plumbs the depths of all of the emotions from wonderful joys to abject lamentations." Taking 10 of Stowell's compositions, Dean & Stowell layered voices, bass, and guitars over the course of a year, discovering unique avenues into the music with the end result feeling spontaneous, joyous and in the moment. "Dan Dean will redefine what you think is possible to achieve with the human voice. Prepare to be astonished." - Melinda Bargreen, Author & Music Critic (Proper Music)
