The 1975 coming-together of the mighty trio of John Abercrombie, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. Down Beat spoke of “daring and visionary spirit” in a five star review.

John Abercrombie: The First Quartet (CD: ECM, 3 CDs)John Abercrombie: The First Quartet (CD: ECM, 3 CDs)
This 3-CD set with recordings from 1978 to 1980, issued in ECM's acclaimed Old & New Masters series, returns some historically-important material to the catalogue, namely the albums 'Arcade', 'Abercrombie Quartet' and 'M'.

The quartet with Richie Beirach, George Mraz and Peter Donald - John Abercrombie's first touring band as a leader - was the group in which the guitarist defined some priorities, moving away from a jazz-rock period into a more spacious, impressionistic and original music. Abercrombie and pianist Beirach had a strong musical rapport as improvisers and wrote almost all of the band's book between them. George Mraz and Peter Donald provided imaginative support.

For this edition the recordings - made in Oslo and Ludwigsburg and produced by Manfred Eicher - were re-mastered from original analog sources. It's a first appearance on CD for these discs in most world territories ('Arcade' was briefly available on compact disc in Japan) and re-release of these titles has been much requested by followers of both Abercrombie and Beirach as well as ECM collectors. John Abercrombie: Night (CD: ECM Touchstones)
Night reconvenes the guitar/keyboards/drums trio that made Abercrombie’s classic Timeless, and adds Mike Brecker on tenor sax for extra emphasis at strategic moments on an album described by the Penguin Guide to Jazz as “surprisingly funky”. All compositions are by Abercrombie apart from “Ethereggae”, the esoteric half-time shuffle tune by Jan Hammer, which opens the proceedings. Recorded 1984. (ECM Records)

John Abercrombie, Marc Johnson, Peter Erskine (CD: ECM Touchstones)John Abercrombie, Marc Johnson, Peter Erskine (CD: ECM Touchstones)
Recorded live at Boston’s Nightstage club in 1988 this album found John Abercrombie both pushing sonic boundaries on guitar synthesizer and, on regular jazz guitar, deepening his relationship to the world of standards. In this trio he had exceptional improvisational support from bass and drums. Marc Johnson has said this band was the first that felt ”like home” to him after the final Bill Evans Trio. And Peter Erskine was rechannelling Weather Report ideas about soloing inside the structures in this more intimate context. (ECM Records)

John Abercrombie Quartet: Within A Song (CD: ECM)John Abercrombie Quartet: Within A Song (CD: ECM)
“Within A Song” celebrates the spirit of discovery that illuminated the jazz of the 1960s, as John Abercrombie declares his musical loyalties in a quartet album that pays tribute to a range of early influences including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins and Jim Hall. “This was the music that spoke to me. When I heard it, it was like finding a new home.” The group assembled especially for this production, recorded at New York’s Avatar Studios in September 2011 features tenorist Joe Lovano as the optimal partner for Abercrombie. Together they mine deep feelings from these modern jazz classics. (ECM Records)

John Abercrombie Quartet: 39 Steps (CD: ECM)
John Abercrombie’s revised quartet provides Marc Copland with his first appearance on ECM. Yet guitarist and pianist are old allies, with an association stretching back forty years. In the early 1970s both were members of Chico Hamilton’s quartet, and at the dawn of fusion both played with pioneering jazz-rock band Dreams. Since the late 1990s they’ve revived their partnership in diverse contexts and have toured in formations ranging from piano-guitar duo to trio with Kenny Wheeler to the cooperative group Contact with Dave Liebman and Billy Hart. For much of the last decade Abercrombie and Copland have also each had bassist Drew Gress as a regular member of their respective bands so “39 Steps” draws on a network of trusted relationships. Jazz ballads and lyricism predominate on this disc with six tunes from Abercrombie’s pen, two Copland tunes, one collective improvisation, and a creative deconstruction of the old standard “Melancholy Baby”. The album – produced by Manfred Eicher at New York’s Avatar Studio in April 2013 – is issued in time for a European tour by the quartet with concerts in France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland, Hungary and Macedonia.
