Thad Jones: The Magnificent (CD: Blue Note RVG)Thad Jones: The Magnificent (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Although Thad Jones was making a name for himself with Count Basie’s orchestra in 1956 when he made this Blue Note debut album, it is in the small-group context that his brilliant and original trumpet style really emerges. With fellow Detroiters Billy Mitchell and Barry Harris and ringers Percy Heath and Max Roach, he crafts inventive arrangements on mostly standards and plays brilliantly. Two bonus tracks have been added, including a beautiful duet with Kenny Burrell. (Blue Note Records)

Thad Jones & The Danish Radio Big Band: A Good Time Was Had By All (CD: Storyville)
This 72-minute (ten tunes) session was recorded live at the Montmartre jazz club in Copenhagen in 1978. Five of the ten tunes are written by Thad Jones; the rest include compositions by Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and the Gershwin Brothers.

The Danish Radio Big Band is comprised of the best Danish musicians plus two American stars - Idrees Sulieman on trumpet and Richard Boone on trombone - who were living in Copenhagen at the time. Thad Jones' compositions are a mix of power and eloquence; a unique style which made him world famous. (Storyville Records)

The Great Jazz Trio: Love For Sale (CD: Test Of Time)The Great Jazz Trio: Love For Sale (CD: Test Of Time)
Upon Hank Jones’ request, Buster Williams was asked to play acoustic bass on this particular session. (The Village Vanguard sessions where Ron Carter would reunite with Hank Jones and Tony Williams resulting in three live albums was still nine months away.)

With the delicate and natural Hank Jones and dynamic Tony Williams, the three tackle Cole Porter’s “Love For Sale”, Rodgers and Hart’s “Glad to Be Unhappy”, Don Redman’s “Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good To You” and “Secret Love” from the movie Calamity Jane made famous by Doris Day. Old favorites like “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Autumn Leaves” are included as well. In this re-release, a bonus track “Tenderly” has been added. (441 Records/ Test of Time Records)

The Great Jazz Trio: At The Village Vanguard (CD: Test Of Time)
In February 1977, three jazz giants came together for a week in the legendary Village Vanguard in New York City, creating the first in a series of live recordings that became the definitive work of the group known as The Great Jazz Trio. This session featured the original Great Jazz Trio dream team of Hank Jones, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, a unique combination of multi-generational musicians (at the time Hank was 58, Ron 39, Tony 31) of different experience & styles (Tony liked rock and led a fusion band called Lifetime).

From the 6-hours of great jazz recorded over 3-days, this album features jazz standards such as John Coltrane’s “Naima” and Charlie Parker’s “Moose the Mooche.” In addition, Ron Carter brought his own blues piece, “12+12” and Hank Jones found a rarely performed piece, “Favors,” written by Claus Orgermann to perform.

Ron Carter and Tony Williams have played together before as part of the Miles Davis Quintet in the ‘60s. The synergy of this trio was so great, Hank commented, “The two would pick up in an instant anything that I would do. It was like telepathy. That made it so thrilling and fun.” (441 Records/ Test of Time Records)

The Great Jazz Trio: Collaboration (CD: 441 Records)
On May 12 and 13, 2002, Elvin Jones recorded his last album with his older brother Hank, along with bassist Richard Davis, as The Great Jazz Trio at Avatar Studios in New York in what later became known as the Avatar sessions. The sessions resulted in three albums worth of material. The first album, Autumn Leaves, is available from 441 Records. The second, Someday My Prince Will Come, was released by Sony Columbia. Collaboration is the third album, which contains a couple alternate takes of songs from the first two albums and a bonus track, appropriately titled "Memories of You"; recorded on February 5, 2004. Elvin Jones, one of the most influential drummers in modern day music, passed away on May 18, 2004.

Hank wrote "Elvin, my brother" as liner notes for the album. Here's an excerpt:

"They say, 'The Good Die Young.' I Agree. Thad and Elvin did. They dedicated their lives to what they loved and believed in, even if that meant shortening their lives. As a family member, I sometimes wonder if we could have done less and stayed together as a family longer. On the other hand, I wholeheartedly respect Elvin's desire to live out his life (playing). Today's music world would not exist without him. The fact that he was a great drummer who influenced all those who came after him will forever remain in records and people's memories." The Great Jazz Trio: S'Wonderful (CD: 441 Records)The Great Jazz Trio: S'Wonderful (CD: 441 Records)
The Great Jazz Trio has a 30-year history of recording fabulous jazz performances and has built up a large following of admirers and fans. Over the years, The Great Jazz Trio featured some of the most unique and interesting combination of superb musicians with Hank Jones at the center. ‘S Wonderful is the latest incarnation of The Great Jazz Trio and this time Hank leads John Patitucci on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums, forming another dream team of jazz greats. At 85-years young (at the time of recording), Hank is still going strong and his energy is well matched with these younger, talented musicians. Many old favorite standards, including “’S Wonderful,” “Moanin’,” “Take Five,” “Night Train” and “Lover Come Back to Me” are all given a new twist. The album concludes with a very heartfelt rendition of “Greensleeves.” (441 Records/ Test of Time Records)

Hank Jones: The New York Rhythm Section (CD: Fresh Sound)
During the 50s Hank Jones earned a reputation for his prodigious activity in New York’s recording and broadcasting studios and in its night clubs. He was one-fourth of the basic rhythm section used on many studio jazz sessions. Barry Galbraith, Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson were the three other quarters. As we can hear from these tunes, they grooved like a smooth well-oiled machine, known as “The New York Rhythm Section”, through a fine selection of titles, showing just why they were in such demand in the Big Apple at the time of this recording.
