Sam Rivers: Fuchsia Swing Song (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)Sam Rivers: Fuchsia Swing Song (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
A saxophonist of striking originality, Sam Rivers was born in Oklahoma and exposed to music from an early age by his pianist mother and gospel singer father. Rivers moved to Boston to study at the Boston Conservatory and eventually met, and began performing with, the drummer Tony Williams who was barely a teenager at the time. Williams would open several doors for Rivers including recommending him for what would be a short stint in the Miles Davis Quintet, but also bringing Rivers to the attention of Blue Note’s Alfred Lion. Williams featured Rivers on his Blue Note debut Life Time in 1964, which led to Rivers’ appearance on organist Larry Young’s album Into Somethin’ before the saxophonist was offered his own recording deal with Blue Note. A month later Rivers was in Rudy Van Gelder’s studio recording his astonishing debut album Fuchsia Swing Song with an extraordinary quartet featuring Williams, bassist Ron Carter, and pianist Jaki Byard. Although a strong avant-garde undercurrent flowed through his music, Rivers kept a foot planted firmly in post-bop and the blues on this impressive set of his originals including the fleet-footed title track, the hard-charging “Downstairs Blues Upstairs,” and the stunning ballad “Beatrice” which remains Rivers’ most beloved composition.

This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. (Blue Note Records)

Sam Rivers: Dimensions & Extensions (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Sam River’s fourth album for Blue Note, recorded March 17, 1967, is one of his best. A cover and catalog number were prepared at the time, but for some reason this excellent date with Donald Byrd, Julian Priester, James Spaulding, Cecil McBee, and Steve Ellington remained in vaults for another ten years. The album is varied and challenging but always swinging in the hippest way. (Blue Note Records)

Sam Rivers: The Quest (CD: Red Records)Sam Rivers: The Quest (CD: Red Records)
During the mid-1970's multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers was at the forefront of the progressing jazz scene, running the famous jazz loft Studio Rivbea and recording large and small ensembles for domestic and foreign labels.

This trio had been playing together for quite a while, and it really shows with the group turning on a dime, presenting a studio version of their continuous live performances of the period. Each of the four performances recorded here feature one of Rivers instruments, leading off his swirling, nasal soprano saxophone on 'Expectation', before moving into the wide open and free flute led improvisation on 'Vision'. Sam Rivers: Contrasts (CD: ECM)
Contrasts has been unavailable for many years and is now released on CD for the first time, simultaneously with a 180g vinyl reissue. By the time of its recording in 1979, Sam Rivers and Dave Holland had been working together consistently for seven years (with Dave's legendary Conference of the Birds at the start of their collaboration), a powerhouse combination of multi-reeds and double bass.

Of the drummers who passed through the line-up, Thurman Barker was one of the most creative, rippling across drum kit and marimba. Young trombone innovator George Lewis had already worked with Holland and Barker in Anthony Braxton groups. For Contrasts everyone was fired up and ready to play.

Dave Holland always described Sam Rivers's groups as his finishing school. It was Sam - renowned as one of the major teachers in American jazz - who instructed him to play "all the music" - inside, outside, atonal, swing, blues, and all the hues of the jazz and chamber music traditions.
