Spontaneous Music Ensemble: Question And Answer 1966 (CD: Rhythm & Blues)
If there was one sound guaranteed to shock in British jazz during 1966 it was that of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, the free-improvising collective centred around drummer John Stevens which that year helped establish London’s Little Theatre Club as a stronghold of the ‘new wave’. Although the avant-garde were slow in gaining a toe-hold on British jazz tastes, every so often a grass roots jazz club would take a chance on the new style, such as the night in June 1966 when the SME alighted on Greenwich’s Prince Albert pub, eager to deliver their message to fresh ears. This CD set contains all the music played that night plus a 30 minute Q&A session, creating what must surely be one of the most important early documents of British ‘free’ jazz. CD2 also adds a studio-taped session from later that year. Both sets are previously unissued and both are essential listening for those interested in the course of modern jazz development within the UK. 12 page booklet with notes by Simon Spillett. (Rhythm & Blues Records)

Iskra 1903: South On The Northern (CD: Emanem, 2 CDs)
These two concerts recorded in south London pubs help fill an eight-year gap in the published recordings of improvising trio Iskra 1903, between the 1983 tour heard on CHAPTER TWO and the concert heard on FRANKFURT 1991 (both available on Emanem). They certainly show that there was no musical reason for such a gap – on the contrary, they make this listener want more. This surely must have been one of the most musically consistent bands ever, with this second version (in whch Philipp Wachsmann had replaced Derek Bailey) continuing the high standards set by the original edition. Paul Rutherford: In Backward Times (CD: Emanem)
Four very different concert settings featuring sensational performances by trombonist Paul Rutherford: two festival solos – one from 1979 with electronics and the other from 2004 without; a 1988 duo with Paul Rogers (double bass) a few months before their Rogues CD; and from 2007 a trio with Veryan Weston (piano) and Marcio Mattos (cello & electronics) – a very promising group, except that this turned out to be Rutherford’s last public appearance. All previously unissued. 76 minutes. (Discovery Records)

John Russell: With...(CD: Emanem)John Russell: With...(CD: Emanem)
John was off the scene for several months prior to this gig (Dec, 2014), mainly in hospital under observation for a serious heart condition, but he was determined to play this, his 60th birthday concert, at Cafe Oto in London. He has since had a heart bypass operation and is now well on the road to recovery.

"On approaching my sixtieth birthday and how to celebrate the fact I had made it that far I realised that I have been deeply fortunate in having had the opportunity to play with some great musicians over the years. It is this thing of ‘with’ - playing together in a spirit of shared generosity that is at the heart of free improvisation for me. It seemed natural then that the best way to celebrate would be to play a concert with some of these musicians." (John Russell)
