Bobby Watson, Vincent Herring & Gary Bartz: Bird At 100 (CD: Smoke Sessions)Bobby Watson, Vincent Herring & Gary Bartz: Bird At 100 (CD: Smoke Sessions)
Three of the most acclaimed voices of modern jazz Vincent Herring, Bobby Watson and Gary Bartz, an alto saxophone summit for the ages, celebrate the centennial of one of music’s most iconic figures, Charlie Parker. Along with a superb rhythm section, the three distinctive altoists pay tribute to Parker’s legacy in the most apt fashion for this ground-breaking pioneer: by carrying his innovations forward in their own utterly singular styles.

The soul-stirring Bird at 100 traces a direct lineage from Parker’s birthplace in Kansas City to the stage of Smoke Jazz & Supper Club, where these three influential acolytes look back from the vantage point of jazz in 2019, with a combination of reverence, respect and adventure. The program offers a buoyant mix of classic Parker tunes, familiar standards once recorded by Bird (and the generations since) and new compositions written in honor of the master. (Smoke Sessions)

Jimmy Cobb: This I Dig Of You (CD: Smoke Sessions)
NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Cobb’s “This I Dig of You” is a effortlessly swinging, new classic ready to take its place as one of the highlights in his indispensable 70-years of recordings.

Name a canonical jazz artist and chances are Jimmy Cobb has shared a stage or recording studio with them. Starting at the age of 21 all the way up to his new album “This I Dig of You,” Cobb has been not just “a jazz drummer” but “the jazz drummer”, a musician unmatched in technique and experience. And, 60 years ago, of course, Cobb played on the most indelible record in jazz history, “Kind Of Blue.” This new recording, with a band of Cobb’s longtime collaborators pianist Harold Mabern, guitarist Peter Bernstein, and bassist John Webber pays tribute to that seminal album by proving that it’s still not yet history. Alan Broadbent Trio: New York Notes (CD: Savant)Alan Broadbent Trio: New York Notes (CD: Savant)
Justly famous for his gorgeous compositions and arrangements for a long list of singers including Natalie Cole, Diana Krall and Paul McCartney, Alan Broadbent is also a pianist's pianist: possessed of fierce technique; exquisitely emotional, when the moment calls for it; and as hard-swinging as they come.

Throughout these performances - recorded for all intents and purposes "live" in his private recording studio, unrestricted by the confines of time - there is a remarkable polish and sense of order while maintaining the unmistakable sound of the classic piano trios, live and off-the-cuff. With his long-time associates Harvie S and Billy Mintz on hand it is little surprise that their almost telepathic communication gives the entire session an extremely wide emotional range encompassing, graceful delicacy, earthiness, soulfulness and just a little hint of the blues. Alan Broadbent Trio: Trio In Motion (CD: Savant)
The Alan Broadbent Trio's previous Savant release, 'New York Notes' (SCD2166), received rave reviews in the international press. The Guardian wrote, "The bubbling stream of notes is both unpredictable and inevitable, and following its twists and turns is a joy." Couleurs Jazz (France) proclaimed, "Behold! A precious gem of a jazz recording."

"Trio in Motion" finds Broadbent, Billy Mintz and Harvie S reunited in the pianist's New York apartment-studio recording music that is spontaneous, surprising, possessing a sly humour and emotionally involving. Each tune on the setlist is imbued with a warm intimacy and the refreshing, slightly piquant glow of intensity which warms both the listener's heart and mind. (Proper Music)

Eddie Henderson: Be Cool (CD: Smoke Sessions)Eddie Henderson: Be Cool (CD: Smoke Sessions)
"Be Cool" captures legendary trumpeter Eddie Henderson in peak form on perhaps his best recording yet. An expansive set of music by 77-year-old jazz trumpeter Dr. Eddie Henderson encompassing jazz, funk, boogaloo, blues, ballads, modal, tin pan alley and more. Surrounded by a stellar ensemble with pianist and NEA jazz master Kenny Barron, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, bassist Essiet Essiet, and drummer Mike Clark, Henderson delivers an album of transcendent performances. Donald Brown: Born To Be Blue (CD: Space Time)
Donald Brown’s ‘Born to Be Blue’, sees the pianist/composer team up with Kenny Garrett and Wallace Roney for the first time since they were all members of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in the 1980s. This occasion would be illustrious enough in itself but when these titans of today’s jazz scene are joined in the front line by a musician of the stature of Ravi Coltrane, then this recording becomes a special event indeed. Steve Turre: Spiritman (CD: Smoke Sessions)Steve Turre: Spiritman (CD: Smoke Sessions)
Spiritman is Steve Turre's debut recording for Smoke Sessions Records. It's something of a back-to-basics project for Turre who says, "It's the first record I've done in a long time that really focuses on my trombone playing." It also employs an ideal foil in saxophonist Bruce Williams whose timbre on soprano and alto is a perfect match for the trombone. Spiritman features several of Turre's new compositions including "Trayvon's Blues" a poignant, moving, jazz tone poem; "Bu" the record opener dedicated to his mentor Art Blakey; "Funky Thing" written for the Saturday Night Live Band; and "Nangadef" written for Senegalese percussionist Abdou Mboup and featuring Chembo Corniel on congas.

His spirited rendition of Miles Davis' "All Blues" begins with his own mystical "Spiritman" played on shells. It's a piece he performed to open the UN's International Jazz Day concert in Osaka, Japan in 2014. This "All Blues" introduction is also the first recording of a newly developed technique where Turre plays into a piano with the pedal down and the strings open. The shell's sound vibrates the open strings creating an ethereal, mystical, but acoustic sound. The rest of the band, Xavier Davis, Gerald Cannon, and Willie Jones III, know just what Turre wants and needs from a rhythm section and they help deliver this unforgettable music that also includes swinging standards and classic ballads. It's music designed to make you feel better. As Turre explains in his thoughts about this recording and music in general, "Music is about giving and about searching. Without spirit, music is just notes." It's a philosophy of life and music that continues to produce inspired results. (Smoke Sessions)

Steve Turre: Colors For The Masters (CD: Smoke Sessions)
Trombonist and composer Steve Turre shows off his full spectrum of sounds on his latest album, Colors for the Masters. The album s ten songs, evenly split between jazz standards and original tunes that carry the torch for the tradition, offer a dazzling array of hues played in tribute to and alongside some of the elders that have inspired Turre. The leader s own trombone virtuosity is only one color in a palette that also includes a variety of mutes and his wholly original conch shell artistry.

Colors for the Masters teams Turre with a rhythm section of legendary elders, each of whom shaped the trombonist s distinctive voice: pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jimmy Cobb. On four tunes the band is joined by saxophonist Javon Jackson, like Turre an alumni of Art Blakey s Jazz Messengers; and for the album s final tune, a stirring rendition of Jobim s 'Corcovado' on which Turre shows off his innovative shell playing, virtuoso percussionist Cyro Baptista also joins in. Together, they pay electrifying homage to other, departed luminaries like John Coltrane, J.J. Johnson, and Thelonious Monk. (Harmonia Mundi)

Steve Turre: The Very Thought Of You (CD: Smoke Sessions)Steve Turre: The Very Thought Of You (CD: Smoke Sessions)
On The Very Thought Of You, Turre shows off a less celebrated side of his brilliant artistry: his moving, heartfelt way with a ballad. Luxuriating in timeless melodies and swathed in lush strings, Turre makes his horn sing with delicate lyricism and subtle beauty. Of course, the irrepressible trombonist can't help but unleash his fiercely swinging side, peppering his ballad set with a few pulse-quickeners here and there.

The Very Thought Of You features a stellar quartet ideal for a session that calls for a light touch combined with the soul-stirring depth of feeling that Turre brings to everything that he plays. Turre is joined by pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Buster Williams, and drummer Willie Jones III, supplemented on four of the pieces by a string octet conducted by veteran arranger Marty Sheller. An outstanding pair of guests, legendary tenor saxophonist George Coleman and guitar great Russell Malone, both lend their breathtaking mastery to the music as well. (Proper Music)

Ralph Sutton: The Bedroom Sessions (CD: Soliloquy)
The Bedroom Sessions came about when Ralph Sutton was touring the UK In 1994. I hadn't met Ralph before but approached him after a concert to ask if he would accept a commission to make some private recordings on a Yamaha upright Disklavier I keep in the bedroom of my London flat. Perhaps he was intrigued, but to my delight he said yes and a few days later, accompanied by friends, Ralph was making music in my bedroom: a memorable afternoon of great piano and hilarious reminiscences. We did exactly the same when Ralph returned the following year. I doubt if my neighbours realized they were being serenaded by one of the world's greatest jazz pianists on those afternoons.

Many people who have listened to the recordings feel they deserve a wider audience. It was the question of finding a Yamaha grand Disklavier on which to play back the disks acoustically and make a recording from them, as though Ralph were playing live. I am extremely grateful to Simon Markson of Markson Pianos in London who had a Yamaha grand Disklavier in stock and allowed us free run of his showroom to make the recordings, and to Dave Bennett who used state-of-the-art portable equipment and his legendary expertise to produce the unique sound on this CD. The result is Ralph Sutton as never heard before. (Nick Campailla, Soliloquy Productions)

Ruby Braff: Three Classic Albums Plus (CD: AVID, 2 CDs)
AVID Jazz here presents three classic Ruby Braff albums plus, including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. "Hi Fi Salute To Bunny", "Easy Now", "You’re Getting To Be A Habit To Me" and the plus the previously unavailable "Jimmy Rushing And The Newport All-Stars" recorded in 1959.

Our latest release in the AVID Jazz series features a man who once said that he "attended the University of Louis Armstrong from which you never graduate". In fact our host, Ruby Braff was often irritated as a result of recording one of our featured albums, as he was forever after cited as a Berigan disciple, whereas our earlier quote firmly places him in the Armstrong camp! Ruby Braff was born in Boston in 1927 and did indeed learn his music by listening to Louis Arnstrong but along with many other great musicians like Lester Young, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby and Bessie Smith, with whom he had in common being "discovered" by Columbia’s John Hammond! On the Newport sessions liner notes Ruby is described as a "friendly, clean cut little guy with a great sense of humour and a powerful love for jazz"….."His is a traditional style trumpet played in a modern style……he has the tone, warmth and heart…even the majesty of an Armstrong". Settle back and listen while Ruby is joined by among others Roy Eldridge, Benny Morton, Pee Wee Russell, Mundell Lowe, Hank Jones, Vic Dickinson, Bob Wilbur and Jimmy Rushing and we think you may well agree! All three albums plus have been digitally re-mastered for probably the finest sound quality ever! (AVID Entertainment)

Monty Alexander: Here Comes The Sun (CD: MPS)
This 1971 recording signals the beginning of Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander's fruitful relationship with MPS, lasting over a decade and encompassing some dozen albums. Originally touted as heir to Oscar Peterson's crown, Alexander is famous for his virtuoso melding of jazz, the sounds of the Caribbean and blues. The classic Dave Brubeck Quartet's bassist Eugene Wright, calypso percussionist Montego Joe, and ace drummer Duffy Jackson round out the quartet.

Montevideo jumps off with percussive Latin two beat verve and a witty piano filled with quotes. The ballad Where is Love is a searching romantic serenade, and Monty transforms the Beatle's Here Comes The Sun into blues laced Latinesque with a taste of boogie. Monty takes the standard Love Walked In at a brisk pace as he demonstrates his considerable straight ahead jazz chops, bop quotes and all. Check out the tasty walking bass and drum solos. The luscious calypso Brown Skin Girl is followed by Monty's tender, wistful solo rendition of his The Dream Is Mine. The group stretches out on Miles Davis iconic So What, grounding the tune with a driving Latin rock beat. They say variety is the spice of life and Monty Alexander and co have seasoned this album to perfection. (Proper Music)

Monty Alexander: Calypso Blues- The Songs Of Nat King Cole (SACD: Chesky)
Legendary pianist Monty Alexander follows up his tribute to Tony Bennett with a homage to another classic jazz singer, Nat King Cole. Also recorded in New York City at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the same trio of Chicagoans Lorin Cohen on bass and drummer George Fludas, the veteran pianist seems in his element with this artist's repertoire, one that sharply defined his own sound and thinking about popular jazz. Though all of the tunes selected are not so closely linked to Cole's hit parade songbook, the way Alexander plays them with subtlety and depth does reflect what made Cole the king in the late '50s and early '60s. With the immaculate sound and performance by this fine trio hard to fault the effort, heart, and soul behind a concept album that should delight many jazz listeners. (Proper Music)

Bill Mays Trio: Live At Jazz Standard (CD: Palmetto)Bill Mays Trio: Live At Jazz Standard (CD: Palmetto)
In his long career, pianist and composer Bill Mays has always strived for a sense of freedom in his playing and has kept his ears open to many musical influences. On his 3rd release for Palmetto Records, Live At Jazz Standard, Mays taps into these influences and swings hard and free with his trio of six years - Martin Wind on bass and Matt Wilson on drums – producing perhaps the most adventurous CD he’s ever recorded.

Recorded at New York City’s Jazz Standard in December of 2004, Mays’ goal with the live CD was to try to capture the moments when the trio lets loose and creates great music on the fly. Mays and his trio played with few set arrangements, preferring to walk the proverbial tight rope without a net rather than confine themselves. Each player brought an arranger’s sensibility to the bandstand and nothing was the same from night to night. The resulting recording is a stunning collection of original and reworked standard tunes, some of which the trio had never performed before. (Palmetto Records)
