Alfred Lion called Andrew Hill his last great discovery and “Black Fire” was the pianist’s brilliant Blue Note debut. Added to the original LP are two alternate takes. (Blue Note Records)

Andrew Hill: Point Of Departure (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Alfred Lion considered Andrew Hill his last major discovery and rightly so. Hill's rich, rhythmic piano and utterly unique compositions stand alone. Point Of Departure is Hill's masterpiece with rich three-horn arrangements for Kenny Dorham, Eric Dolphy and Joe Henderson. Richard Davis and Tony Williams complete this high level ensemble. Three alternate takes have been added to the original LP. (Blue Note Records)

Andrew Hill: Compulsion (CD: Blue Note RVG)Andrew Hill: Compulsion (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Blue Note founder Alfred Lion considered Andrew Hill his last great discovery. “Compulsion” comes from that peak period (1963-65) when it seemed that Andrew Hill was recording a masterpiece every four months. With this album, the pianist/composer moved his music into denser, freer territory adding two percussionist to the quintet with great results. These extended performances, driven by Joe Chambers’ beautiful, sensitive drumming, offer great solos from Hill, Freddie Hubbard and John Gilmore. (Blue Note Records)

Andrew Hill: Hommage (CD: Test Of Time)Andrew Hill: Hommage (CD: Test Of Time)
Following in the footsteps of the release of PASSING SHIPS and DANCE OF DEATH on Blue Note, our release by Andrew Hill of HOMMAGE is one of the few solo piano efforts that he recorded. Captured by the master engineer, David Baker, at the Vanguard Studio in New York City on May 19 & 20 and July 31, 1975, six of the seven tracks are Hill's original compositions. Hill is known for his haunting & cerebral melodies that are rhythmically as well as harmonically complex. Because this recording was his first solo album in his then 20-year career, he was very deliberate in preparing for this session, from his playing right down to the selection of the piano. At his strong insistence, the track "Naked Spirit" was recorded in complete darkness to allow him to let his fingers be guided solely by his spirit. This is a unique and rare recording that illustrates why Andrew Hill deserves a place in jazz history. (The Woods)

Andrew Hill: Nefertiti (CD: Test Of Time)
This is the second release of Andrew Hill's work for Test of Time records after Hommage. Recorded on January 25, 1976 at The Vanguard Studios in New York, all six tracks featured in this album are Hill's originals. The fourth track called "Hattie" is named after his mother. Accompanying him are Richard Davis on bass and Roger Blank on drums. Richard Davis has recorded with Andrew Hill on over 9 of Hill's albums and Andrew considered Davis one of the best bassists playing today. Roger Blank is known for his work with Sun Ra, Frank Foster and Pharoah Sanders. This album was engineered and produced by the late great David Baker. (The Woods)

Andrew Hill: Blue Black (CD: Test Of Time)Andrew Hill: Blue Black (CD: Test Of Time)
This is the third release of Andrew Hill's work for Test of Time records after Hommage and Nefertiti. This album, Blue Black, was recorded on February 26, 1975 at CI Recording Studios in New York. All five tracks featured in this album are Hill's originals. Andrew Hill's rich soundscapes are taken to another level in the form of a quartet. Accompanying him are Chris White on bass, Leroy Williams on drums, and Jimmy Vass on soprano sax / alto sax / flute. These are the same players who performed on another Andrew Hill album recorded later in 1975 called Divine Revelations from Steeplechase Records. Enjoy the imaginative and challenging compositional style of Andrew Hill that has withstood the test of time. (The Woods)

Andrew Hill: Time Lines (CD: Blue Note)
With his first recording for the label since 1990, the innovative, acclaimed pianist/composer Andrew Hill begins his third era with Blue Note Records with his new quintet recording, TIME LINES. Hill first made a name for himself with a series of groundbreaking albums for the label between 1963–1970 that included Point of Departure, Black Fire & Judgment! Time Lines finds Hill, at 68 years old, forever pushing forward at the helm of a vastly creative quintet that gives gorgeous readings of eight new Hill compositions and reunites him with the trumpeter Charles Tolliver, who was featured on several of Hill’s early Blue Note sessions.
