Art Blakey: The Pime Source (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)Art Blakey: The Pime Source (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)
For 35 years Art Blakey was the pre-eminent leader of the hard-bop movement, a term frequently applied to an intense, hard driving style of jazz that combined elements of bebop, Rhythm & Blues and gospel music, that began to emerge in the early 1950s. Hard bop is usually regarded as being characterized by dark, weighty, earthy timbres, soulful inflections of pitch, blues-like melodic figures, and sometimes harmonies and chord progressions reminiscent of the sanctified church. Hard bop flourished during the late fifties and sixties, experienced a dip in popularity, like most jazz forms, during the 1970s and enjoyed an unprecedented revival from the mid-1980s onwards.

During 35 years Art Blakey led his Jazz Messengers, an ensemble that ranked among the most rewarding in jazz. The Jazz Messengers served as a springboard for talented young musicians who were prepared to push themselves beyond the limit, or burn-out in the process. As a leader, Art Blakey always insisted on complete musicianship and the understanding that without risk jazz is dead. Blakey had no time for timidity or playing it safe, his drumming encouraged daring and brilliance. He consistently stood by his musical principles. In doing so the Jazz Messengers have shaped the style of most small group blowing over four decades. Blakey’s role as a teacher, finder and developer of young talent is unsurpassed in jazz. This 44 track 4CD set presents four early Jazz Messengers line-ups in live settings at Birdland and Cafe Bohemia and also in Columbia studios. (Proper Records)

Art Blakey: Hard Bop (CD: Proper, 2 CDs)Art Blakey: Hard Bop (CD: Proper, 2 CDs)
Art Blakey, considered by many to be the consummate bop drummer, cut his teeth in the musical melting pot that was the Billy Eckstine band of the 1940s. This band included such luminaries over the years as Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. When it disbanded in 1947, Blakey set about organising his own big band, known initially as the 17 Messengers, which eventually morphed into the form we know today and one of the longest-lived names of any jazz group - The Jazz Messengers. The tracks on this 2CD overview of Blakey's early career run from the first Messengers sessions (featuring Kenny Dorham and Tiny Grimes), through to the Blue Note recordings of the early '50s that coalesced the style that was to become known as Hard Bop and indeed gave the Blue Note label its distinctive sound and identity. Included are cuts from the classic "Live At Birdland" sessions and just some of the featured musicians on this set include Clifford Brown, Horace Silver, Tadd Dameron, Howard McGhee, Tiny Grimes and Lou Donaldson. An essential purchase. (Proper Records)

Art Blakey: Holiday For Skins (CD: Blue Note Connoisseur)
Art Blakey combined three trap drummers (Art Taylor, Philly Joe Jones and himself) with seven percussionists including Sabu and Ray Barretto to create a formidable percussion ensemble on this 1958 session which produced two albums, both of which are included on this CD. Donald Byrd and Ray Bryant are the jazz soloists. The music shifts seamlessly from jazz to Latin to African with all ten drummers moving together in beautiful precision. (Blue Note Records)

Art Blakey's most successful album gave us Bobby Timmons's "Moanin'" and Benny Golson's "Along Came Betty" and "Blues March," tunes so powerful that Blakey played them almost every night for the next 30 years. This beautifully performed and recorded session made the Jazz Messengers a jazz institution and put Golson, Timmons and Morgan to the forefront of jazz. (Blue Note Records)

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: At The Cafe Bohemia, Vol.1 (CD: Blue Note RVG)
"Cooking session" for Blue Note, at Greenwich Village club (New York), with drummer Art Blakey's early version of his co-operative Jazz Messengers. On a 2-vol. recording from 1955, an impressive hard bop personnel, with trumpet Kenny Dorham, new sax star Hank Mobley, pianist Horace Silver and bassist Doug Watkins---all sticked along by Blakey's mixed-rhythm energy. Content includes a relaxed, rocking "Soft Winds" and "Like Someone in Love," expressive ballads ("Alone Together," "Yesterdays," "I Waited for You"), and several Dorham and Mobley originals which offer straight-ahead blowing. 1950s Blue Note sessions are central to jazz modernism---uncomplicated groove in the main stem. As Blakey invites here, take off your shoes and have a ball. (Andrew Clark, Editor, Riffs & Choruses: A New Jazz Anthology. Continuum Publishing.)

The original Jazz Messengers (Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Doug Watkins and Blakey) created a soulful, intelligent approach to modern jazz that came to be called hard bop. Each volume of these great live sessions includes three bonus tracks added to the historic albums. (Blue Note)

This album by one of the best editions of the Jazz Messengers with Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt was recorded at the same August 1960 sessions that produced “A Night In Tunisia”. The title tune was a regular feature in the band’s live sets, but the real gems here are Lee Morgan’s “Johnny Blue” and three obscure, but marvelous Wayne Shorter tunes. An alternate take of “Sleeping Dancer Dance On” has been added to the original album. (Blue Note Records)

"When you get away from swinging," Art Blakey wrote in the notes to this album, recorded in 1964, "you may be in danger of losing the essence of jazz." Blakey was never in danger of losing that essence, and both the master drummer and his Jazz Messengers swing from start to finish here. Featuring Lee Morgan on trumpet, and John Gilmore, best known for his work with Sun Ra, on tenor saxophone. (Verve Music Group)
