Benny Goodman: Small Bands Collection 1935-45 (CD: Acrobat, 3 CDs)Benny Goodman: Small Bands Collection 1935-45 (CD: Acrobat, 3 CDs)
Clarinettist and bandleader Benny Goodman was one of the giants of the swing era, with his orchestra pioneering the genre in the late ‘30s and riding the big band wave through into the post-ear era. However, he also greatly enjoyed playing in more flexible small jazz groups, where his superb technique had more of a chance to shine.

This great-value 70-track set brings together a significant proportion of the titles he recorded in Trio, Quartet, Quintet, Sextet and Septet environments the heyday of his swing orchestra, often recording with artists drawn from the current incarnation of his bands. It comprises recordings on the Victor, Columbia and Okeh labels, and not surprisingly features a host of significant jazz personalities, including Teddy Wilson, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, Charlie Christian, Cootie Williams, Count Basie, Red Norvo, Slam Stewart, John Kirby, Fletcher Henderson, Johnny Guarnieri, Georgie Auld and many more. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable anthology of small band jazz that defies being categorised, ranging across both well-known standards and original compositions, and allows us to hear Benny and his colleagues swinging and improvising in some star-studded line-ups. Benny Goodman: Hits Collection Vol.1 1931-38 (CD: Acrobat, 4 CDs)
Benny Goodman was a clarinettist and band leader, equally at home with small bands or fronting a large orchestra, whose music covered the spectrum of jazz and popular music in the four decades spanning World War Two, and who earned the nickname of “The King Of Swing” as a pioneer of that style of jazz. He was so popular that he racked up well over 150 hits in the quarter century or so from 1930 to the early 1950s. Indeed, so successful was his catalogue, this collection has been extended across two volumes: this 94-track 4CD covers the years from 1931-38,

Benny Goodman & His Orchestra: The Essential BG (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)
This box set collects the greatest hits and artistic achievements by Benny Goodman And His Orchestra, the man mainly responsible for making jazz the popular music of the '30s and '40s. Like Elvis 20 years later Goodman adapted black music for white tastes, toning it down and cleaning it up, but unlike Presley he was willing to take risks with his celebrity. He was born into a large an impoverished family in 1909 and was encouraged to learn an instrument by his father, he chose the clarinet. This paid off as the young Goodman was to become musically obsessed at an early age and by the time he was in his teens he was earning more money than many of his elders. Although not a great jazzman in the way Armstrong or Ellington was, he was a major figure in jazz and played an important role in the history of 20th century popular music. (Proper Records)
