 | Benny Goodman & His Orchestra: The Essential BG (CD: Proper, 4 CDs) This box set collects the greatest hits and artistic achievements by Benny Goodman And His Orchestra, the man mainly responsible for making jazz the popular music of the '30s and '40s. Like Elvis 20 years later Goodman adapted black music for white tastes, toning it down and cleaning it up, but unlike Presley he was willing to take risks with his celebrity. He was born into a large an impoverished family in 1909 and was encouraged to learn an instrument by his father, he chose the clarinet. This paid off as the young Goodman was to become musically obsessed at an early age and by the time he was in his teens he was earning more money than many of his elders. Although not a great jazzman in the way Armstrong or Ellington was, he was a major figure in jazz and played an important role in the history of 20th century popular music. (Proper Records)

Benny Goodman & His Orchestra: Ridin' High (CD: Proper) Benny Goodman, known in his heyday as The King Of Swing, was the quintessential bandleader of the swing era. With the arranging talents of the likes of Fletcher Henderson, combined with the best soloists in the business, his band tore the roof off anywhere it played - from the ballrooms right up to Carniege Hall. This album presents all the hits by the first incarnation of Goodman's band, including drummer Gene Krupa's feature "Sing Sing Sing". (Proper Records)

 | Benny Goodman: Complete Legendary 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert (CD: Definitive, 2 CDs) Legendary Carnegie Hall jazz concert, featuring clarinet-leader Benny Goodman's band and including his mixed-race quartet/ trio (Teddy Wilson, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa), a host of gifted sidemen (including Harry James and Jess Stacy), and add-on jam session which includes Count Basie, Lester Young and Buck Clayton. Tributes to the music of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke and Duke Ellington. This historic occasion brought jazz to concert-hall performance---the audience danced in Carnegie's hallowed aisles---and served as timely tribute to white, big-band, orchestrated "swing" music, which dominated jazz in 1930s-1940s. A wonderfully varied live performance, documenting an entire era---"Twenty Years of Jazz." Recommended for basic collection. (Andrew Clark, Editor, Riffs & Choruses: A New Jazz Anthology.
