 | Bill Evans: New Jazz Conceptions (CD: Riverside- US Import) In 1956, Bill Evans was virtually unknown (it would be more than a year before he first gained notice as part of the celebrated Miles Davis Sextet). His initial album attracted little attention back then, but listening with hindsight it is easy to hear in these highly individual trio and solo treatments a clear prophecy of the rich inventiveness that so deeply influenced Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, and an entire generation of jazz pianists. | Bill Evans: Everybody Digs- Complete 1958/59 Winter Trio Sessions (CD: American Jazz Classics) Everybody Digs Bill Evans was the pianists second studio album recorded under his own name (it was made more than two years after his debut LP, titled New Jazz Conceptions). Always a very insecure man, Evans was very cautious about presenting a work of his own. In fact, he was nearly 27-years old when he made his first LP as a leader in September 1956. By this point he already had many studio recordings under his belt, and a lot of playing experience.Like his first album, Everybody Digs showcases Evans in a trio format, but also contains solo piano tracks. The album cover included quotes by some of the most important jazz players from the period praising Bills playing.By then he was already a member of Miles Davis sextet with John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley, and the following year he would participate on one of the mosticonic works of jazz history: Kind of Blue. We have also included the complete trio studio session that immediately follows this album in the pianists discography, recorded a couple of months before the initial Kind of Blue session. | Bill Evans: Waltz For Debby (CD: Riverside- US Import) Evans' finest and most lucid trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian was cruelly cut short by the bassist's death in an automobile accident just ten days after this live set was taped. Capturing them at the height of their powers, 'Waltz' and the 'Vanguard' discs originate from the same (beautifully recorded) concerts in June 1961 and showcase the pianist's gentle, almost classical fingers (the opening of the title tune sounds almost like a John Ireland prelude) and LaFaro's electrifying elastic bass lines. Evans subsequently went on to form various groups, few with the empathy or expression of this one. A BEBOP SHOP MILESTONE- An essential recording for your jazz CD shelf

 | Bill Evans Trio: Time Remembered (CD: Milestone- US Import) Evans (1929-1980) remains the most influential improvising pianist of the past 40 years, for his exquisite sound, dreamlike chord voicings, deep song balladry, and singular conception of rhythmic displacement. This set contains five solo piano pieces, four of which are from the April 1962 date that marked Evans's return to the studio following the sudden death in July 1961 of the brilliant 25-year-old bassist Scott LaFaro, the pianist's closest collaborator. The remainder of the program was done in May 1963, live at the fondly remembered Hollywood club Shelly's Manne-Hole, and featured his highly underrated trio including bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker. With cohesive, if typically understated, support, Evans, as was his wont, brings song-form improvisation to the pinnacle of communication. (Fantasy, Inc.)

Bill Evans: Alone (CD: Verve) In his original notes for this 1968 solo recital, Bill Evans wrote of achieving a "sense of oneness while playing alone." Alone was the first album to capture that "sense of oneness" in all its haunting beauty -- the first to consist of nothing but Evan's piano, unaccompanied by other musicians or even by overdubs. Entirely remastered from the original four-track session reels for the first time, this reissue contains seven bonus tracks from the Alone sessions, six of them recently discovered and never previously released. Bill Evans Trio: Live In Ottawa 1974 (CD: Gambit) A Canadian concert by the Bill Evans Trio appearing here on CD for the first time ever, recorded live in Ottawa in 1974 and featuring with Evans, Eddie Gomez on bass & Marty Morell, drums. Total time: 68 min. with splendid sound quality and new and careful 20-bit remastering. This Canadian concert was performed shortly before Morells departure, and therefore, boasted a well-rehearsed unit. Before new drummer Eliot Zigmunds arrival, Evans would make a duo album with Eddie Gomez entitled Intuition. The concert issued here was one of two performances recorded during that engagement, although not a single tune was played twice. The other concert including the tunes One for Helen, The Two Lonely People, etc, has been issued on CD under the title of Blue in Green on Milestone, Charley & Ace. But this concert, taken from a radio broadcast, is completely different - has been long unavailable and appears here on CD for the first time ever. As a bonus to this rare concert, we have added 4 tracks from the soundtrack for a TV show featuring the same Bill Evans trio, recorded in New York on September 17, 1972. (Discovery Records)
