A vocal/tenor sax team who perfectly complemented each other, Billie Holiday and Lester Young recorded a series of superb small-group sessions for the Okeh label between 1937 and 1941, most of them under the musical direction of the pianist Teddy Wilson. This 3CD set compiles all of them, including alternate takes, as well as all of their other studio dates together, in 1949 and 1957. (Discovery Records)

Billie Holiday: The Complete Decca Recordings (CD: Essential Jazz Classics, 2 CDs)
Billie Holiday is heard at her absolute best on this set, which comprises her complete Decca recordings, made at her musical zenith between 1944 and 1950. During her time with the label, Lady Day was accompanied by strings and studio orchestras for the first time in her career. Her voice was at its strongest in those years, and among the high points here are her original versions of songs which Billie would keep in her repertoire, such as “Lover Man” (Holiday’s biggest selling record), “Don’t Explain,” and “Good Morning Heartache”. This collection also contains two studio duets with Louis Armstrong. Three previously unissued alternate takes are presented here for the first time ever. (Discovery Records)

Billie Holiday: Four Classic Albums Plus (CD: AVID, 2 CDs)
AVID Jazz here presents four classic Billie Holiday albums plus, including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. "Body and Soul", "Billie Holiday At Jazz At The Philaharmonic", "Music For Torching" and "Velvet Mood", five tracks from "Ella Fitzgeralnd & Billie Holiday at Newport" plus one track from the album "The Sound Of Jazz" featuring three of the greatest sax players in jazz history, old flame Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster!

What can we say about Billie Holiday that has not already been said before? Coming to prominence in the 1930’s where she played with the Teddy Wilson band in 1935, went solo in 1936, joined Count Basie in 1937 and finally Artie Shaw in 1938 before finally stepping out on her own again as one of the greatest jazz singers who ever lived! There is something about her voice that sets "Lady Day" apart from any of her contempories, or indeed anyone who tried to follow in her giant footsteps. Perhaps it was her tough upbringing, playing in the small bars of Harlem (including a spell in a brothel), that gave her voice that special anguish, pain and sadness, a yearning for something or someone better in her life. Our four selections, plus, cover a ten year period in the career of Billie Holiday, from 1945 where she is captured live at the Philharmonic Hall, through to 1957 where she is again captured live at the Newport festival. We stop off in 1955 to listen to two studio albums "Music For Torching" and " Velvet Mood" and fast forward to 1957 for "Body and Soul" before taking our seats at Newport to listen to a 42 year old veteran carrying the weight of a troubled life in every word she sings. To these ears, Billie Holiday was to jazz singing as Marvin Gaye was to soul singing. There are many great jazz and soul singers in the world but no one sounded quite like these two. They carried the pain and anguish, sorrow and fear of their lives in the heartbreaking way they sang their songs. No one else comes close!

All four albums plus have been digitally re-mastered for probably the finest sound quality ever! (AVID Entertainment)

Billie Holiday: Body And Soul (CD: Verve)
Come the latter half of the 1950s, the liquor and narcotics had finally begun to catch up with 'Lady Day'. However, though her later records inevitably chart the demise of a tortured soul in varying states of decay, Norman Granz's productions continued to capture what resplendence was still left in Holiday, a woman capable of telling a story like no other in jazz- from experience.

The Verve records are revealing documents of her latter years and though the voice sounds ravaged by her own excesses, 'Body and Soul' finds her in remarkably good shape in January 1957. The title cut, 'Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You' and her Gershwin standards receive definitive readings, notably 'Embraceable You', and 'They Can't Take That Away From Me', where her weary, masterful delivery is perfectly pointed up by Ben Webster's tersely passionate solos. This superb-sounding Master edition features three additional tracks: a couple of false starts- with studio chatter- and an alternate take of 'Comes Love'.

Billie Holiday: Lady In Satin (CD: Columbia)
As magical as it is disturbingly harrowing, Lady In Satin captures the voice of a lady audibly ravaged by a lifetime of hardship, drug and alcohol abuse. This, her penultimate studio recording with Ray Ellis' orchestra in 1958, exposes her failing voice but gloriously reinforces every sentiment she utters. And every one of them she lived, breathed and, ultimately, took to the grave not long afterwards. Fascinating and essential listening. (Includes 4 previously unreleased bonus tracks, new liner notes by arranger Ray Ellis & stunning rare photos).

Billie Holiday: The Last Albums (CD: Essential Jazz Classics, 2 CDs)Billie Holiday: The Last Albums (CD: Essential Jazz Classics, 2 CDs)
“Lady in Satin”, recorded with the Ray Ellis Orchestra in 1958, became a big hit. Although her voice wasn’t in top form at this point, the poignancy with which Billie Holiday performed the material produced a true classic. The following year they tried to repeat the formula when Holiday’s health had deteriorated further and she died before the album was released, hence the title “Last Recording”. Both LPs are presented here in their entireties and various concert broadcast recordings from the singer’s last two years have been added as a bonus. (Discovery Records)
