Come the latter half of the 1950s, the liquor and narcotics had finally begun to catch up with 'Lady Day'. However, though her later records inevitably chart the demise of a tortured soul in varying states of decay, Norman Granz's productions continued to capture what resplendence was still left in Holiday, a woman capable of telling a story like no other in jazz- from experience. The Verve records are revealing documents of her latter years and though the voice sounds ravaged by her own excesses, 'Body and Soul' finds her in remarkably good shape in January 1957. The title cut, 'Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You' and her Gershwin standards receive definitive readings, notably 'Embraceable You', and 'They Can't Take That Away From Me', where her weary, masterful delivery is perfectly pointed up by Ben Webster's tersely passionate solos. This superb-sounding Master edition features three additional tracks: a couple of false starts- with studio chatter- and an alternate take of 'Comes Love'.
