Blossom Dearie: The Early Years Collection 1948-60 (CD: Acrobat, 4CDs)Blossom Dearie: The Early Years Collection 1948-60 (CD: Acrobat, 4CDs)
Blossom Dearie was a stylish jazz pianist and singer with a style and technique which skilfully interwove her piano and “light and girlish” vocal as she accompanied herself. Her approach to piano was distinctive, using chord voicings which inspired the likes of Bill Evans who named her as one of his models of piano playing, while her voice was also highly personal, with a light and airy flavour. Throughout her career, Dearie was thought of as a “musician’s musician”. She learned piano from the age of five, initially focusing on classical music, before moving to jazz. Born in 1924, she spent some of her early career in France during the early ‘50s, which helped shape her style, before returning to the US in 1957.

This 96-track collection features early recordings with Dave Lambert, Stan Getz & Kai Winding and King Pleasure, plus recordings in France with Les Blue Stars, who became The Swingle Singers. Also included here is her album Jazz Sweet for Barclay in France, followed by the records she made with Verve between 1956 and 1962: Blossom Dearie, Give Him The Ooh-La-La, Once Upon A Summertime, Sings Comden And Green, My Gentleman Friend and Soubrette - Blossom Dearie Sings Broadway Hit Songs. Among the top musicians of the day who appear are: Ray Brown, Jo Jones, Herb Ellis, Mundell Lowe, Ed Thigpen, Cy Coleman Kenny Burrell, Bobby Jaspar, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke. Dearie passed away, from natural causes in her sleep, in 2009. (Trapeze Music)

Blossom Dearie: Four Classic Albums Plus (CD: Avid, 2 CDs)Blossom Dearie: Four Classic Albums Plus (CD: Avid, 2 CDs)
AVID Jazz presents four classic Blossom Dearie albums on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. Blossom Dearie, Blossom Dearie Plays For Dancing, Give Him The Ooh La La and Once Upon A Summertime, plus for good measure and extra value we have also included 6 tracks from her vocal album Blue Stars Of France and her one track recorded with King Pleasure!

So let’s get one thing out of the way first of all, yes her real name was Blossom Dearie, well actually it was Marguerite Blossom Dearie but she wisely dropped the first name to give herself a fighting chance of being remembered in the highly competitive music business. It seemed to have worked as Blossom’s baby doll voice graced the world’s stages for decades having become a solo singer after spells with Woody Herman and Alvino Rey in the mid 1940’s. Our four classic album selections find Miss Dearie in the company of such great musicians as Roy Brown, Ed Thigpen, Mundell Lowe, Herb Ellis and Jo Jones.

All four albums have been digitally re-mastered for probably the finest sound quality ever! (AVID Entertainment)

Blossom Dearie: Sings Comden and Green (CD: Verve)Blossom Dearie: Sings Comden and Green (CD: Verve)
Betty Comden and Adolph Green are best known as the lyricists behind the musical 'Singing In The Rain' and numerous Broadway shows including 'On The Town'. Leonard Bernstein's musical tale of three sailors' 24-hour stay in New York- plus 'It's Love' from 'Wonderful Town'- takes centre stage on one of Dearie's finest, taped in 1959. Her intimate vocals delicately illuminated by her own piano accompaniments, imbue 'Lucky To Be Me' and 'Some Other Time' with a reflectively coy romanticism that's close to perfection. The Jule Styne numbers (and one from Andre Previn) are given equally tender treatments, notably on 'How Will He Know', and the album takes on a playful, funkier edge when Kenny Burrell joins Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen in the second half of the set, Dearie almost mirthfully discovering 'The Party's Over' and returning to Manhattan for a gently Latinised 'Lonely Town'.

The vocalist and pianist Blossom Dearie has been delighting audiences with her deceptively quiet approach for more than half a century. She has seldom sounded better than she does on these characteristically intimate tracks, recorded in 1959. (Verve Music Group)
