Cecil Taylor with John Coltrane: Hard Driving Jazz (CD: Gambit)Cecil Taylor with John Coltrane: Hard Driving Jazz (CD: Gambit)
This mid-price Gambit CD collates 3 important Cecil Taylor 1950’s sessions. The first comprising 4 dynamic tracks cut in New York in 1958 featuring the great John Coltrane, with Kenny Dorham, Chuck Israels & Louis Hayes. The second session, recorded in Boston in 1956 finds Taylor on two tracks (one of over 11 minutes) with soprano sax master Steve Lacy - plus Buell Neidlinger on bass and Dennis Charles, drums. These are Lacy’s first ‘modern’ jazz recordings having previously worked as a ‘Dixieland’ player. There are a further 4 fine tracks with Taylor and the same rhythm section, but without Lacy. Cecil Taylor Trio & Quartet featuring Steve Lacy: Jazz Advance (CD: Fresh Sound)
Since his first recordings, pianist Cecil Taylor’s astonishing performances were marked by such freedom of improvisation that careful, studied listening wasrequired. Cecil, whose bursts of staccato phrases and subtle use of motifs always implied a melody line, improvised in a manner that (still) defies description. He was constantly foraging in search of the dynamically fresh in his solos. Steve Lacy - who made a stylistic leap in joining Taylor’s free jazz quartet, is heard here also blowing a new sound through the horn. His soprano had the virility of a tenor and the manoeuvrability of an alto.

These performances, which also feature Buell Neidlinger (bass) and Dennis Charles(drums), make for rewarding listening because of the constant probing and daring of the participants. (Discovery Records)

Cecil Taylor: Looking Ahead (CD: Contemporary/ Fantasy- US Import)
In June of 1958, Cecil Taylor was well into his transition from eccentric square peg in mainstream jazz to visionary of post-bop free music. That was the summer that he was to cause shock, consternation, and intrigued curiosity among various segments of the audience of the Newport Jazz Festival. He was beginning to be acknowledged as a developer of something new in jazz and, like all innovators, was being received enthusiastically by a few, warily by some, and not at all by most musicians, listeners, and critics. These pieces from his late early period are compact, accessible, and rhythmic in the sense of conventional swing. They owe a good deal to Taylor’s love of Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. But the guideposts to a freer jazz of the future are clearly heard. (Fantasy, Inc.)
