Cecil Taylor with John Coltrane: Hard Driving Jazz (CD: Gambit)Cecil Taylor with John Coltrane: Hard Driving Jazz (CD: Gambit)
This mid-price Gambit CD collates 3 important Cecil Taylor 1950’s sessions. The first comprising 4 dynamic tracks cut in New York in 1958 featuring the great John Coltrane, with Kenny Dorham, Chuck Israels & Louis Hayes. The second session, recorded in Boston in 1956 finds Taylor on two tracks (one of over 11 minutes) with soprano sax master Steve Lacy - plus Buell Neidlinger on bass and Dennis Charles, drums. These are Lacy’s first ‘modern’ jazz recordings having previously worked as a ‘Dixieland’ player. There are a further 4 fine tracks with Taylor and the same rhythm section, but without Lacy. Cecil Taylor Trio & Quartet featuring Steve Lacy: Jazz Advance (CD: Fresh Sound)
Since his first recordings, pianist Cecil Taylor’s astonishing performances were marked by such freedom of improvisation that careful, studied listening wasrequired. Cecil, whose bursts of staccato phrases and subtle use of motifs always implied a melody line, improvised in a manner that (still) defies description. He was constantly foraging in search of the dynamically fresh in his solos. Steve Lacy - who made a stylistic leap in joining Taylor’s free jazz quartet, is heard here also blowing a new sound through the horn. His soprano had the virility of a tenor and the manoeuvrability of an alto.

These performances, which also feature Buell Neidlinger (bass) and Dennis Charles(drums), make for rewarding listening because of the constant probing and daring of the participants. (Discovery Records)

Cecil Taylor: Looking Ahead (CD: Contemporary/ Fantasy- US Import)Cecil Taylor: Looking Ahead (CD: Contemporary/ Fantasy- US Import)
In June of 1958, Cecil Taylor was well into his transition from eccentric square peg in mainstream jazz to visionary of post-bop free music. That was the summer that he was to cause shock, consternation, and intrigued curiosity among various segments of the audience of the Newport Jazz Festival. He was beginning to be acknowledged as a developer of something new in jazz and, like all innovators, was being received enthusiastically by a few, warily by some, and not at all by most musicians, listeners, and critics. These pieces from his late early period are compact, accessible, and rhythmic in the sense of conventional swing. They owe a good deal to Taylor’s love of Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. But the guideposts to a freer jazz of the future are clearly heard. (Fantasy, Inc.)

Cecil Taylor: Conquistador! (CD: Blue Note RVG- US Import)
For the second of Cecil Taylor's two Blue Note albums (following Unit Structures), the innovative pianist utilized a sextet comprised of trumpeter Bill Dixon, altoist Jimmy Lyons, both Henry Grimes and Alan Silva on basses and drummer Andrew Cyrille. During the two lengthy pieces, Lyons' passionate solos contrast with Dixon's quieter ruminations while the music in general is unremittingly intense. Both of the Taylor Blue Notes are quite historic and near-classics but, despite this important documentation, Cecil Taylor (other than a pair of Paris concerts) would not appear on records again until 1973. Cecil Taylor: Garden 1st Set (CD: hatOLOGY)
This new reissue of Garden presents the music for the first time in the original concert sequence. The previous CD and LP releases re-sequenced the music in order to fit on LP side lengths. Garden was recorded live on 16th November, 1981, at Grosser Saal Volkshaus Basel, Switzerland.

'Nature neither ages nor stays the same, it recycles and thus re-identifies itself perpetually, and we continually experience it from a new perspective. Likewise with Art; therefore it s impossible not to hear the music of Cecil Taylor akin to a force of Nature with different ears 34 years on. Similarities may be recognized, a few details confirmed, but the response must embrace meaningful change, or the music, and the recipient, are not alive, cavorting in the same time/space sensibility. The garden that is re-invigorated and re-defined does not die.

Taylor s choice of the garden to represent this 1981 performance has its roots in his longstanding belief that creativity is the ever-present condition of Nature (in our case, Life), and that his music in particular grew (and continues to grow) out of a personal engagement with the blues a music, metaphorically, of the soil, grounded in the legacy of African Americans and specifically an awareness of the innovative transformational powers of Duke Ellington. As he explained in the 1960s to A.B. Spellman (Black Music: Four Lives, Schocken Books), 'He could play a blues, but man, the way the thing was laid out it transcended the single idea of the blues. I m still trying to come to grips with that, you know.' Art Lange (Harmonia Mundi)
